I have to say that this video is pretty spot on. I went through the same journey about 7 years ago and I would have to see that I agree with everything said here. Good video and for anyone thinking about this...go for it....this is pretty darn accurate!

An idea for redesigns for your portfolio. Instead of redesigning an established site thats already done pretty well. Look around at the sites for the businesses in your local area. I promise you there will be a ton that have terrible designs. You can then do a full redesign of their site, and create a case study where you showcase a comparison of the old design to your new one. Due to the halo effect, even if your design isnt incredible as long as its at least a decent amount better than the old one itll look more impressive sitting next to the old bad design. Not only do you now have a project for your portfolio you can then potentially pitch this redesign to the business. If they like it enough maybe theyll pay you for it. You can then list that as work experience on your resume.

Thanks for this. I’m in my 30’s looking to change my career. I’ve been studying on my own and taking the google UX course. It’s discouraging to see so many people giving you reasons to stay away from UX but so refreshing to see people in similar situations reach their goal. I keep telling myself to push through, the hiring market may get better, and I’ll be glad that I was prepared when it does. I’m considering a bootcamp after the google course but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. Eager to see more videos from you.

Really happy to hear this! In my experience there are always plenty of reasons not to try something, but it’s about figuring out what you want and giving yourself reasons TO try something then going after it regardless of what people say 👊

I remember someone discussing how they started in graphic design years ago and there was so much demand that were able to climb quickly in UX. Things have obviously changed. Over the last few years there are incredibly few entry level positions available while there are still a glut of UXers with experience that were laid off. I’m not saying don’t go for it, but understand the whole landscape has changed for the time being. You are dealing with a exponentially tougher hill to climb with a greater probability of risk until things pick back up and the layoffs shake out. Could be in a couple months or it could take years.

Good comment - it's definitely shifted away from "anyone can do this" and there is certainly less appetite from companies to bring on lots of junior UXers. Probably a combination of the current job market, and companies realising that senior UX experience is essential.

@@leanderangst Do you think it's possible for a person from a 3rd world country to get into UX? I mean is it possible to work for a foreign company remotely, or does this job require in-person interactions?

No easy at all as you're competing with the rest. Companies will want the best. Wanted to switch my career from a Lab analyst to UX/UI designer is not easy, I went to GA bootcamp and I'm currently looking for UX/UI job for several months Most companies wanted a bachelor's degree with design/computer science background. Gonna have a strong portfolio to make yourself shine. Go for networking to increase your odds getting hired.

Hey there! Happy to hear you found it helpful. It really depends on the time of year and what events are happening then - I personally joined a bunch of Slack groups and was informed of events that way. If you google "London UX design slack channels" you'll find several, would suggest joining those and seeing what's going on :)

I am looking to change my career. currently doing job and I have 2 options doing free course by google or doing a course from the institute which definitely is not affordable. what should I do in order to get ui/ux designer job in a good company. is it really possible relaying on google course? pl guide...
@leanderangst8 ай бұрын
Nice to hear you're thinking about changing careers, it's a big step. To answer your question, I think it IS possible, but just doing the Google course won't guarantee anything. I would definitely recommend doing the course, and at the same time start building your network - join UX communities on Slack, reach out to people on LinkedIn (watch my LinkedIn video!), and talk to other students taking the course about what they're doing/planning. Google also has resume building workshops in their program, and career coaching, so I absolutely think that will help. It's never 100% certain, but I think the resources they offer you give you everything you need to then pursue an entry level position :)
