Dude! We have almost the same story! 😁 Studied Economics, got tired of it, got in to Iron Hack in Amsterdam, quit the program, studied by myself for 7 months (dreamed about bugs of course 😆) and got my first job as a React dev in 2019! Wish we could meet!

I did pretty much the same thing, one thing I regret is not being better at CSS. CSS can be much deeper than I originally thought it was when I first started.

What area do you live in? Also, did you study any algorithms? How many projects did you build for your portfolio?
@TechbaseDev

I live in the Netherlands. I did not really get into algo's that much (just some basic stuff); till date never really had to use it (well, actually I did 2 months ago: Stack Overflow got me a solution within minutes ^^). I built about 6 projects; that'd be plenty for a portfolio as a junior.

This is really motivating. I'm about to start my job hunt after I complete my crud app with MERN. Curious, what sort of features did your crud apps have when you were hired, .i.e login and authorization? Also, did they have tests, and were they deployed with docker?
@TechbaseDev
@TechbaseDev Жыл бұрын
Some had login & authorization, some had tests and some where deployed with Docker. Overall you should more focus on showing off your knowledge of the ecosystem and coding in general. Not having authentication, deployed the app with Docker etc. is not a problem! Sorry for the late reply, but hopefully you've been able to get a job!

Damn I feel like we had pretty much the exact same timeline - I started around April 2020 and got my job in November. My job has ended up being very full stack though - a lot of PHP and vanilla JS, but sadly not many modern technologies like React. How come you switched places at 7 months - did you just quit the first one?
@TechbaseDev
@TechbaseDev 3 жыл бұрын
Crazy coincidence! Congrats on the job, it's great to be skilled in vanilla JS. You can always try to find a new job with some newer technologies if you aspire to. I didn't actually quit my job but decided to not go for an extension. Pretty unfortunate since I enjoyed working there, however, I had to work with Angular in the end which I didn't like. Will release a video about this in a few days!

How do you remember all those languages? I’m learning html and css now
@TechbaseDev
@TechbaseDev 3 жыл бұрын
Especially at the very start you'll forget a lot of things (since you don't use them often). I always kept notes of the things I expected to forget sooner or later and made sure I was able to find things quickly (that document is currently >250 pages). However, trough time you'll start memorizing most of it by doing things over and over again (especially when it becomes your job). I have to make a side note right here because I've for example not worked with PostgreSQL for over a year now. If someone asks me to work with it, I'll definitely need my notes 😅
