Fellow advisor here! It's always so interesting to hear how people fall into these roles, and I loved hearing your story! I work at a 4yr institution in TN and work primarily with students who want to become licensed teachers. I would love to hear your experience moving from the classroom to higher ed. I know there are pro's and con's to both and higher ed is definitely a world of it's own!

Hi Lauren! Thanks for being here. I’m happy to address my transition from the classroom to higher Ed. Do you have anything specific you’d like me to cover?

I only have a bachelor's in biology with a focus on wildlife research but I have been struggling to find a permanent job. I really hope I run into your fortune. I lost the opportunity to get a graduate assistantship right after graduation and now I can't afford an income cut to pursue higher education... hearing about your educational/professional journey has been very helpful

Sorry to hear you weren’t able to get a GA! Maybe you’ll be able to find a program that offers a great research assistantship with a competitive stipend. Many universities are trying to increase the graduate student stipend!

thanks for sharing your story!! Hearing how others got to their current career always helps me to visualize my own opportunities. I’m currently looking at academic advising as I wrap up my bachelors in social work and sociology. I’d love to hear what you think landed you your job! ❤️

Omg we have such a similar background!! I went to college 2011-2015 and worked in Americorps as well as college adviser for 2 years, and then got my masters in higher ed. I work in college admissions and I want to transition to academic/career advising soon! Loved hearing your story :)

Hi Rachel! That’s awesome! College admissions is a great stepping stone into academic and career advising! Wishing you the best of luck in that transition!

Current teacher applying for an Advisor Position! I have an M.Ed in School Counseling as well. Hoping I can craft a cover letter that conveys how my teaching and counseling intership experience translates to working with university students any tips?!
@wall_to_wall3 жыл бұрын
Fingers crossed for you! In my cover letter, I took exact phrases from the job listing and then elaborated on how I could bring that the the team. The ones I pulled out were: ability to work with a diverse population, strong communicator, and experience working with environmental science (I am in an environmental science advising position and taught earth and environmental high school before so this was easy to tie in). Take those specific traits and characteristics they’re asking for and tell them exactly how you can deliver those things!

Do academic advisors have moments where they act as a counselor to a client, rather than helping to guide students to their career paths? I am interested in being an advisor, but I don’t really want to feel like a therapist
@wall_to_wall2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I certainly help students navigate personal challenges as well, but I refer them to our counseling center when they need professional support since I am not a licensed counselor myself. I think “academic advisor” can sometimes be a misnomer because we support the students as whole through different challenges beyond academics. At least, I do!

I found this late but hopefully you respond I have been torn between a accountant or academic advisor. I love math I find tax law very interesting to be honest which is weird. I like helping people as well. If I was accountant I would be giving tax advice. But I would love love love helping high school students get to where they want to be. I think it would be more fulfilling. But I’m scared that if I choose the area of education I assume I won’t get a job or it would be hard to get a job. But with a accounting degree I’m almost guaranteed a job. I thought about getting a bachelors in accounting and a masters in education or psychology something to get me a academic advisor job. But I don’t think I can do that because the fields of studies are so different. I’m just torn between these two jobs.

Also my high school academic advisor told me she was not surprised that my test to see what job I should get based on my personality that everybody took was finance or accounting. Because I’m very closed off and reserved and don’t work well with other people and prefer to be alone and good with numbers.
