I just started breeding Bettas about 2 months ago. Now I am at the point where I don't cup the female in the breeding tank or wait for the male to make a bubble nest before I put the female in with him. I put their jars together on the shelf for 3 to 5 days, and card both sides of them so they only focus on each other. When I am ready to breed, I have nothing in the tank to distract them, only a 4" X 4" piece of plastic freezer bag taped to the side, floating on the top to protect the bubble nest from air circulation, otherwise the AC air current would pop the bubbles. I put the male in an hour before I put the female in. The second I put in the female, she swims up to the male and says "Hey baby give me a squeeze." 24 hrs later they have a bubble nest full of eggs and I remove the girlfriend. I have 10 breeding pair and this works like a charm on all of them. It's easier and I have fast results. I don't put in plants and the biofoam filter until the eggs have hatched, and the male is removed. Once I put in the plant & filter when I took out the female and the male got distracted and quit tending the eggs. So I had to take out the plant & filter out to get him to focus back on the eggs in the nest. Much quicker, less steps, and it works like a charm every time.

Update...I have a Magnolia limb come down in my yard. I clipped off a pot full of twigs, boiled them for 45 minutes and came up with 4 liters of dark Tannin Tea. Using the tea, I can pour it in a tank until the water is an amber color. No more waiting until the leaves leach out enough tannin to put the Bettas in. I just changed everything up, now using medium plastic totes. 2 days after I bought a new pair of bettas and put them in the tote, put 2 cups of tanning tea in, they started breeding. Now I have eggs due to hatch tomorrow. Used your method of filling the totes to the top, then lowering the water just after the female was turn loose with the male. BOOM, they started doing the squeeze & fetch the next day. When she started hiding behind the sponge filter I scooped her out and put her in a large bowl, no marks or injuries, it went perfect. Your way is the best way to induce breeding, all I did was use that method in a different container that is 6 inches from top to bottom. Glad I watched this video before I stated breeding. Try the tea, works great, you have to boil the leaves anyway you go, but in boiling them you have already leaches out some of the tannin, so why not go all the way and make the tea? You can freeze the portion you didn't use, for a later date.

Two things to consider... Putting bubble wrap under the leaf to help hold the bubble tension a little better. And also stealing bubble nests from other males if they were available. The first is part of my standard set up, the second I have done on occasion, especially in cases like this one where the male hasn't made a nest or his nest keeps breaking on him and he can't keep up with the nest and the egg care.
@BigCityBettas5 жыл бұрын
I sometimes use bubblewrap. But I find while it keeps the leaf afloat and can promote bubblemaking it can do quite the opposite with first time younger males who seem to believe the bubblewrap to be a finished nest and they don't learn to properly blow and maintain a nest this way. There were no nests available or I would've scooped them up for him to use. Thank you for the tips, excellent advice!

This is the BEST betta breeding tutorial on KZbin. I've been researching this for the last 2 years because I am so nervous about it, but I think I am finally ready to give it a shot. I've watched this video over and over as well as some other channels including Creative Pet Keeping. The information you give is excellent and it has really given me the inspiration to go forward. I just want to do everything right and not cause any suffering to the breeding pair or the fry. (Hey, what can I say, I ❤ my bettas like cRaZy) I just wanted to thank you for putting together this tutorial for people like me. I am feeling excited and confident now! I just hope it's a small batch of fry for my 1st time. A huge batch makes me nervous and I wouldn't have the heart to cull any of them. And, if I fail, which I might, I won't give up! Thanks again Big City Bettas! I feel like I can really trust you! ❤🐟❤

Hiya. Another fantastic and really helpful video. Thanks. One question though: What are your thoughts on the Betta Fish trade and how they are transported? In the UK they are transferred in tiny bags whilst dosed up with methylene blue to sedate them. The conditions seem really bad and almost all our pet shops source them from suppliers abroad. We are looking to possibly breed Bettas to supply a few local aquarium shops and at least make a small dent in the awful Betta trade. Our first spawn hatched but was sadly eaten by the male as we didn’t remove him quick enough. On the second spawn we have hopefully managed to remove him in time to keep a handful of little babies safe. Trial and error! When do you remove your males and when do you need to separate the babies to stop them from fighting their siblings? Thanks 🙏

Just make sure that the male isn’t getting too aggressive with the female. One of my males with the best genetics is an absolute jerk and literally tore the entire tail off of one of my females. She’s now pretty much scarred for life and won’t come near any other male betta anymore.
@BigCityBettas5 жыл бұрын
No worries here, neither had so much as a nip!! That's also why I pair condition. You can usually gauge a males aggression by watching how he reacts to his girl when she's safely contained and he cannot reach her. Thank you for the concerns though, sorry about your female.

Very cool vid! Good to see lowering the water level worked. As an alternative option, have you ever tried using a 'surrogate nest" by scooping some bubbles from another male's nest and place them under your male's almond leaf? The bubbles might help him get a jumpstart on building his own. Thanks for posting.

How many fry do each spawn yield for you? I know there can be hundreds of babies. It seems like it would be difficult to house and care for so many fish, especially the males since they aren't community fish. I am curious what you do with the many, many, Bettas after they mature a little.

Do you have to let your tank age out for 1/2 a year? Could I age it for just 1-2 months with a mature sponge filter maybe? Or would that still not be enough. Thanks!

Silly question, but how do you age an aquarium? No water changes?
@BigCityBettas5 жыл бұрын
There are no silly questions! What I mean by that is just letting your tanks sit, doing their thing, with normal water changes and letting time pass. As a aquarium ages it grows all sorts of microorganisms and infusoria, which provide great food sources for fry. Plus it allows for the cycle to really establish. I believe not having an "aged" tank is why some people have issues with spawns not growing properly.

Hi Amber, I posted this comment over on Simply Betta’s livestream you did with her back in 2017 or 2016. Thanks for sharing your betta experience! Thank you both so much for this information! I am so glad I scrolled back through your older videos to come across this. I hope you guys see this even though it’s an older live stream. So I have a male half moon betta that has some extreme fin curling going on especially the front ventral fins. After seeing this video I am thinking that it might just be genetic but I am not sure. I would love to know if you have had any betta with fin curling and how to get rid of it. Is their anything I can do to treat it or get rid of it? I have tried to research online but I can’t seem to find much info on it. I came across some info saying maybe low vitamin d or poor water quality. The thing is that the fins aren’t rotting so it doesn’t seem like fin rot. Would love to hear your experience with this and what you think. Anyways, love the videos. Always look forward videos from both of you guys. Thanks. Take care!
