I really enjoyed the video. I do mediocre quality home exhaust work too! It’s just satisfying to do it yourself.

Making mistakes is the best way to learn! It is a little annoying when I burn through the pipes, but I'm slowly getting better. And the exhaust just has to work -- it doesn't have to be pretty and it's not structural, so it's the perfect learning project, IMO.

Interesting good video. I don't own a DeLorean yet, but having these videos it will be a bless to work on the car.

I think most people don't have as many problems as I do. For example, in the 20 years I've had the car I've gone through 5 automatic transmissions. That's very unusual. Then here's all the mods on the car -- building this exhaust instead of using one from the DeLorean vendors, the fact that this is a 3.0L EFI conversion, my phone-as-key ignition system, etc. Which just means that as I add more of my own stuff to the car, I'll only have myself to blame when it stops working. :)

Someday I'll go electric and I won't have to worry about it anymore. Or having to replace the transmission. Again. Thankfully everything seems to be working at the moment...

welding tips and tricks on youtube lots of good info there on all types of welding processes. He covers TIG quite well. Get the basics right and the rest is "just" practice. Apparently.... Anyway Ive now watched a few of your videos and they are interesting, mainly because of the car there isnt many of them over here and the fact I thank god Australia doesn't salt roads and cause the rust you blokes have to contend with. Keep up the good work.

Having mentioned welding tips and tricks which is helpful, a welding course with an instructor that can point out what you're doing wrong and how to do it right is very much worth doing.

Thanks! I lived in California for a bit and brought my old northeast US car down there and they’d charge me extra to work on due to the rust; up here, that’s just part of the job. I’ll check out those tips and tricks - thanks. I really should just take a class. My welds definitely got (a little) better with all that exhaust welding, but I have a LONG way to go!

Yeah, calling what I do “welding” is generous. :) I did find that turning the power down helped, and I’m getting better with the pedal to avoid burning through. I’m sure I’ll have plenty more projects to practice one!

I love the fact that you are an ordinary Joe just like the rest of us, trhing their best! One thing tho that i have to say based on my experience with repacking mufflers, you should maybe have used some rock wool or just muffler packing material for those silensers instead of steel wool. In any case, great work regardless with great narrative!

Thanks! I've found the "how I did this thing" channels that show their mistakes and process to be much more interesting, and show that anyone can do it, not just specially-trained pros, so I thought I should do the same -- encourage people to try things. You have to start somewhere, after all. I learn more from those channels than the ones that cut out the mistakes, since I can see why things didn't work. Glad to hear you like it! I used stainless steel wool in part because that's what Car Chemistry recommended (although I didn't buy their stuff -- I had some from another project), and because I didn't know any better. :) It's working pretty well after about 3000 miles, but I wouldn't be surprised if I have to take it apart in the future, and then I'll be sure to look into alternate packing materials like you suggested!

@@joeangellxright on man! Great response. I hope that we will see more of the DeLo and other automotive related vids. I just binge watched all of your vidsand I have to say (on an unrelated note) that you have a very soothing and enjoyable voice and presentation style. I hope you continue here on KZbin! Ps, as for your explanation, I'm glad that you chose to work like that, showing everything, it is actually motivating. Please, don't be afraid to push the envelope on the jokes a little bit too. As for the exhaust, hey, if that's what they recommend, that's prob what you're gonna use. I just found it a bit odd, seeing as there are better materials to use and steel wool rusts when you sneeze at it
@joeangellx

Thanks! I only have the one car, but I have a bunch of unique mods planned, so this will shift a little from pure car repair to electronics upgrades to the car, and then likely some non-car projects, but I always want to make sure I show people what I did and how I did it and the mistakes I made so they can see what is possible on your own. As for the exhaust, it's possible that the CC silencers have something like stainless steel wool (which shouldn't rust, anyway) that isn't, but I didn't look into it. Whatever works!
@daves2433
@daves2433 Жыл бұрын
The pipe and cat were the same size, but you had a pipe expansion tool... d'oh I also find the angle grinder to be the best removal tool. Don't those silencers restrict the exhaust a lot? Figured that would be a problem for performance.
@joeangellx
@joeangellx Жыл бұрын
This kind of pipe expander is really only good for restoring pipes to properly round so you can slide smaller pipes in them. I’m pretty sure you need something more substantial (maybe hydraulic) to size an ID size up to an OD. Not that I didn’t try when I originally built this exhaust, mind you. The silencers probably do restrict things. I’ve never dybo’ed the car, so I can’t say how much. The 2.5” pipes are bigger than stock, so I have no idea if that cancels out some of the restriction. It wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still less restrictive than the stock exhaust, which runs the exhaust ports from the passenger side of the engine under the transmission and into the driver’s side manifold before going to the muffler. I’d really need to compare my car to another 3.0L automatic with a free flowing exhaust or a stock exhaust, but non one else around here has a 3.0L. I do know that owners of 2.8L cars (with automatics and stock exhausts, anyway)have said that mine does feel more powerful.

Unfortunately, my test drive was cut short by a seized brake caliper. I did fix that in the next video, though, and was finally able to see how the exhaust sounds on a drive. Here's a link to the part of that video where the car drives by the camera: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXyuin6El9idh68si=vdB3jyBPexpYQrkU&t=489 . I also recently had a chance to drive a stock DeLorean with the original exhaust. That design is very restrictive, with the passenger-side pipe running around under the transmission and into the driver's side header before entering the exhaust. That car is still quieter than mine, but I'm pretty close. I also have the even-fire 3.0L engine instead of the stock odd-fire 2.8L engine, so it'll sound different no matter what, even with the stock exhaust. I can still hear the motor while I'm driving, but now most of the unwanted noise is from a rattle on the "T" panel between the doors that I need to fix, and road and wind noise, which I haven't been able to figure out how to deal with quite yet. It's a few dB quieter at highway speeds (according to the sound meter on my watch, anyway), but most importantly the noise from the most annoying frequency range has been cut down significantly, and the car is much more pleasant to drive.

@@joeangellx i fitted a Flowmaster open exhaust but still run the crossover pipe. Not too loud but can make it loud when i want to. Had a nice V8 like sound and highway driving it is still surprisingly quiet... maybe i am used to it :)
@joeangellx
@joeangellx Жыл бұрын
I had a DPI exhaust from around 10 years ago. I thought it was pretty loud, which is why I built my own. But a few months ago I drove in a car with a DPI exhaust and it sounded fine, and not overly loud. I don’t know if something was odd about my old DPI exhaust, or if they changed the design or what. I think I’m a bit louder than stock but a bit quieter than DPI or DMC TX, but I’m not totally sure. Mostly I’m quieter than I was, which is good enough.
