I always find your videos highly educational and I love the content but I'll be honest I learn the most when you hit real-life experiences when your dog partner doesn't auto-magically do the right thing. Watching the correction and evolution of trust is where I get the most hope for my own pup and training.

You make it sound so easy. I, hand on my heart, can say that my dog is well trained. I can take her pretty much anywhere and she behaves. But recall is something I still do not trust her with. She's broken that trust so many times. We practice our recall word every day even on a leash around distractions, but in our home forest I still have her on a long lead. She's such a momma's girl that she would eventually come back, but I'm afraid she'll start driving game and run under a car or stumble upon one of the predators of which we have many and be left second in that battle. So whenever I'm alone with her in the forest, she's on the long lead and I blast a video or something from my phone in my pocket to make constant sound, driving animals further and in a sense controlling our surroundings also in that way.

It's not always easy. It's not only down to your training technique but it's down to your dog too. My lady dog wasn't good at recall but my current dog which is the same breed of dog is very good at recall.

@@Mwyse414 It's not really that the dog wants to ignore you, if it comes to prey drive it's just really hard for them to fight the instinct. Or it may be that the reward for coming back doesn't compensate what they could've gotten from the chase, so next time they will choose something that has more value. That's why practice is so important, alongside with HIIIIGH value rewards. Doing it often enough will definitely improve recall, but overdoing it may decrease value of the reward, and you may end up having to take a step back. It's very veeeeery hard to have perfect recall, and even a well trained dog (as the one the first commenter owns), may not always react. Practice not always makes perfect, but definitely creates progress, and that's what dog owners should aim for

All my dogs had/have a great recall, even my Akita can walk off leash in the forest. I always use a super treat for recall. One they get only when being called so it's special and highly rewarding. Also keep recall fun and diverse. Sometimes it's just that treat, sometimes it's a fun game, sometimes both and another time we do some tricks, play a search game or I call them when standing beside something interesting to show it to them afterwards. I agree with the long leash. I use them for a long time, many people take the leash off way too early and that ruins a lot of training and makes it harder and longer.

Thanks for the great reminders and tips! My dog and I have been working on his recall since I got him as a puppy two years ago. His recall still needs work as he still gets distracted by smells and some other things like pheseants or squirrels... for most instances, he does come but not right away. This is a good reminder of what to do when your dog listens "most of the time," like my dog does 😁 keep up the great work !

@@kostanikolic4379 I’ve found benefit in just gently grabbing my dogs collar when they come or having him come and perform a sit position and then rewarding. My labradoodle used to come, grab the treat, and run back to what they were focused on so being able to gently grab the collar/harness + sit position has helped him tremendously!

I tried to tell him to sit and he does and when i reach my hand he runs away again ahaha so yeah really stubborn dog Some youtubers said that you should walk to your dog and grab him and pull him to a spot from where you called him but that's useless if my dog is running away from me and if i chase him my dog will think it's a game and he will take it as a reward I am hoping it will fix it's self since my dog is around year and a half so I'm thinking it's just a phase like many other phases before that

When I used to walk out in the open with my dog off leach and she was distracted by a rabit or something I would call her name and whistle one time very loud and then start to walk slowly in the other direction. In a way im telling her I know you want to chase the rabit, but I am going the other way. This method has never failed once and worked with all the dogs I had.

The wonderful thing about collies is that they get addicted to things and as long as it’s something that you have control of you are in a very powerful position. Marzieh is addicted to jumping for bubbles so as long as I have a tub of bubble stuff in my pocket I have complete control. Jasper was addicted to catching balls rather than chasing them before he got cataracts. Another collie would “find” me. I would hide behind a tree and keep very quiet. He would run past and catch my scent and turn straight to me. Air sniffing!

I have a whippet and live on the edge of a nature reserve where we often walk. Sometimes she scents a deer, rabbit, or squirrel and chases them. In these moments she won't come back when called. The switch has flicked, the eyes are closed (so to speak), the ears are back and she's gone. But I'm fine with this! She's living her best life, free and happy. If I wait around close to the place where she last saw me she'll eventually come back. Occasionally I shout her name, especially if we're deep in the woods, so she knows which direction to come back to, and when she's ready she comes back, panting like crazy. The longest I've ever had to wait is 15 minutes. She doesn't want to run away from me, she loves me and wants to live with me forever, but sometimes she goes off on the hunt and I have to wait. I'm fine waiting because I'm not in a hurry. It's her walk, not mine. I want her to live her dog life to the fullest.

I personally make sure the leash is always loose, and attach it to the back of a pull/sled harness rather than a collar so it's more likely to trail behind than get caught-up in their feet. I also don't use multiple long lines at once, though, so I can't help with that, but the pull harness won't make them face-plant if the other steps on their line. Personally, biothane is my favorite. I have two nice leather ones that were made out of a single hide each (cut in a curl), but it takes a lot of oiling, use and stretching to get the curl out, and they're hard to find of decent quality leather and not just barely tanned cowhide you need to heavily work yourself (I have one of each, and the one that was already beautiful and ready to go cost a small fortune). And pressed leather hide is trash, and nylon will cut you like a squirrely guy in a dark alley. 😂

Now I understand your point of view if the E-collar all of sudden stop working. The same can be said if your dog see something its never seen before and runs off. So there's literally two negatives with both Balance and Positive training for off leash. With positive training there's no guarantee no matter how much your dog loves you if there's that one thing or something its never seen and that dog runs it's gone. Same for the E-collar by some 1% chance it fails hopefully by the corrections that been made by not recalling your pup will come or not

I'm a balance trainer just for flawless recall, venomous snakes, and chasing vehicles and large predatory animals (or small animals that will still mangle them). Failing on any of these has that 1% chance of getting you a dead dog, so I don't mess around, especially since all my dogs are off-leash at least 90% of the time. I don't think most owners of pets require this high level of demand, but my dogs are either problem foster dogs in professional behavior training or my own working dogs. Most owners use a leash off-property, don't have a dangerous dog, and/or don't work in dangerous environments with public access.

I have a 6m old mini bernedoodle and training goes very well in our home. But every time we leave the house, she has no interest in the treats or toys we use to train. It's like everything goes out the window. Especially with leash training. She pulls no matter the command or distraction I use. I have spent time with gentle socializing and exposing her to all different situations. What can I do instead to keep her focused on me or understand that she needs to heel and not pull?

This is interesting. How do you decide when it is a situation to 'test' their recall vs let them have freedom to go where they want if it seems like the recall might fail and it's otherwise a safe situation? For example, if my dog is playing with a friend, and it's all going well, I'm not going to call her right in the thick of things, like if she's mid-chase, unless I really need to. I'm going to wait until there is a short pause where I think I can catch her attention and she'll be more likely to succeed. In this situation I would probably have let my dog run to their other human and not used a recall cue if they seemed likely to blow it off. On the other hand if she was running toward a stranger or strange dogs I'd have called her and hoped for the best. Is the importance of maintaining the structure and focus of 'fetch' the priority for you here? Inertia's interest in fetch is probably higher than my dog's, who LOVES to run to one of her people, which seems to be part of what naturally reinforces her recall. I'd probably have let her run to her other person, then called her back, ie get her when I know I can get her, and then she hasn't refused to come when called. She would have, however, broken the structure of the fetch game. This isn't crucial for us since I let her choose when she wants to play fetch and it isn't a major reinforcer for her or one I can expect to rely on in most contexts.

If he doesn’t listen in the training safe environment then he goes on a long line even if the environment is safe because he didn’t listen and he definitely understands that. Our elderly pup really loves her walks, and we love taking her. She has a bad habit of stopping as we head back (she’s not sniffing) and no amount of cajoling or excitement or pulling on the leash (gently) will budge her. There have been a few emergencies when we’ve had to head back and even in her harness, it feels like we’re dragging her. I’ve recently tried stopping with her on a short leash and praising the heck out of her when she starts moving again but honestly, I’m not sure how to handle a reluctance to come back from a walk. What would your suggestions be?

I think if there’s a considerable chance the dog won’t listen that we must make sure our dogs are managed and under control. Every dog is different. Really depends on the training for many dogs as to whether or not they will be reliable off leash in my view.

Also I didn't use a long lead when training my dog. I used an extendable lead. I know most trainers don't like extendable leads but what I done on every walk is I set the lead to a certain length depending on where we were and locked it at that length. Like if I was on a footpath on a main road I would reel it out no further than the edge of the footpath then let it slack off when she wasn't pulling. Or if I was in a park or grassed area she would get the full length of the 15' lead.

A neighbour had a dog that tended to attack other dogs (especially mine) and it wore a shock collar. Then one day the dog attacked my Jasper and she’d forgotten to turn the collar on! It wasn’t a bad attack. 15yr old Jasper is now deaf and I don’t want to have to chase him round the house so I have convenient little tubs of cat kibble scattered about and I just have to hold out a few kibble and he comes fast 😂

Great tips. My dog, cocker, is not so willing to give up meeting or playing with other dogs. If his is already "talking" with other dog, he tends to "grow deaf". We do practise recall with treats or toys, but... He would rather ignore a rabbit and come back to me than leave his new dog-friend. I sometimes think its unfixable. Usually I try to pretend I am going away to make him a little afraid of being left alone - it helps, but I would rather have him come back without it. Guess we need some dog-actors😂

I'm working on this with my dog. The things that have helped are asking her to sit before she give me eye contact, then giving the cue 'go play' I only letting her play for 30 40 seconds before calling her back with 3 bursts on the whistle. Then do it again. The reason for only letting her play for such a short time is I've noticed the recall has a higher chance of failing if I let her play longer.

As the owner of a dog which is reactive I would recommend keeping your dog on a long line. Your dog means no harm by greeting the other dogs, but if he came up to mine for example (who is always on lead if there are other dogs), there would be teeth. And then my dogs reactivity is getting worse, your dog becomes nervous of other dogs which could in turn make him reactive. We're working to reduce my dog's reactivity but as of 6months training, I have to be honest, I'm seeing no improvement (and we're working with a nationally certified +ve only trainer).

I consider myself a balance trainer, but the only things I will use aversive training methods for are 1) avoiding venomous snakes, 2) plastering themselves to the ground at the sight of a moving vehicle, and 3) recall. If they're not all FLAWLESS, you've got a dead dog. Most dogs can absolutely learn them with strictly positive techniques, but some can't do so quickly. I have used shock collars for this, especially with snakes and recall around large predators, but only after they have learned the recall command and it is already excellent around normal distractions. The snake thing is important to me because the punishment must be associated with the snake, not you. They're going to see and smell it long before you are in situ, so they need a safe situation set up where you can see the snake quicker than they can and you can issue the "punishment" as soon as they approach and they don't know that you issued the punishment. I combine it with an auto-recall so they can be rewarded, as well.

Although Zak seems like a legit nice guy trying his best, I don't feel he has what it takes to train a serious dog or have the ability to work with dogs with severe reactivity and or aggression. Until he works and raises a dog like a Dogo Argentino, a Cane Corso, a Tibetan Mastiff I don't feel he will be a top trainer. He is always training easy dogs, which is fine but until he proves his methods with a serious breed I can't get behind everything he says. I would absolutely love to be proven wrong and see him train a police or military dog with his methods and have it a success but I think that's just fantasy and can't happen.

Have you ever stop to think that what youare calling “easy dogs”is me connecting with the individual dogs so that the training process is easy. I come at this from such a different place than the types of dog trainers you are likely use to. The reason you think people are working with harder dogs are because they are literally provoking and promoting conflict between a person and a dog to cater to their ego. Stop falling for it!

Agreed. Zak is entertaining. He first caught my eye with his trick training but that gets old. I wouldn't trust him with a serious dog. He only picks the nice, easy ones to work with and always in a completely controlled environment (although he claims otherwise). His methods wouldn't hold up in the real world.

We use the ecollar for emergency situations. I think a lot of positive reinforcement trainers see it as a lazy way to "train" a dog recall, and I think bad dog owners/trainers do use it this way. However we put in the work to train recall without the use of tools, with longlines and a ton of cheese :) If we go out and I have to use the ecollar more than one time, that tells me my dog is not in an emotional state where she should be off leash. We pack up and go home or I take out my longline. Then we do recall drills at home for a while before we try offleash time again. We have only had to pack up and go home once in two years of ecollar use and that was over a year ago. I'm not a dog trainer but I truly believe my dog would be fine offleash without the ecollar, and I think it'd make my life a lot easier if we went without it. However, if for some reason my dog blows a recall cue, I'd rather have it than nothing else.

The word I use for my dog to stay is "Wait!" And she will stop and wait. Most of the time she will wait and whine because she wants to go but she won't go unless I say "ok" or I take a step forward. She is like your dog inertia. She will come back to me 95% of the time. Just two weeks ago I had her off lead and we came across another person walking their dog. I didn't know they were so close and that they were in the park. But I looked over to my left and my dog was walking their way. I told her wait and she stopped for a second then started heading their way. So I said no , wait. And she stopped. She was unsure what to do and she was about 6" away from the other person and their dog. So I told her "come". She then came to me and followed me. My dog is very friendly but if I knew that person was there I would have had her on a lead before they got that close because I know my dog would have tried to approach them and I didn't know if that person would have been ok with her approaching them or if the other dog would have attacked her. I'm just lucky my dog will do what I ask her to do most of the time. Thanks to Zack and other training channels I watch I've used various positive reinforcement techniques to train my dog myself. When she does what I ask her to do she gets her favourite treat , lots of love and praise. For a two year old dog she's a very well behaved dog.

My Westie is like that. Great dog, well trained but if he sees another animal, he takes off. I was told his breed can't be trusted not to run towards other animals because the prey instinct in his breed is too strong. I wonder if that's a fact.

I've had that happen, use a higher reward treat. I use freeze dried chicken hearts. If they won't come all the way I'll throw one half way then hold a second one out so they have to come to me for the second treat.

This is my biggest problem. My dog is a runner. She’ll run in the street in traffic. I just adopted her last year at eight years old. Not sure why she thinks it’s a game when I’m having a heart attack from fear of her getting killed.

We struggle with the come command unless our little dude has his electric collar on. With it on he has 100% recall command attention. I set it on an 18 out of 100 strength and it just is a little buzz to him. I tested it for any type of pain on my wife and she only yelped once it went over 40. As for not having your dog on leash...maybe every dog, including ones trained by you should never be off leash.

See going back to what we said yesterday that I also agree with ecollas allow u to have a chance at a off leash life but they can and do. Ignore it unless u increase the voltage even I said no at that point my poor dog was basically tazed to stop That I don't see as a good experience for any normal house hold pet Or any pet really outside of marines or police or any type of canine combat scinaro I tried it and it works to a degree but it's not nice I don't feel comfortable and These level 6 or 7's I'm hearing my dog shrugs off like it's nothing x by 10 then ur close to getting my old dog to listen And its not fair 100%agree on that

Yes. I agree. People should not be relying on the electric collar if they think their dog is unlikely to listen without it. Of course you know my recommendation is to never use a shock collar.

Work with an experienced dog trainer when wanting to implement the e-collar. It's a tool that requires skill to use.

The proper use of an ecollar requires that the dog already have a strong recall, most likely taught using R+ methods. There's no shortcut. The ecollar is like a remote tap on the shoulder saying "hey Buddy, go home" when they are outside of vocal range or too distracted to pay attention to it.

And when not using an e collar for recall and the dog blows off the command then what???? There's always a risk to having your dog offleash. I'd personally rather have the ecollar as a back up then nothing. And the goal of using the ecollar is to ~not~ use it. If trained properly you shouldn't have to use.

Is it cruel to NEVER let your dog completely off lead outside? Because I have tried , and she will never come back to me willingly. I always have to sneak up on her, and she has nearly got killed so many times from running into a road. She is completely unmotivated by toys and food. So am at my wits end.

I had the same problem with my gsp. I live two blocks from a very busy road and I couldn't risk him getting run over if he got away from me one more time. Got an e-collar for him, problem solved. And no, you don't have to use the electric function. Beep and vibrate will work just fine. He can run off lash at the beach now, and I have no doubt he will come every time I call him.

I think it's more cruel to put your dog in a situation where she's likely to get hurt than to always keep her on a leash. When my dog was a puppy and didn't have a reliable recall, I put a medium length leash on her, but didn't hold on to it when we were in places like a fenced-in yard . Then she could move freely, but if she tried to bolt when it was time to come in, I could catch the leash even if I couldn't catch her.

It was hard when she was a puppy, but i have trained her to do everything else, just though her genuine adoration of me! But i cannot whole heartedly trust her to com back to me in a public area.

Why would you shock your dog to get them used to the collar? Do you expose your child to heat in case they touch the hot stove? They come programmed to know and understand how to respond to to a bad stimulus. That is how they navigate the world

Electric collar trainers would say that you need to find your working levels and provide the meaning behind the shock. Obviously I think that is a primitive way to communicate with a dog. But apparently a good half of the dog training world or more disagrees with me… go figure… And it’s 2023.

Puts the dog through a lot of unnecessary stress and is confusing to them. Not to mention the reliance it will create on the e collar especially if they are not following the laws of classical conditioning to ensure the dog is responding to voice and not the collar

The E-Collar is an attention grabber that causes no physical damage. You just are limited in your talent and would prefer to waste massive amounts of time on the simplest things like recall. So please stop sounding foolish when you talk about advanced technology that you know nothing about. Also, if e-collar is used correctly then it is more so there for emergencies not for training. You better hope your frisbee or treat helps in sticky situations but more than likely you would avoid those situations so there will be nothing to prove.

@Tony DiGiorno 🤦🏻‍♂️ You definitely should not be using a E-collar your the type of person is the reason why E-collar get such a bad reputation.. E-collar is used for Training/recall. You need to teach your dog and make sure they know the commands by treat or toy training 1st then. Start using leash corrections outside then when they passed that pair it with the E-collar on low level.. If you have your dog off leash and its not trained to understand sit or down or stay when its off leash and you have a kid or dog running by WTF are you going to do?!?

You shouldn’t be using it if you’re correcting a dog with it. Sounds like you push it when you’re mad. @@zakgeorge Recall, leash and basic obedience are clearly skills that are carefully taught without the need for e-collar up front . To sharpen their skills and gain faster results, then pairing voice commands with the e-collar after the dog knows the commands is highly effective and works faster than trying to throw toys and food around. especially in loud and distracting environments.
