Without a doubt one of the nicest planned out insulation I’ve EVER seen. Videography was well done also. The only thing is I think those ground rods should’ve been on the outside of your concrete base. But no matter what you can never calculate where a strike will go. I love my rohn 45G tower at 60 feet but that is the most beautiful little tower I’ve ever seen. It’s like artwork in your backyard. Hope to work you soon👍👍👍😎🇨🇱 W5PN

I was thinking the same about the ground rods. Also, I wish I could have been there to do the concrete for you. It's what I did for a living. You made a few minor mistakes, but it will last your lifetime I'm sure. Lastly, I would have liked to see the method for raising the mast. Excellent job!

@@seeharvester could you elaborate? Intent in not to distract from this build but to educate the next builder. From my limited knowledge (absolutely zero experience) I think the rebar is to close to the edge of the cement.

@@judd_s5643 Well, to start with, I would have dug the hole perfectly square with flat sides, maybe even "bell" shaped slightly, ie., a little larger at the bottom. You want totally undisturbed soil, so hand finishing the hole nice and flat and smooth is best. The gravel at the bottom I would think is optional with this particular antenna, since the legs are not embedded in the concrete like some brands are. Even so, it's ok as long as it is compacted sufficiently. Next, I would build a perfectly square and level form around the top; secure enough and exact enough to use as a support for the rebar cage and base anchor bolts, and to take any measurements off of. The rebar steel cage I would have built out of the hole, with continuous 'stirrups' around the vertical bars as per standard practice when building a concrete column or the like. Like you mentioned, none of the steel cage should be touching the dirt (or gravel). I would probably weld the cage, and install the anchor bolts so that they were hooked around some additional horizontal bars that are part of the cage. (I don't think we saw the actual anchor bolts did we? I'm assuming they were hook shaped.) This assembly can be held off the gravel with concrete bricks, or suspended by strong boards laid across your secure, extra strong formwork. Likewise the the base plate could be supported by the formwork when the concrete was poured. The concrete could be poured a hair high to allow for a slight slope to drain water, and there is a tool for finishing the edges while still wet. (instead of a metal file) The grounding rods should have been left outside of the concrete, as a lightning strike could possibly damage it. I hope all of that made sense; it's hard to describe in a comment. I'm probably just overly picky, but when you do concrete and masonry for a living... well... All that said, I'm sure his tower will be just fine, particularly in his lifetime. Oh, I would have thermite welded the grounding rods too. Speaking of ground systems, the rest of his is superb. A very detailed installation - well done. The ground rods should be relocated outside the concrete base. One lightning hit can crack / destroy the concrete base, due to the moisture content instantly changing into steam.

Great video, well done. One problem - Ground rods should NOT be in concrete. A lightning hit will break concrete.

That was my reaction. Concrete, even after fully cured, contains a lot of moisture, especially when in the ground. It is also quite conductive. So in a lightning strike, if the current is not fully dissipated to ground elsewhere, the current can pass through the concrete, heating the moisture to beyond the boiling point, turning it to rapidly-expanding vapor, and this extremely high pressure can cause the concrete structure to shatter. In this example, the ground rods partially encased in concrete will dissipate much of the lightning strike through the concrete, which is bad. The simple solution is to add external ground rods.

Are those brass looking bolts with silver nuts some sort of special gripping/galling setup that they don’t need any lock washers or nylocks to keep them from backing out from wind vibrations? I’ve never seen those before. What a beautiful job, you should be very proud of yourself… your child obviously is from their post, well deserved respect from a ham since 85, and former tower installer for Motorola, this is absolutely the best tower install I’ve seen and best videography. (Minus the ground rods in concrete boo boo, please disconnect those rods, consider the loss a cheap price to pay and sink 3 new rods outside of the concrete…. What a piece of art!!! PS: your cameraman/camerawoman deserves a raise. PS#2: buy a torque wrench. 😉

Very good video and nice installation. I would have recommended using copper ground rods, and all copper wire for your grounding. Also, spacing the ground rods out from the base of the tower instead of inside the concrete. Enjoy that hex beam, apparently they are very good antennas.

Hey it looks great , but you might want to cut those grounds off at the slab and run new lines over the concrete out to ground rods away from that concrete base , if a big bolt of lightening should have to discharge fast it can bust that concrete base all apart . Won't be the first time that happened

Hey guys I need to add something else about tower installation you need to put gravel on the bottom of the hole then set your tower section or short tower base directly on that gravel bed before pouring concrete that way you won’t get those tubes plugged and allow water condensation build up inside the tower legs because it can and over time split the legs from freezing this can be detrimental to your tower.

That looks great. However, if you experience any noise issues or higher order harmonics I would recommend removing all fasteners that are not CRES 316 stainless steel fasteners and replace them with CRES 316 stainless steel fasteners as they are less ferrous. I was a USN ET COMMS and fasteners that comprised of the wrong materials degraded our COMMS. Rust, other forms of non-linear junctions, magnetic materials, and unbonded materials produce harmonic signals like rabbits which would create noise for other systems (it could jam them and/or violate frequency allocations and regulations). Of course we were on giant rust buckets in an exclusively salt water environment so materials and electrolysis were a bit more prevalent for us. Did you know that in the USA, we have to put our ground rods a minimum of 6-12" away from the concrete. It is because that if your tower takes a direct lightning hit, it could shatter your concrete base.

Thank you , There is a ton of information here that only a moving picture / still can translate, you have certainly done your homework , and have taken the time to do things properly and spend some hard earned cash along the way I'm sure , As I work in TV production land, thanks also for recognising a international audience using little dialogue and big arrow animations along the way, The USA is all about the USA , While most of the products shown are not known to us here all the way down at the ass end of the Pacific Ocean, here in New Zealand there is enough there to find alternatives, and do the conversions to metric etc. Being a newbie to the hobby I like to do things right 1st time around and as I have an engineering background most things here make total sense before I embark on erecting my tower , I would imagine you will get many years from this tower and antenna maintenance free and any future upgrades / maintenance will be made much easier , a little anti-seize grease goes a long way 10 yrs down the track. It is clear I need to study and do some more homework around earthing as like the previous comment ( Rico ) I am not sure if I would embed my tower earths into the block-work as a rule, and would prefer to run them on the outside of the base. My late father lived in Florida and lightning strikes to his property blew apart any concrete structures with rebar within, but that is just a gut feel on my part and you may have some solid reasoning behind this decision. At best I need to do some learning around bringing it into the house and some kind of firewall should you get hit. the gas arrestors and cat 5 / FTP decoupler etc make very good sense, loading them into a earthed copper housing even better before bringing them home to the radio shack , Many thanks again for documenting the process you have filled a fair few holes in my own knowledge. That was my one concern. Incredible build though. If there's any moisture in the concrete (and there will be), then funneling energy from a lightning strike through there will cause it to flash boil and blow the side of out the base. Easily rectified with 3-4 deep rods around the base though and connect them in properly. Love the attention to detail and the great video editing!!

A few things, Earthing should have been on outside of concrete where it could be inspected or replaced if blown away. Steel rod is not great conductor in this case. STP cable or CAT6a or CAT7 cable for control/data as RF from coax will be all through it. Guying, guys at each 3M, especially if you want to climb although, yours is pretyy low at only 6-7M.

Great professional work you have put into setting up your tower. Im just curious of why you have a rotator for what looks like a multi-directional antenna you have, unless the antenna is not multi-directional. Clean Installation. Good job. Needs one mowing season to understand, that guy wires have to be lifted up with support posts, to a level above the own hight. You will have your reasons but all that work, time and money for a total hight of 30ft? Anyhow - 👏 congrats and I suppose, with such nice property, It was all just an exercise, for the next, real project(s). Instead of H1000 and for long runs in general, always use Hardline, real low loss 1/2" or 7/8" coax. Cost not much more, often cheaper if used but many advantages, behind losses. Well done in any way!

Thank you for advice. Yes support posts were set to the safe hight :) it shouldn't be the problem. I just will need to re-adjust the pressure on the guy ropes after on or two months again to theyr final position. Best 73

Be careful with overtension! Until you have no detailed information and a rope tension measure meter!! In my opinion, you don't need any guy wires. The top load is so small. This stage truss elements can handle this load easy. The top of the tower must move under windy conditions! Some lite pretension for the ropes is ok. But don't force it! Every kg tension goes to vertical load! Possible to do, but then you need additional guy wiring in the middle of the tower, half the hight. Otherwise and of course, greatly exaggerated, you get a banana.... Always keep in mind, even nothing will happen with your installation, steel bends aluminum breaks. Some looose pretension is completely sufficient. However, the tower is welcome to fall a bit into the ropes. A free-standing, self supporting 30m steel tower has a deflection of 70cm under load! Unrestrained! You need some dynamic!! just my 2 cents
