Buckin, great advice for folks building a business, I’ve had a landscaping and lawn service for 13 years and I have had made many friends working for them. I have always found the above and beyond my bids to do for them and every time it was so appreciated. And friends it doesn’t matter if it’s a $100 job or $500,000 and I’ve done them both and all in between. Show them you appreciate them and the opportunity to serve them. Great video buddy! Love you all!

I work full time for the railroad but my side work is lawn care and tree trimming and removal. All the business that I do is from word of mouth. Other customers telling other people. I have to say I am always busy from it! I don’t have the nicest truck and my lawn tractor is from the 80s but I maintain everything and take pride in my work! Your advice Buckin is spot on!

That was AWESOME.... I trim trees for free, some times more then I like its a massive oak or maple with a house or garage lean. I started in 2008 mowing lawns for the elderly in my town, it started as 3 lawns. I'm up to 14 lawns and the local funeral home. To put a perspective on it, I was hatched in April of 73 and retired in 2008 from building race cars and engines. I have never been so happy in my life as I am now just helping out where and when needed. A cup of coffee and a smile is all I need to keep me going. Thanks for the videos and the story's in them. BACON.
@OlyArmsAR156 жыл бұрын
duce wags that’s very kind of you helping the elderly people in your community. I would be skeptical of the funeral home though. Those places run such a racket... they surely have money to pay a landscaper (or you)!
@ducewags6 жыл бұрын
Mickey Colgan. Oh they pay, that's for sure. The funeral home has problems keeping a "handyman" around that is on call for snow removal in the winter and general property maintenance during the summer. Kids now days don't want to work for $20 an hour, I guess the internet and gaming has broken more then we have known now days. I guess the thought of 2 feet of snow at a time on call frightens people away from work, or just the thought of manual labor.

Excellent advice as usual, I can't believe there was a thumbs down on this... LOL... I would only add: There is always someone looking for a reason, so don't give them one if you can help it... Also remember, besides the word of mouth, that you have an audience looking on. Especially in this line of work. I used get most of my follow-up business from neighborhood on-lookers. It was always a boost when they would wait patiently for me, to get out of a tree, just to ask me if I had time to come give them an estimate on theirs.... I would frequently give my guys your same good advice. And then prove it, with weeks of more work, with the same Neighbors.

Rules I learned from my Father in law: keep the trucks clean. clean up at the end of the day, heck even during the day if you need to. pick up your tools, keep them in good order. Don't just think of this job, think of them as a repeat customer.

Yes they are. Clean trucks, first thing we look for in someone coming to our house. We were looking for a new plumber; going to work one morning (early) was behind someone at a light. Nice clean truck for first thing in the morning. Wrote down the name and number and website. We've been using them for about 7 yrs now.

Yes, Buckin', Yes. I needed to hear this. Subconsciously i already did, but this was the icing on the cake that "owed" the party. The only thing i think i would have put a bit more emphasis on, which you had touched is; quality of your work. Be up front with what you can and cannot accomplish comfortably. There's nothing wrong with recognizing those things and being up front and honest. As a business owner of a residential tree company that's been rapidly growing, this is fantastic advice an makes me giddy to tackle the estimates i have lined up for Monday! Thanks Buckin'!

Welcome all new subscribers. Absolutely! You have to sell your self as the fight person to do the job doing it in good taste. Going the extra mile on a job will get your name out there very quickly. Everything you said is correct and will have you more recommendations for jobs than you can keep up with because you did the job right and conducted yourself in a professional manner. My oldest daughter had a company come in to do some tree work and they were a disappointment. They were everything you were saying not to be. Needless to say they won't be called for the next job. Hope the young guys listen to your wisdom and start out right to become the success they want to be. Thanks for sharing your experience and words of caution for them in starting out. Buckin, that is the exact advise that most folks in business for themselves need to hear. I ran my boat repair business for 11 years with zero advertisement cost. All word of mouth from one boat owner to the next. Show up when you say you will, be up front about the cost and treat their property like it was your own. Yuppers! Treating your customers fair will make positive impressions on people you've never even met. I was doing small engine work a few years back and an old boy brought me a snowblower in the middle of the summer. Said "it runs fine but don't shut it off or it won't start till tomorrow" 🙄. With a smile I said "ya I'll take a look at it". -come to find out his brother told him about me over a cup of coffee that morning and he couldn't wait to meet me. (I knew his brother for years) In small business - once word hits the coffee shop it'll either make ya or break ya! Your choice, so do work you can stand proud of. Thanks for the talk Buckin'!

Hey Buckin. I've been logging for about 6 months now. My boss is almost 60, been totin' a saw since his teens. We just started a small walnut/maple job on this older couple's farm today. On the way home from work, my boss said he logged on their property 30 years ago. He's logged the man's parents' farm as well, and some of their other relatives. They called him. Everything you said in this video rings true in this situation; my boss went the extra mile in his younger years so he can still have work now, and lord willing I'll learn from him.

14 days, 18 hours, 12 minutes and 39 seconds 'till BUCKINSTOCK! Howdy Folks! GREAT STUFF indeed. In an age when people oftentimes feel short-cheated, they are almost always wowed to receive more than they expect. Bidding the job right is sooo crucial. Many will bid it cheap simply to land the job, then try to bilk the customer out of whatever savings they had expected to gain from going with the low bid in the first place. Being clear about what they can expect will often help them to understand the difference in your bid. If you underbid you are much less likely to go the extra mile... I call it being short-sighted. Excellent chat Buckin' 'Ol Boy! Be Kind, Be Blessed!

Great advice Buckin'! And one thing is for sure. There is ABSOLUTELY NO BETTER ADVERTISING, than word of mouth. It beats telephone books, t.v. commercials, billboard, etc. It just can't be beat. And what you are telling folks is no better way than to get word of mouth advertising. Many years ago I worked for an uncle of mine who had a carpet laying business. He Never Ever advertised in any way. We could have worked 7 days a week, his business was that good. And the reason he did so well was because he had the same set of skills that you are talking about. Good job. Jim

Good stuff... Being 20 plus years self employed my favorite experiences are when the customers want to feed the whole crew! They so appreciate what we are doing they want a sit down meal to personal get to know everybody and say thank you. The only downfall is the spreads these farm wives put out completely knock the crew out especially after pie at the end! 😀

Oh...and treat em fair a few times and they won't even bother calling anybody else!

Couldn't agree more. Putting caps on prices and sticking to your word no matter what, and once you start calling your long term customers your friends that's when you know that your business is going to last for the long haul and things get easier. People will always call you first and are willing to wait until your available. A honest successful business is a network of friendship and trust. It's not about trying to get rich on your first job its about building a good network of people who trust you and will be loyal for the long haul. Work your ass off care about your customers and be kind and then you can never fail

You really get it man! Be on time, be honest, be confident, be polite, set correct expectations, take pride in what you do, do the work the best you can, get paid repeatedly by the customer and their friends and family. Thank you for remembering those to me! For me me it is most important that I can trust you. If you manage that I will return to you exclusively and recommend you with confidence.

Are exactly right Buckin I workd for a manufacturing facility for 43 years as a Millwright I always gave it 100% And when I left the job site it look like I was never there. When the next break down come along they would say go back there and get that guy in the millwright shop so what you're saying is 100% right.

Very good Billy. Sound advice, not only for business, but for life. My Dad taught this to me from the time I was able to remember anything. This is his short version.......Boy, it only takes a little bit of effort on your part to out shine the other guy. I can remember as a boy being tired of hearing that. But as time went on I finally realized what a simple truth that was and have used it in business and my personal life ever since, and I'm 74. Have passed it on to my kids and now my grand-kids. Thanks for the video. Just subbed.
