If you haven't watched her yet I also highly suggest Lab Muffin, she's not dermatologist but she is a chemist and gets really deep into the studies around certain ingredients and she documents her own skin in detail so she knows exactly what product did what.

This video couldn’t come at a better time! It’s so refreshing for you to say to seek out a professional opinions because “skinfluencers,” as available as they are, aren’t the cure-all, and lately, it feels like they do more harm than good. You end up having to do a lot of the guesswork. I’m 23, and my skin has suddenly become so problematic (and skinfluencers have not helped) to the point where I’m finally going to see a dermatologist. I hope to have the same results as you!

I had countless bottles of serum anointment from my mom. I then started watching Dr. Dray, I never had a skin care routine I just put on whatever I felt like putting on that day and all the sudden I had a massive break out. Dr. Dray convinced me to wear sunscreen daily simplify my routine use salicylic acid and so far my face is getting much better. I love her.

Dr. Shereen Idriss (she's a dermatologist and you can find her yt!) actually talks about hyaluronic acid that can be drying instead of hydrating, that's why for dry & dehydrated skin, she recommends using moisturizer with glycerin in it or other ingredients other than HA. Actually I found that using HA serum alone dries my skin too, so I've been switching serum, or if I yse my HA serum, I tend to put heavy duty moisturizer

What really worked for me, as someone with oily skin except for dry patches right on my cheekbones (???), was two Neutrogena products. 1) the Ultra Gentle Hydrating Daily Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin. The creamy version, not the foamy version. I use it in the shower with a soft puff for a gentle exfoliation. 2) Neutrogena Hydro Boost City Shield put on about 10 minutes after the shower. 10/10 My skin is so smooth and clear. Love it.

Hey! Love your videos! I would like to point out one thing though as a doctor, please make sure to follow up with your dermatologist regularly about the clindamycin, it's an antibiotic therefore prolonged usage will result in building resistance, and thereby rendering it useless (as the bacteria get immune to the drug and the drug doesn't kill the bacteria anymore). Worst case scenario, the drug won't work in case you need it for some other serious condition in the body. But I love your channel and your general personality is lovely, this is such a warm channel to come to! Wish you all the best! And your skin looks bomb :P

Tretinoin is the bomb. I have been using the science based active trio of sunscreen tret and vit C for decades. I do a glycolic acid night twice a week. I feel like people “can” figure out their skin , but only want to because they think its going to be cheaper, but they’re really underestimating the amount of trial and error and how often times it ends up being way more expensive and complicated than if they just went to a derm in the first place 🥴

That depends because a lot of people have trouble finding the right dermatologist. When I went to the dermatologist he said my acne had run it’s course. Thats was over 5 years ago and I’m still dealing with acne. Also in the US if you don’t have insurance, which is already pretty expensive, being able to afford a single appointment with a dermatologist is difficult. If you take it slow and don’t rush your skin and search out evidence based education it is typically less expensive.

Hi there, I'm an esthetician here. I'm glad you went to a dermatologist to address your skin concerns. In the past, personally when I visited numerous dermatologists they never told me how to properly use my actives. A lot of people who use retinol don't know that you need to build your skins tolerance up to it and start off by using it once every 2-3 days at night by only using a pea size amount for the entire face. Most people use a lot and slather it all over their face and also don't follow up the next morning with spf. Some clients I even came across using retinol sometimes don't even wash their face the following morning, which is a must to remove the actives prior to starting your day and stepping outside the house. Another mistake is that people start off with the highest dose they can get which is a big no no. Also, to answer your question about what a toner does is to bring back the skins pH balance which is usually anywhere from 4.5-5.5 Thanks for the video I really enjoyed it! I just love skincare ✨️

THIS. This is exactly what happened with me. I went to the best and one of the most expensive dermatologists only for them to frame an opinion about my skin without even taking a look at it or the reason for the condition. They would just write down something on the paper in 2 minutes and expect you to leave without questions. For nearly 4 years I struggled to understand my skin and why the products never worked on me only to later discover that I was neither diagnosed right or I wasn't explained how the products work. I feel sorry for my 20 year old self. For 2 years I did my research and with trial and error, numerous journals understood my skin and now I'm so sorted.

@@sonalirangnekar unfortunately this seems to be the case with most if not all doctors in India - I've had exactly the same experience with three dermatologists (for an actual medical condition!) as well as a few gynaes. They just think we're idiots and give generic advice without looking at the specific case, or even bothering to listen to us.
@sonalirangnekar

@@simplecoffee I agree. I remember back when I was 20 and I I was almost late for my appointment. As I was telling the dermatologist about my skin condition and that I have extremely dry skin, he looked at my sweating face and told me I have an oily skin type and prescribed me acids accordingly. For the next month it just got worst for me as the products dehydrated my skin COMPLETELY. The appointment after that he tells me "oh you have a dry skin type" while charging me an arm. I just hate how most of the dermatologists out here don't really listen to you and start giving an opinion.

@@sonalirangnekar yep. Been asking for salicylic acid to treat a skin allergy I've been dealing with, but three doctors so far have just looked at me and said "no, you are asking for the wrong ingredient, you need a mild antibiotic instead"...guess what actually worked when I got sick of their bullshit and purchased it myself? Yep, salicylic acid. 🙈

As a Torontonian that uses the subway on a daily basis, HA is an absolute no go. It makes my skin so severely dry and parched. Not enough people know about how HA actually works by taking moisture out of the air... so if there isnt a lot of moisture in the air and you live in a dry climate it wilk be leached from ur skin. I can use it for maybe a few month in the summer.

I'll be 65 in June and I haven't reached the end of my skincare journey because science and cosmetic companies keep discovering and inventing better and better skin care. In my opinion, as revered as that is lol, the earlier the better. I did have acne and so was always always seeking out the latest in skin care for that. Much of what is available now was not available years back. My derms big thing was benzoyl peroxide

I really love Topicals Faded for hyperpigmentation. I also get discolouration post pimple that lasts for MONTHS. I also have a large scar from shingles (I don’t even qualify for the vaccine, yet, so that was extra annoying). And it is really helping to fade the hyperpigmentation. I’m slowly incorporating it and retinol into my routine. It can all become so overwhelming keeping track of when you can use different products. So I have a journal and cheat sheet so I don’t use the wrong things together. Hyaluronic Acid is the most annoying product. It’s in everything which is great if you don’t live in a dry climate. In dry climates it makes skin more dry as it has no air moisture from which to draw. No one ever talks about that and I wish people would stop constantly recommending it without that caveat and I wish companies would stop putting it in everything.

I use Curology at the moment. I started with 0.025 tretinoin mixed with 2 other ingredients-no irritation from using it every night so then moved on to the next highest, again, no irritation so we went to .07 and I changed over to Agency which is the sister of Curology but they send me a dark spot formula also. After doing well for so long, all of a sudden my skin would slough after using the tretinion so I backed down to the 0.05% and still got the sloughing. So they are sending me a bottle of the 0.025 to see if I can tolerate that. This certainly has been a journey. When I started on Curology a year ago, I took the bottle to my dermatologist and told him the price and he said that was an excellent deal. If my skin still sloughs after going back to the lower %, I guess I will make an appt. with my derm. again and see what he has to say. I do have to say that I really love the LaRoche Posay Cicaplast balm for when my skin is not doing well. Thanks for this video. So, I use the same Rx meds you talked about.....the best combo for my skin. I follow up with my daytime moisturizer, which is either my Differin Soothing Moisturizer or Trader Joe's Nourish Oil-Free Antioxidant Facial Moisturizer, and the latter is only 5.99 and it's great! Of course, my sunscreen is either my Elta MD or La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer with SPF. For night, I use the La Roche-Posay Lipikar Balm AP. I'll throw some of Trader Joe's Marula Oil (dupe for Drunk Elephant) under my eyes and call it a day. For someone who lives in dry AF Denver, I think my skin looks pretty good and I'm 57. I like to keep things simple. I don't have time for crazy skincare routines. Plus, I drink a ton of water.

I love Curology. I really couldn’t handle even the lowest standard concentration of tretinoin (0.025%), and Curology was able to give me just 0.005%. While that is a tiny dose and won’t make a difference quickly, it gave me that confidence to actually use it, and now I’m working my way up to a standard dose. I think they start people on low concentrations to ease you into it, but you can get up to higher concentrations. Since my skin is sensitive, and my main concern is hyperpigmentation, it was totally worth it for me to start low and go slow with little to no irritation.

Hyaluronic acid is one I avoid in winter as my skin is just too dry. During the summer I "sandwich" it between a toner and an essence , ie : toner # hyaluronic acid # essence. I do this because HA requires hydration, which it will take from anywhere, including your skin! So, if I am wearing HA and a moisturiser and a sunscreen - the HA cannot get any airborne moisture from the atmosphere as both the moisturiser and the sunscreen act as occlusives, therefore preventing water loss AND water absorption from the air. Give hyaluronic acid a good drink 🍸😉 I'm so happy that you've found a great routine and it works brilliantly. 💗

Online dermatologists are for general info. Each person's skin is unique, like DNA. In addition each person's skin changes due to numerous factors: aging, hormones, climate, seasonal shifts, other medical issues one might have. I'm grateful for my longtime dermatologist educating me on every single step of the skincare. A good dermatologist also has to be aquatinted with one's medical issues and act accordingly. For ex: I had my thyroid gland removed 4 years ago. She had to adjust my skincare routine. Also, both she and my surgeon (endocrinologist) were explicit about botox diminishing the effect of medications I have to take. Heard none of the online dermatologist saying this. Fillers I can. But botox - no! And nothing strange for a make up artist to get into skincare. On the contrary. What's the point of the outside looking good (not that long) when the inside is unhealthy.

❤️❣️I love that FAB toner; very soothing! BUT, I agree about pilling. I was frustrated with all of morning products pilling, no matter the products or number of layers. Then I realized the one constant was that I applied this before getting out of the shower when applying body moisturizer. GAME CHANGER! Now my morning is pilling free, and I use it after double cleanse at night, and tbh that is when I really need the soothing properties ‼️✅

Your skin looks AH-MAZNIG. I've been obsessing over any and all skincare info from derms and Dr. Shereene Idriss explains why hyaluronic acid isn't super hydrating - you aren't crazy! If your skin isn't hydrated enough by hyaluronic acid alone (especially if you're dry already or from your actives), it makes so much sense! Apparently glycerin > hyaluronic acid for hydration, but I'm still figuring this out too and have not consulted a derm, so huge kudos to you for taking that step - your skin is GLOWING

Your skin looks amazing. You are absolutely glowing in such a beautiful way. I've been using curology for 15 months now. I started out at 0.003 percent, and am currently up to 0.14 percent. I use it daily and have seen such great results. I think the key to avoiding the "tretinoin uglies" is to start low and go slow. Good skincare is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes time to rebuild a healthy skin barrier, but is so worth it, and makeup application looks so much better when you start with good skincare.

My skincare consists of Benzac foaming face wash (around $16nzd from memory) and Cetaphil facial moisturizer (around $20nzd) Those two products completely got rid of the acne on my cheeks, jawline and neck. It got so painful it hurt to talk or smile. With Benzac I went from using it twice a day, to once daily and have continued results. Cetaphil has made my pores shrink completely and those black pores (something filaments?) have disappeared. I also had trouble with oily skin and using moisturizer often helped my skin to not overproduce oils. Those two products got me seeing results in a few months of use

i use paula's choice BHA at night, and i use my benzoyl peroxide at night too, switch between them every other day. let me tell you, the two together has saved my stupid AF sensitive combo skin. My skin, reacts to food - so i get weird cystic acne due to food - so the benzoyl peroxide help with that. the BHA just help deep cleanse for other gunk on my face. I use a nicinamide+zinc serum to calm sh*t down and and peptide serum. to help a little to renew the skin, but not as aggressive as a BHA... I am starting a retinol serum soon, because i know it's good. and i will start slow. I use a nice danish sunscreen called Derma, and currently on the hunt for a good night cream. yeah... IF you have the money go to a dermatologist and ALSO, if you're going to listen to anyone on youtube, listen to dermatologists NOT skincare enthusiasts. lol. i personally love Dr shereene idriss she taught me so much as well. including why hyaluronic acid will dry out the skin, because it only sits on the top layer , it does not go all the way deep - and a glycerin based moisturizer is always the winner. ;) gosh i could talk about skincare FOREVER. but it's such a journey and once you have had trauma with your skin you just want to Shout from the mountains when you figure out the right steps for your skin and it actually starts to heal. it's so nice. thanks for a video i personally really loved watching. so glad you finally have the skin you are comfortable in !

I came to youtube with a solid regime of basic products. After watching beauty videos for a year or so, I started changing things up a lot and my skin went downhill pretty bad. I went back to basics and things improved, but using a retinoid was tricky. I think there are so many different kinds of retinoids that figuring them out on your own is tough! Great to see sensible beauty content on here....re healing balms: I had some contact dematitis from a mask and I found at the drugstore a product called exederm which is supposed to prevent psoriosis flare ups and it has some anti-itch medication as well. It is also very thick and hydrating and I can use it in my under eye with no problems, though it's not formulated for that. Just throwing it out there because in addition to aquaphor and cereve healing balms, it's great to have the itch-killing power especially during allergy season...

another really great online source is cassandra bank son's youtube content, she's a licensed aesthetician and explains how products work with your skin on a chemical level really well and in ways that a really easy to understand. as someone who's struggled with their skin their whole life i've found her content really empowering bc it's enabled me to understand how the products i use work and to understand my skin more generally, bc i find that (at least in the uk) derms will explain the very minimum bc they're on the nhs and are so pressed for time, plus she has so many videos it's really easy to find info for exactly what you need :) hope this helps !

Your skin sounds like mine. Super sensitive. I have malabsorption syndrome so, my body doesn't have the vitamins and other nutrients it needs to stay healthy. It is very evident on my skin. It's so hard to cover bright red sores on a pale face...I just don't know how to do it.

Guurl, buliding a good routine is serious business. After trying everything under the sun for cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers, I now know which ingredients work best for my skin. Honestly, I'm done paying $60+ per product and I looked into formulating my own products. Its surprisingly easy and you can get many of the actives/ trendy ingredients/ extracts! I highly recommend making your own products, as it is ecofriendly and cost efficient :)

It's so nice once you figure out your ideal skincare routine. Honestly, I have yet to find my holy grail sunscreen. I'm pretty sensitive to sunscreen whether mineral or chemical (oxybenzone is a BIG no) I use a benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin cream as well and if my sunscreen is too thick or drying, it pills like CRAZY. Currently using the Garnier Nicina-B spf 30 cream which is nice, it's fragrance free but I do find my skin looking a little too oily for my liking so I set with a powder spf, also want a higher spf than 30.

11:46 so you don't use any active around the eyes? I'm assuming you don't put your tretinoin there 😅 but retinol's effects are also good for the skin around the eyes. I think that's the only thing that could actually do something for dark circles (not sure) besides taking care of lines.

@@ilonakalimov3440 aestheticians or estheticians mostly do facials and facial treatments, although I describe them like skin detectives. I am an esthetician and I like to inform my clients of their skin type and conditions as well as asking questions about skincare routine, lifestyle, and diet to learn about causes and recommend better treatment “actives” or services/procedures ex. Microdermabrasion, peels, microneedling, laser treatments, etc. *find a different dermatologist if you can yours sounds like they’re not really helping and addressing your concerns
