How I cleaned a EGR valve on a Toyota D4D 2.2 diesel

For demonstration purposes I show you how I cleaned the carbon out of the egr valve.

A lot of the buildup in egr valves is actually caused by the pcv valve since it brings a bit of oil with it back into the intake and then this oil creates a sticky mess of carbon inside the egr valve so a oil catch can would greatly reduce the buildup in the egr valve

Ive been using mr muscle for dpfs egrs etc from the start of time. They used to have a gel that was even better

How did you get the Mr. Muscle back out of the engine where you put it int

It was put in the egr only so any excess would be burnt off in combustion

@@glchow I googled this, and Carbon Oven cleaners came up on Toyota forums, but also, other commenters provided further info that Mr.Muscle can break down and detiorate the Aluminium itself.

its sounds like an old diesel tractor not like a modern commonrail diesel ? something is wrong , i have a 2.2 d4d with 440.000 km on the odometer , but it sounds much more smooth / silent . maybe its just my imagination

Thanks for watching and commenting. It has always sounded like that. The only other 2.2 d4d I have listened to was in a similar aged Rav 4 and it sounded the same. That was a cold start and it does quieten down when warm, but it is never as refined as a modern diesel.

Hi, did the egr clean help with your starting problems. Mines just started doing it unfortunately, and i agree the car doesnr run as well when it starts badly, blows a bit of smoke

The egr clean has made no difference. A commenter had he cleaned it and fixed it. I was more interested in checking it was working and the condition.

​@@glchowdid my egr valve today, it was really sooted up, to the point you could see no outlet points. Happy to say the car starts first time now

I would take the whole thing off mate. Under the unit was awful

@@kevincarter4163 I’ve seen worse. The car was designed to have it fitted so without have a remap I could do more harm than good. If my memory serves me well the ecu uses the egr at certain engine loads to reduce cylinder pressure. With it blanked of the may be slight increase in power but a increase in fuel consumption? It’s not worth messing with

​@@glchowsorry mate I didn't explain that very well, when I took my egr unit out there's a block it sits on, mine was completely sooted up to the point there was no channels for the gas to go. My actual unit and valve was like yours, not to bad, but under the unit was horrific
