I am not really a begginer, but I do get stuck at the coloring stage rather often, so watching someone else with a similar structure (Separating everything in different layers and playing with the layer types) explain their process is very motivating and helped me complete some illustrations I wasn't sure how to color, so thank you! Comparing our processes I was able to add some steps to my own that I ended up liking a lot.

Use simple brushes when you are a beginner. G pen, water colour brush, air brush, eraser. Multiply + colour burn for shadow. Overlay + colour dodge for highlight. Selection Tools Layer system After finishing base colour, use clipping mask to do the rendering. Tips: Use both soft and hard shadows and try balancing them.

Blending modes can be difficult and you might feel like you need to remember them all but realize blending modes just change the color of things. They are quick color changes rather than manually changing out colors for certain affects aka color picking. Thats the best thing about learning color theory is all the cool art you look up to can be done by simply choosing the right color. IMO the better your color picking skills are the easier it is to paint in general.

I def agree with brushes not mattering, though i think brushes kinda improve your art. It might not help your understanding of anatomy or technical skills but sometimes I feel like a brush that makes the certain texture, shape etc of the lines that you want, will make you want to draw more. Like for me I like more soft round/square or painty brushes so it makes my art enjoyable because I have a specific brush I like

pretty helpful i am at semi old age getting back into drawing i think it was the cybperpunk edgerunners honestly that sparked my intresst in it again tbh been using clip art as well and i had no idea the person used it as well lol. but the color tips are really intressting and straight forward . ive been using ai kinda for the same reason you do for reference but not for stealing since i dont publish it anywhere. it kinda helps to find a style you wanna stray for in a sense.

i use ai as a reference too! im not able to see things in my imagination clearly so ai helps me see what i was imagining more clearly! its never exactly what i want cause ai usually isnt the best but with the visual example im able to actually see what i want to draw in my head! its like a crutch for when my brain isnt working its best. its also helping me learn how to have better composition since thats something i was struggling with learning! for a while i was very frustrated about ai and the things it could create but i decided to use to my advantage as a tool instead! aside from the people abusing it to replace real artists, it can teach us a lot as human artists!

Great tutorial video, would you be able to explain how you choose the values in your colours? I know you mentioned you can check them with a white + colour layer but how do you determine whether it's too light or dark? For me typically I err on the side of too dark because blending will soften up the transitions and pull it back into light but i'd like to hear your thoughts
@niroxious Жыл бұрын
A general tip I could give is training your eyes to see if a value is good or not. to train it, you could look at a bunch of references in black and white and see how they usually look. After looking at enough references, you will develop the instincts to tell good values.

The way you draw face shape + eyes is really good. I'm trying to learn how to draw this shape, but it comes out very triangular and awkward when I do it. I suspect there's a lot of nuance to the way you bend the cheek lines that I'm not understanding yet. Thanks for the tutorial. One thing I don't understand - you apply multiply shadow to the entire piece, and then erase it? Or do you apply multiply but what looks like 'erased multiply' is in fact another blending mode painted over the multiply?

Ik I might sound stupid, but do you have any tips on how to color Grayscales? Every KZbinrs I see all recommends Gradient mapping. But unfortunately for me I'm too young to own a bank account, and my parents won't let me have the premium features for Ibis paint... I always suffer a lot on making it look more natural, or rather more stylized sometimes, it always ends up really radio active. I tried many methods fixing it while making my drawings, I always end up wasting time instead.

so back when i started out drawing all the way back in 2013 i used to study from anime screencaps. they looked great to me at the time but little did i know the anatomy was severely flawed and thats what i saw several years later when i looked back at my old anime reference images. Same thing with the ai images. they might look fine to you now but for one they've got very inconsistent lighting and cant do accurate reflections at all. they often dynt know how to transition between certain fat / muscle insertions on the body etc so be careful when studying from them.

11:00 YOURE SO REAL FOR THIS. While my opinion is not the exact same as yours: what i do like about AI art is the composition, the randomness in details. Ive seen many images where on the shadows, where light isnt supposed to hit, theres light spots and for some reason i like it. It sometimes inspires me, giving me ideas on things i could try drawing and makes me want to take those images to study them and adapt them to my style since i really like it! And the placement of characters with the background... so many details ''perfectly'' made, i want that. While i DO NOT support AI ''artists'', i dont see a problem when using them as references. Of course, i dont really enjoy the idea of art being stolen for these, but theres nothing that anyone can do since its sadly inevitable.
@LindyLinpu2yw Жыл бұрын
I JUST COMMENTED THIS! Except i use ai differently. In procreate I’ll create some color blobs, then run it through an app like AI Mirror and use what it comes up with as reference. Especially if I want to sketch a certain character in a certain pose. I think it’s such an underrated medium to use
