Here’s a time-lapse of me converting my 1997 Chevy Gladiator into a cozy, livable space. It’s a pretty simple build but I’m here to prove that you don’t need to have any experience in building things to make yourself a nice little home in a vehicle. AND you can do it pretty inexpensively as well…
check out my website page where I list all the the supplies I use and give very in depth instructions on how I did the conversion:

PLEASE READ BEFORE DOING YOUR OWN BUILD!!
1. it is important to use grommets where the holes are for the solar panel wires to come into the van so the metal of the roof doesn't cut through the wires protective coat. I didn't use any because i couldn't find any but you can order them online if you can't find any in stores.
2. i do say in the video that i recommend putting fuses between all electrical components. its a long story but in my situation i didn't really have that option.
3. if i had to go back and do one thing more carefully it would be the window covers. If you make ones the same way as mine, try to make them as perfect as possible, and a little bigger than needed. I've found if I leave them up in the morning for a bit and the sun starts to shine on them, they can actually fall out. One of my back ones and one side door one have done that and those were the ones that fit best. If you mess up you can always duct tape more cardboard where needed!
4. The battery I have is actually 'sealed' not 'GEL' as a few commenters have told me.. i tried doing research and its not super clear anywhere which it is but I'm like 90% sure it's sealed so I did change the battery indicator light on the cc.
5. For most, it will be important to strap the battery down. Many people have told me that I should've done that and I see where they're coming from but it's really highly unlikely that even if my van flipped in an accident than it would even go in there, it doesn't have really anywhere to go considering its secured tightly on all the sides and the bed frame extends over it.
6. Like i say in the video, i do know the carbon monoxide is not in the best spot but i did read the manual and according to all the places it said you shouldn't put it, theres literally not a single place in the van that would be ideal.
7. Some people have told me to cover the battery terminals so if something falls on them, nothing bad happens, so I would recommend doing that.
8. Dicor Lap Sealant is a stronger, more reliable caulk to use in place of silicone when it comes to things covering hole in the van like around the fan, panels, and panel cables.
9. Many have told me fiberglass insulation is not good to use in vehicles because it will get moldy from the moisture but the insulation i used was what came in and got ripped out of the van. It had been in there since 1997 with no mold so it seems like it should be fine for a bit longer.
10. All the products I use and show in the video like my fridge and solar panels are listed on my website.

Can we talk about how she did an awesome job on that van with like almost no tools? I saw her use a steak knife to cut insulation, crimped wires with vise grips and used a drill from like 1980. Excellent work. Your parents must be so proud of you.

She did also have a jigsaw, tablesaw, passlode and compressed air. Im very impressed over all but just dont want folk thinkin they can convert their van with their kitchen utensils. Even the sheets of crep paper used for stenciling are quite alot more costly than newspaper. As a tool lover Sum credit should be given to her tool collection.

My cat saw what I did with that rabid possum with my carpenters hammer tonight it was pretty gruesome.... If U put your money into a mobile living space and want sex lighting too make sure it has a shower wood heat fireplace and a place to take a dump not an over night sex machine... I really struggled thru my solar panel edumacation shit. I built a tilt frame on the 3 main panels to harness what I can and it really works swell. Flat panels can be affected by azimuth where ya park the thing and get no light in sun light. A tilt bracket set up is not total wind proof but U can work with it and use clasps to hold the panels that they work where sun light is at kooky angles...

Just wanted to say, I finished watching the video and was like - oh dang I just watched that for 43 minutes straight and didn't even think to click out of it... and I don't even plan on building a van or anything I just loved how real this was! You nailed this video mate, you've made me see how it's anyone and everyone's game building a van - so many videos just show people doing everything perfectly right, but because you show how you had to change things around and backtrack sometimes and even pointed out, for example, closing the rear doors to check the insulation fits - just really well done and clever throughout. Saving this video for a when I start to seriously consider life on the road instead of a house! Thank you!

For the window covers, I'd recommend gluing some aluminum foil onto the cardboard before sliding it into those sleeves. That'd be a super easy/cheap addition that could have a very big impact. You'd wanna try to do it so that the shinier side of the foil is facing outward. That would help block infrared/UV radiation from the sun.

The detail and dedication to getting this on film is as big a deal as the build. You are a working machine. Some of these bozos commenting are jealous as can be because they couldn't stay with a job like that long enough to finish. Watch this and one must ask whats your next challenge? Work like this costs at least as much labor cost as the materials. Hope you got your payday out of this when you sold it.

Pretty impressive. The only thing I saw that might be an issue down the line was running the solar panel wire through the hole on the roof. I'd recommend installing a rubber grommet and then run the wire to prevent chafing the wire with vibration from driving. I was also going to mention having the brake lines checked as they are often overlooked on an older vehicle but you already had them repaired. Good luck with your travels.

Really cool video. Good job. One area where you want to make sure is lasting is where the wires from the solar go through the metal roof. Without a plastic or rubber grommet, over time the movement might cause an issue with the wire insulation rubbing up against the metal. The butyl tape and silicone tape might prevent this, but its something to keep an eye on.

It does my heart good to see a young person (and a girl!) take on such a challenging project that would be tough for even experienced adults and work at it, researching it, learning and adapting, and persevering to the end. Plus she documented her learning and doing in video and detailed written form for others to learn, be inspired, and perhaps to follow. It's good to see a young person build their sense of self and identity through actual trial and accomplishment, and hard work and visible results rather than chasing self-esteem and popularity through doing inane dance moves on TikTok and other social media time black holes. At their core, I think most young people of Anna's age "Could" learn to do these hands-on things -- but they just don't have the parents, other adults, and social environment around them that values and promotes these sorts of things. My hat's off to you, Anna -- and to your parents. As much as you appreciate them now, I know you will only appreciate them more later in life as you look back on this time.

Why does it matter that she’s a grill?
@thebordernow
@thebordernow 4 жыл бұрын
@@HarryBerry316 I've been waiting for this...(frankly, I'm surprised that it has taken more than a week for this obvious question.) It matters that she's a girl because girls still don't get the societal (and peer!) encouragement to pursue many of these hands-on building and maker type of projects. (And I'm not talking about small handcraft type of hobbies.) It usually takes extra effort and support (like from her parents here) to encourage this "equal opportunity" exploration of something a girl might turn out to like and really be good at, that is still somewhat outside the usual gender stereotypes. And much of this societal ostracization is from other female peers (just think of the usual high school and even middle school cliquishness that exists today). So I was just saying that it was great to see a young person - and especially a girl - help break down the age and gender limiting stereotypes and encourage and inspire others like them to explore on their own, that's all.

@@HarryBerry316 You do realize that stereotypes have some element of truth in them, right? Otherwise, they wouldn't continue to exist because people would then dismiss them as patently wrong. So, I was just pointing out what I think is still factual - but not making a judgment about it.

FYI: every van life video i've seen has been WAYYYY excessive both in labor and money. (I have a 2003 Chevy Astro van -- PASSENGER van, so no need for me to line the walls and ceiling and insulate etc. I just removed the back seats! It baffles me how most get a CARGO van, so they have to do all that extra work. I SPENT LESS THAN $100 converting my van into a paradise! MOST people do not need solar, or propane, or running water, or fancy lights, etc etc. That's great if you want 1MPG and to spend all your money on gas and things you don't need. I FEAR THESE VIDEOS make potential nomads think they MUST do all this work, when you actually don't have to do almost any of it! I just plug in a hair-dryer if I want direct heating, ha ha. But I've never needed to! SPREAD THE WORD: anyone can do van life for under $3000. (My van was $1700 used.)

you don't need to do ANY electrical work. (unless you're going to be running loads of stuff, which is not smart. I paid $10 for a power / usb converter to plug into my cigarette lighter. Covers ALL my needs easily! WHY would i need to install solar? Yikes!)

FYI “stuffing as much fiberglass insulation into the doors as possible” actually negatively effects the “R” rating or thermal rating of fiberglass insulation as it looses its efficiency when scrunched or shoved together . It needs to be as fluffy as possible . So putting more inside the doors actually does you worse. Better off going with a closed foam spray which is water proof, bacteria resistant , and has a MUCH GREATER “R” rating for the space . But I’ll end this with - YOU ROCK! What a great achievement this must be! I have wanted to do this for awhile now too!
