This is why your chessable courses are good - you're a born teacher and a scientist to boot. 300 positions is good value. Appetite for your upcoming blunders course is whetted!

Great work, sir! Position 1 was highly instructive! I haven't watched the others. Thank you for actually putting in all the extra effort to make clean puzzles with one clear solution that don't come with an exponentially increasing move tree of obfuscation. Then lying by omission (like so many other content creators do) by pretending that it doesn't exist. Then lying again about how straightforward and instructive the puzzle is. To me you seem like a man of integrity who goes the extra length to make high-quality content. Definitely makes me want to buy your Blunder Check course when it gets published.

Your words mean a lot to me. In this day and age, I think working to improve the quality of the puzzles for best learning outcomes should be the responsibility of chess authors. We can still make a difference as humans in this realm.

Because of Dr Can all of us are running around using phrases like "orientation phase", "cognitive overload", "confirmation bias", and "Einstellung effect".... Better than the usual chess terminology ("Knight takes pawn"), right folks? 😮

An unique video about the creating of teaching materials! I knew that good material takes time to create. Still, i underestimated the time to tweak a position after finding it. And great to hear from Dan Heisman again 😀 So, the deletion aspect is important in creating insightful puzzles. And that's how I sometimes try to get chess principles even more into my head. If I found the right solution for a puzzle, then I try to think how the principle in that position wouldn't work anymore by changing one piece for example. This way I try to extract the essence, getting the depth of what's really going on. (And that doesn't work every time of course.) The effort and time you put in is a lot. And sometimes a puzzle can be solved in 10 seconds for example. It might seem that for just 10 seconds you wasted 30/60/120 minutes or something. But I imagine an fictional situation of just 1000 people doing that puzzle. That takes people almost 3 hours in total, IF they would be that quick and if it were just 1000 people. In other words: the effort and time you spend is well worth for so many people! I hope you keep on creating learning materials for us for ever! 💪

This was very interesting! I solved position 2 and 3 but in the first position I didn't spot the knight as a potential problem at all. I just thought it was weird that someone wouldn't take with the queen in that situation so I knew it had to be Kxd2 based on that. But I thought the puzzle had something to do with the queen coming to a5, and I excluded the knight as having anything to do with that when I saw that it was defended. Very interesting. Crazy how a knight can just get trapped like that in the center of the board, you'd normally think they're good there
@Dr.CansClinic
@Dr.CansClinic 14 күн бұрын
Thank you so much! Yes, that is a counterintuitive pattern. The knight on e5 looked very strong indeed. It takes a good eye to see that piece as potentially trappable.

In Nimzo Indian Defense/Queen's Indian Defense the move d5 by Black feels to me like a space taking and square controlling move rather than a break move (Dan Heisman's vocabulary). What is your opinion on this?

That thumbnail really freaks me out. I count sixteen arrows and yet none of them are legal moves getting out of the check. Also, a Knight can apparently move horizontally now.

That represents the chaos! Honestly, I don't spend too much time on the thumbnails and let the designer create it. Perhaps I should!
@MarkPersoonlijk
@MarkPersoonlijk Ай бұрын
Hahaha, usually I don't study the thumbnails. But because of your comment I did. Yeah, amazing all those arrows! But I think these arrows are exactly communicating the essence of the video. Dr. Can needs to see if one pawn or piece needs to relocated to get the puzzle clean and exactly to the point 😀

7:12 Puzzle 2. The non-tweaked version. This is exactly what I struggle with. I tried to solve it on my own and I incorrectly jumped to the conclusion that bxc4 was clearly correct for the same reasons mentioned in the video. Puzzles like this take you way too deep down the rabbit hole. Then the brain freezes up. No more RAM. Cognitive overload. To me, it looks like academic dishonesty to tout such puzzles as suitable for beginner to intermediate level players.
