I've been cutting my hair for so long I forgot to mention the reason why I started cutting it myself, which was that I simply found a lot of stylists didn't know how to cut my hair type (very straight and wiry.)

rosie2112 haha thank you! I used to cut my hair a lot when I had short hair. It’s a lot more intimidating with longer hair to me for some reason.

Pretty sure it's not that rude, they could easily say she looks ugly with short hair but that's not the case. They just think she'd look prettier with long hair because they don't see her with it.
@Weirder_the_better6 жыл бұрын
Stiles Kuchiki it’s just difference of opinion, I guess. It’s one thing to say long hair would look interesting, or to ask if she’s ever had longer hair. I personally think it’s a bit rude to tell someone they should change their appearance to look more attractive. Especially for something as subjective as preferred hair length.

*I used to cut my own hair for years!* People were always impressed with how put together it seemed for just chopping it myself, but it really wasn't too hard, since I just keep it straight and shoulder-length. I remember Emmy saying early on she cut her own hair and I have been waiting for this video for years! I'm a hairstylist and I think Emmy does a great job. Holding the shears with your ring finger and pinky on the tang is the proper way! For her hair texture and how she styles it, she can benefit from the choppy texture. Home haircuts won't work for everyone, but if you can make it work for you, and like what you get, go for it! Go Emmy!

Thank you for this, and for your words of wisdom ❤ for years my depression manifested in not looking after myself, and my hair suffered. I had thick dreadlocks at the back that I hid by having my hair tied up 24/7, and suffered from migraines because of them. I was terrified to go to a professional, and heck, was terrified to even tell my loved ones how bad it had gotten. A year ago I grabbed a pair of scissors and took control of my own hair. Now have a very similar style to you. I love the freedom.

What you said about taking ownership of your own head really resonated with me. Last September, after a couple of decades of dealing with a receding hairline and periodically letting my hair grow too long out of laziness, I finally shaved my head and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made, so much less stress. Although, I may have to look into that sunscreen you mentioned. While it's been cold, I've been able to get away with wearing a beanie whenever I go out, but that's not going to work too well in the middle of the summer. "💇🏻♀️

I totally agree with your philosophy on hair! I love your hair and I can’t believe people say you should grow it out long. It fits your personality. As you can tell from my picture, I do what I want with my hair too! My husband doesn’t get a vote! It is a huge pet peeve of mine when I hear women say that they’d love to cut their hair but their husbands like it long! It is YOUR hair, not your husbands and long hair doesn’t always look good on everyone, especially as you age. I am 47 and have a pink pixie cut and it makes me happy! I get so many nice complements from strangers about how they love my hair, and wish they had the courage to do something like this. It’s hair. Do it. If you don’t like it, it can always be dyed back, fade or grow. Own your style, own your hair! Hallelujah Emmy!

I think it's unfortunate that some women (and men too) choose not to have the hair they want because of what their partners likes. I understand give and take and compromise, but I feel that should never include what you do with your own body. You can never be fully happy with how you look because you are always limiting yourself to someone else's preferences. My partner wouldn't get a vote either. I would let them know beforehand that I plan on changing my hair, so that they can prepare for the new look, but that's all.

I think the message of this video is so wonderful. I was definitely brought up with the idea that I wouldn't be the most beautiful version of myself without my long hair, and for years, it stopped me from cutting it. Even though having to care for long hair took up *so* much of my time and money, and made me feel really unhappy. The happiest moments were when I taught myself intricate braiding styles, and I could braid it all on top of my head and have it neat and out of the way. Eventually I found the courage to have it cut - but I had a hard time finding a hair dresser willing to go from waist length to shoulder length. They kept telling me over and over that I would regret my decision. That made me feel like I was making a big mistake, and again, that I wouldn't be the most beautiful version of myself without my blanket of hair. So I got an asymmetrical cut which was still really long, and walked out of the barber's feeling so unhappy. It made me feel like, maybe I should just give up and accept my place in life. Women have long hair, or fail to have long hair. In the following years, it became the longest it had been so far, because I couldn't bring myself to go to the hairdresser's again. And I started getting more and more depressed about caring for my hair, and so one day just asked my husband to chop it all off. He was extremely hesitant and went slow, but with every inch that feel away, I felt physically lighter. And most importantly - realized I *did* look cute with my hair at any length! Since then, I've had it in all sorts of short styles, even shaved to a couple of millimeters. I've never been happier with my hair! 😊 So thank you for sharing such a wise stance on hair, Emmy. I think it's such an important message for young women.

Emmy, I absolutely LOVE your hair and your reasons for cutting it yourself, and having it short. I also cut my own hair for the same reasons. I used to keep my hair quite long because that's how my husband and five sons and mother liked it, but one day about six years ago, I started to think about how I might actually like my hair, and it's been no longer than shoulder length ever since. Most often, it's in a pixie cut, because that's what I like best. Though my husband and sons tell me they wish I would grow it out again, I gently tell them the same thing you say, "It's MY hair and I should be the one to like it no matter what." By the way, one of your best features are your lovely "big lips" and I find your looks and most of all your personality absolutely enchanting! Blessings - Crystal

I think it's rude for people to make such personal comments. I'm glad that their comments don't seem to phase you. And, the fact that you know what you like makes all the difference. It really depressed me. After seeing this tutorial, for the first time in November 2018, it gave me the courage to cut my hair. It's now similar to your hairstyle - can't be exactly the same because I have baby fine hair. So, I now have sticky-outie hair (gotta love the technical term) and love it! I love this! I also love how you encourage taking control of your own hair. I use my hair like therapy. I even have a little joke-song I sing to the tune of If You're Happy & You Know It that goes, "If your life is in the pooper, cut your hair. If your life is a dumpster, cut your hair. If your life is looking scary, the solution is less hairy. When your life is in the pooper, cut your hair." Stupid, I know. But it really does help because it's an instant change. Makes me feel like I'm doing something positive by just changing something about myself for, what I hope is, the better. It's been, like, the most horrible 8 or 9 months of my life, so I chopped all my hair off into a pixie cut. I haven't done that in years. It was like cutting off all the awfulness of the past and leaving it on the floor. I feel like a new person.

I think hair is a big liberating outlet. Dye it, cut it, grow it, braid it, curl it, straighten it, you can do whatever you please. My hair was very long, very blonde very thick, and very wavy when I was younger. But, I didn't like it. I found it tedious to take care of, it tangled super easily, and I didn't enjoy taking care of it. So I kept slowly going shorter until I took the leap and got a pixie cut. And I fell in love with it. My front layers stayed long so I still had a pretty little wave of bangs, and it was MUCH easier to care for. And when I took the leap and started bleaching and dyeing it, I felt so much more confident. I was always a quiet, shy girl growing up, but I felt more confident to be my weird, quirky, goofy self with such bright stand-out hair. The possibilities are practically endless, and I think that's the most beautiful thing about it.

I’m a professional hairstylist and the way you hold your shears is actually the proper way! Good job Emmy!

Actually, I think that the short hair compliments your face better than long hair would. Not that it matters. Everyone should do what they want.

I cut my own hair too. I have thick, coarse, frizzy, slightly wavy Asian hair and kids told me it was like horse hair growing up. It did make me a bit self conscious but I'm trying to learn to love my hair! I love your positivity so much!

I cut my own hair all the time. The weird thing is how empowered you feel after ...good or bad.

You do don't you! I cut and dye mine myself and feel super happy no matter what the outcome is!

I've been cutting my own hair for the past couple years as well. It is awesome to have creative freedom over your own hair! You are seriously so cool.

Emmy, your hair suits you beautifully! I do take pride in my long hair, but I have been trimming it myself for the last 5 years or so. People always look at me like I'm a lunatic when I say that, but I'm just not that comfortable in the hands of a hairdresser. People should just have the hair that makes them feel like their best self. Maybe other folks make stylistic choices I wouldn't make myself, but I applaud their adventurous spirit ❤️ I feel like Jenna Marbles would be proud✂️

Emmy, thank you SO much for this video! I've been asking my husband for years to cut mine, and always he was too nervous. It only took watching you cut your own hair to get him to finally agree!! All it took was realizing, "hair is just hair, and it will grow back."
