How I'd Make a Super Mario Bros Movie

A sort of documentary/storyboard discussion on how I'd go about making an animated Super Mario Bros. movie. Typically sounds like a bad idea, but what if we can make it work somehow?
A sort of series debut for potentially bad ideas and trying to make them work.

I'd have Mario be the working man, an average Joe who's just trying to make a living. Luigi, being young, wishes for adventure yet isn't confident enough to seek it. Through the efforts of both of them (accidentally) they'll end up in the Mushroom Kingdom where Mario and Luigi step out of their comfort zones to become something greater than what they once were

I always thought it would be cool to focus on Mario and Luigi’s relationship. I always thought that in the mushroom kingdom, Mario would thrive on the adventure while Luigi lives in his shadow. But in the real world, Luigi would thrive on security, while Mario would live in his shadow. Could set up some conflict between the two that would be interesting to see

While I'm worried Hollywood might mess it up, I'm hoping Nintendo will watch their franchise very carefully and make sure it's not an abomination. However I think my tastes will be spoiled now from watching this, because honestly I don't know if I could imagine a better story. Excellent structure, interesting story, nice coverage of the series, and the drawings painted each scene perfectly. Kudos man, this was a treat to watch!

This is honestly great. I love the focus on Mario and Luigi’s Brothership and the transitions between the games at the start. Honestly a cool way to tie Mario’s appearances together.

My version of the movie wouldn’t be an origin story, it would start out in the established mushroom kingdom where Mario and Luigi have been going on adventures for years, although maybe there could be a brief backstory in the opening.

Yes! I held my breath when Mario fell in the lava! I had so many feels and then he ends up being okay and they battle Bowser together! Just this is beautiful 😍👏👏👏 Brava!!!

That my friend was a beautiful premise. I love how the focus is mostly on Luigi as he one of the only characters that get any sort of character development in the series anyways. lol Here's hoping Illumination sees this video and takes some notes. (Though, knowing them, they're probably gonna add some funny haha pop culture humor and other stuff that might not make sense on top of that.)

I agree as well, I hope Illumination doesn't screw this up like with overused humor like Despicable Me or bad scriptwriting like The Secret Life of Pets. Let's hope it gets better than the trilogy.

... I don't how I only just found this but a few edits I'd make. One, it would be much more comedic and I'd add in the Koopalings, I'm sure they can fit in somewhere. Two, Mario and Luigi speak full sentences.

Maybe Yoshi and Toad could be in some subplot and meets up with Mario and Luigi at the end and Junior Bowser and the koopalings would be a part of that subplot bringing some comedy.

Excellent concept and execution. I enjoyed that. Suggestion though: watch the volume levels of your music as they tend to drown out your narration. Use volume level automation if your video editing software has it, or slice your music tracks at the start of every voice over and drag the volume of each clip down so you're always heard clearly. ;) Subscribed!

@@VladyO I actually came up with my own draft for "Super Mario Bros." though my draft would've been animated by Walt Disney Animation Studios. My version is more of a fantasy road trip.

@@VladyO That and my version of Peach would've been voiced by Jodi Benson, aka Ariel from Disney's "The Little Mermaid", and Bowser in my draft would be refered to as King Bowser Koopa The Second. I know i'm super late on this, but a nice homage to the format Wallace and Gromit used (more so the latter character); Hell even Illumination once did something like this in...........Minions Guess we'll have to wait and see how bad Crhis Pratt Mario can be throughout the year; With the voicecast out of the way, let's hope Illumination *doesn't* pull a Sonic 2019, since this is a animation studio we're talking about

My Mario movie would be anime filled with epic fight scenes. Ill also make an anime series with storylines from all games, the platformers and the RPGS and a Luigis Mansion saga where it tells the story of how Mario really got captured. I'll have episodes of them kart racing but have it with teams, Mario and Bowser made a deal and challenged each other to a kart race and everyone else joined in, its Marios team vs Bowsers team and if Marios team wins he saved the Kingdom if Bowsers team wins, he gets to take over the kingdom. Ill also have all the music from the games and interduce new character's each saga, I like the saga idea cause of how DBZ do their series I'll do Marios in the form of that. I'll have the Yoshi saga first were it shows full episodes based on Yoshi's adventure saving Mario as a baby in Yoshi's Island. Then I'll have the Kong saga introducing Donkey Kongs group and have Donkey Kong fighting Mario, epic scenes where Mario is working as a carpenter and Donkey Kong is throwing barrels at Mario and Mario is using his acrobatic skills to jump over them and uses his hammer to smash them and have an epic boss fight from the Mario VS Donkey Kong games where Mario picks up DKs barrels and throws them back at him knocking him of the construction site building falling to his defeat. Then I'll have the third saga based off of the four classic Super Mario games. Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. 2 Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World and in this saga ill interduce some classic characters like the shy guys, Wart, Mouser, the hammer bros, the boomerang bros, the angry sun, thowmps, Boom Boom, dry bones, and of course the koopalings. The fourth saga would be based on Super Mario Land 1 and Super Mario land 2 and that's when I of course interduce Daisy and Wario and Otunga the alien Mario fought at the end of Super Mario Land 1 and the fight scene would be recreated and epic and there would also be an epic fight scene between Mario and Wario Goku and Vegeta style. I have a lot more and when I have the time ill post more of my ideas.

I like you, but not this video. Good parts: 3 Acts, Mario's kindness, some Luigi. The bad: LOW depth? How DK shows? Pauline? Luigi no moustache? Mario resolves with a fam business? Peach says you're chosen? Games Montage? Pow pow Bowser dies? I know it's compressed, but a movie, not a tv episode. Good writing doesn't connect dots just for the sake of it, it connects dots well. This is not deeper than an Illumination movie. You can do better!

Dude, you know this ia just a foundation right. All the problems mentioned are the things anyone at a board would know are figured out next in the process. It doesnt make it bad, other than the why DK is their. That I do have to say ais a bit random. Especially considering there in the normal world i guess?

I disagree on Mario being static. I think both he and his brother need character development. Maybe Mario hides a sad background and insecurities behind his brave persona. Maybe he and Luigi could turn out to not be so different from each other, just that Mario keeps it hidden up until some drastic moment forces it out, much to Luigi’s shock. Also, they should talk in complete sentences.
