Being child of the 90's I was very impressed by this Escort and the rear spoiler. My father had a lot car magazines and often I was watching the pictures and this car just stood out away from the others. It is sad that the accountants determined the final look, but you sir, have to remember that the impact on one kid was big. Huge respect for you sir, who created the perfect symbiosis between visual impact, beautiful shape and functional.

When i was young i remember going to a rally stage with my dad... when i was here there were plenty subarus and lancer evos but the one car that brought my attention was the escort. I could only get so close to see it from the back and oh my what a sight. That spoiler made the car what it is and it fascinated me. That was about 15 years ago. Ever since I not only loved the car, i became interested in cars in general. Seeing the entire process of how this design came to be is mindblowing. You drew my passion.

Nice to discover this great series. I just happily subscribed. I used to have a Merkur XR4Ti, which was the Americanized version of this Cosworth. It had the same wing and body as the production Ford Cosworth, but a different engine. I babied that car, kept it for almost 20 years, and made sure it was 100% stock. There were some design issues, but not Frank Stephenson's fault. Like the A/C return was routed right over the hot turbo. But I kept it perfect and used only OEM parts, to keep it 100% as from the factory. I used to get compliments both about how it looked and how it ran. Little kids would say, "what a cool car." And driving it on mountain roads, where the nice handling and turbo torque kept the power coming, was amazing. But my wife thought it was ugly. So in spite of it running as good as new, I sold it for almost nothing. I now have a Honda S2000 as my fun car. I'm not complaining, but still wish I could race up a winding road in that Merkur, with that nice rear downforce.

The interesting thing is, when he says that they chose the Escort platform, is that they didn't. The Escort Cosworth is a Sierra Cosworth floorpan with a modified Escort body on top of it. The front-end body panels aren't interchangeable with a standard Escort because they're longer, to accommodate the Sierra platform's inline engine.

He was just out if college , no way did he design this car entirely, part of the design team yes but that's it. As you said this entire car is based on the Sierra, wing included. the Sierra Cos wing was making that car a true legend and after the Escort done much more in designs added wide fenders etc and the higher rear wing making the car even look better but personally I couldn't like 3 spoilers one. sierra was the king of rwd and the escort has the 4x4 and worlds best shape.
@MartinKusimo3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I think the two-tier spoiler looks much better than the three-tier idea. The Cosworth Escort as it is, is a beautiful thing and that's why we are here :) Of course, you also get more rear visibility this way for the road purposes of this vehicle. So yeah, a good trade-off in the end.

Frank, I was (am) an American designer in Dunton/Merkenich in 1990. I was working with Ian and the gang, Paul Campbell, Gert, Manfred etc . I don't remember you being there. I don't remember you at all. Were you in Koln? I remember that spoiler being done at Dunton. Ed Golden and I think Scot Strong were at Merkenich at that time(?) Gert was back and forth. The Cosworth wing must have been tested in the Merkenich tunnel. I spent a lot of time there. Peter was running the tunnel. I was working on the Escort. A young designer at Dunton (can't remember his name) worked on that wing in Dunton - the kid lived in Maldon Essex. Maybe it came over from Merkenich and he was refining it but I do remember laughing at him for how big it was. Steve Sikes worked on it too.

Weird that no-one at Ford saw the possibility to sell the third wing as an extra after market option - with the Rally success and general hype of the Cossie, money could be made. Well, at least Wheeler Dealers got it right - it sure looked great with the intended look!

I liked those deep 5 spoke alloy wheels that they had, some people put them on their sierra cosworths. I also liked that bluey greeny mustard body colour on the Escort Cossie. The escort cossie was a great car with its whale tail. I think design wise, the ford escort looked the same after the mk2 albeit rounder panels until the radical focus shape. The mk3 rs 2000 and the rs turbo were my favorites. The mk3 XR3i was another. The escort mk3 convertible in blue was also another great car. The mk4 was a lot of people's favourite with its rs turbo versions. The escorts competition was the vw golf which of course is still in production today which the same cannot be said about the escort. I always wondered why Ford ditched the escort in favour for the focus and kept the fiesta models till this day.
