Same here, i never change my copper washer but Mercedes recommend it. I also never change my Toyota 2AR-FE washer. The washer gets stuck in oil pan as always !

I’ve never changed them, never had a problem. Very basic DIYer myself, but only “crush” washer I’ve seen is the one on my motorcycle, which I’ve replaced for a car aluminum washer, and I’ve re-used that crushed crush washer and still no leaks.

I change every time. Really because I was told that's what you are supposed to do. I can't imagine a crush washer not being effective at creating a seal anymore after just 1 oil change interval, but they are inexpensive so I always do it anyway.

I topped my diff oil up the other day and noticed that it’s leaking after I reused the washer. I assume there’s pressure in the diff box. Will find the torque specs and try that, as clearly an up up wasn’t good enough.

My crush washer is a rubber seal. I read that you are supposed to wait till it flattens flush with, or under the back of the drain bolt's level to replace it.

Wow. Never heard of rubber crush washers. Just curious, what car?

@DIYAutoworksNG Yes, I think so. Only has around 9,500 miles on it. I use Super Tech 5W-30 synthetic instead of the 5W-20 it recommends. That, combined with turning off the start-stop every time I start it, the fuel dilution has stopped. Excellent traction. Better AWD than others in its class segment. I'm a single small guy, so I don't need large vehicles. Next year when the warm months come back, I will try 10W-30, then back to 5W-30 before winter. It's fun changing my own oil.

had an acura for several years that i never changed the washer, and it never leaked. otoh, we replaced brake calipers on a friend's silverado, we re-used one because it was missing from the new part, and that leaked immediately. now i'm in a 4runner that just didn't have one (though i guess the last person to change the oil put the plug back in w/ an impact wrench, because i almost broke my wrist getting it out), so i went and bought a pack of them, and i don't know what i'm going to do at the next oil change. probably replace it, since i still have a spare from the last time, or maybe not, since they've got some rubbery coat on them, and i'm not even sure how much the washer deformed underneath that. i guess assess damage and make a snap decision then
@DIYAutoworksNG8 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing those experiences! On brakes, I'll probably make an exception giving how critical stopping is. Yea, loads of people here never replace. Wow on that overtorqued drain bolt. I think your plan makes the most sense; reassess when you get the drain bolt off.

No! I've done two changes and used the same washer. My break in 1000 mile change and my 3500 change, same crush washer, no leakage. Mine is actually stuck to the pan, I figure thats the side that molds/crushes to fit the non flat surface of the pan, so why pull it off if it's seated so well.
@DIYAutoworksNG8 ай бұрын
Lols at "why pull it out if it sits so well" 😅 Before I changed that 100k washer, I actually wondered if it would start leaking after I put in the new one. Don't change a winning team vibes. Lol
@donniev81818 ай бұрын
@DIYAutoworksNG yeah they say the pan his minor imperfections and is not perfectly flat and the crush washer molds to those imperfections, making a tight seal. The drain plug is flat, oh well, I guess only time will tell.

I change it every time. Both on my honda and my toyota. It just isnt worth risking it for the miniscule cost of the washers.

You got me at "politically correct". I've noticed that one has to loosen the drain bolt almost to the last thread at the tip before the oil starts leaking past it. At this point, I'm thinking since the oil in the pan isn't really pressurised, that the whole point behind tightening the bolt as well as the crush washer thing is redundant safety.
@DIYAutoworksNG8 ай бұрын
Lols on politically correct. I actually wondered whether the bolt you start leaking if I changed the old veteran. Lols. You probably have a point on redundant safety. Though in an engine with significant blow-by and PCV clogging, the pressure should increase though. Someone here, said they never changed theirs in 10 years 😂
