Ironically, I was in an awful art slump while I was working on this video (How fitting that it was during a tutorial video HAHA) so this was supposed to be finished weeks ago, but I was struggling like crazy to be happy with anything I drew. I'm feeling much better now luckily ^^ It happens to all of us, and while I still need to teach myself not to feel guilty when I have a few days off to recollect myself, I'm very grateful that my audience is always reminding me that it's okay to take a little longer if I need to T___T Thank you!!

Hi Emily! Thank you so so so so so much for making this. I actually use your drawings as inspiration, and I love your videos so much. I remember that video that you made about you being a teacher, and you met a couple of kids who drew a lot. I actually wanted to use you as inspiration because of your amazing drawing skills. Ever since I discovered your channel, I thought I discovered a whole new world of drawing. Now, before I found your channel I always criticized my own drawings. Because my friends would draw so much better. Here are some of the stuff they would say “How about drawing the eyes the normal way?” Or “Ha, i’am so much more better.” It really hurt my feelings, because sometimes, my friends would call me “Crybaby” because I cry so much. And my parents would be embarrassed by telling me to. It just hurts… but drawing feels like therapy, it makes me feel so.. happy! Of course, I still compare. But, I draw as good as I can.

Some extra tips that I've heard: 1. Looking up references of actual human faces also helps if you wanna work on where everything is placed and how different parts of the face react to each other. 2. If you have an idea specific way a character looks, make style guide and take notes on how you want everything to look. This helps with keeping everything consistent.

The most important thing about good characters for me is knowing how they’d react in different situations, having their personalities planned out completely, but having them drastically differ from that in high stakes situations. A good example is Brooklyn nine-nine when sweet bubbly Jake turned stern and forceful when Rosa was found to be in a shootout. His personality was planned out, but when he was in a high stake situation, he differed from it completely, turning from a happy jokester to a stern cop, that’s why I love the show so much, they know how to write good characters

I am especially impressed with the points about re-using the eyebrows for more expressions, as well as the point about characters with different personalities expressing their emotions differently. Stuff I never see other how-tos touch on.

It was really useful to see emotional expression "decoded" like that. Now i have several points of reference to keep track of emotions when looking at art (eye shape, eyebrows, etc.), rather than just seeing "happy goofball" or "sad stoic". I haven't really done drawing since primary school. This video may give me the confidence to take it up again. :)

We need more of these, this has actually been really helpful. I recently took an interest in drawing and I've always struggled with two things: facial expression and hair.
@lindseybrant7624 Жыл бұрын
Yes those are both hard to draw And I mainly draw Splatoon characters and their hair is VERY hard (except maybe the regular inkling girl, regular octoling girl and regular inkling boy hair, those are pretty easy haha)

@FeyRanger2 жыл бұрын
Something you said in this video is honestly one of the biggest things that I dont see a lot of artists really say and that's the whole "look at how other sets of media does theirs" most of how I figured out art was due to me seeing one of my favorite artists making something neat and I go "damn I really like how they draw eyes" or "wow the way they can draw expressions" and try to mimic it. I know copying 1:1 ain't cool but trying to mimic in your own way is a neat thing to try and do to learn how to do so in your own way.

My problem with art is I’m to impatient, like I will draw every thing in one go, body Then hair then clothes? Heck no, HAIR FIRST BABY, THEN FACE THEN NECK THEn SHIRT THEN HANDS THEN PANTS THEN SHOES THEN COLOR THEN SHADOW
@bunxsx4753 жыл бұрын
Wait, is it bad that I actually draw the body out first then, face, hair, then clothes?… I feel like that’s okay for a sketch. For me, doing that helps me figure out what I’m gonna do next or what I should change.
