How I FINALLY Learned Front Hops!

Front Hops and how to do them. I'm going to teach you everything I know.
This trick was twenty years in the making - not because front hops are particularly hard, but because I decided that I couldn’t do them and convinced myself that I didn’t need them.
This year, my New Years resolution was to finally get over it and learn the trick. Twenty years of half-hearted attempts to get it had failed me, and I was going to do whatever it took to get the job done.
I had watched ‪@TheUselessTrials‬ front hop segment so many times, and it just wasn’t clicking for me. It wasn’t until I committed fully and spent full sessions focused on finding the balance point that it finally started to click.
The other thing that got in the way was instantly trying to learn the front hop 360 right away. I wasn’t giving enough credit to the proper front hop and spending enough time getting that balance point locked in. I just went for it every time, and that wasn’t helping matters either.
So in this video, I broke down fifteen of my best tips - and they are broken into three parts:
0:00 The Foundation
1:47 Front Hop Basics
6:28 Details + Technique
11:46 Trick Tweaks + 360 Hop
As promised, here are the two videos I referenced here:

Hey, I did front hop 360 last night for the first time! It was such a good feeling of accomplishment! Then I woke up. In all seriousness, I am nowhere near the ability to front hop a 360. This video is a lot about learning how to learn. It was helpful to me in that aspect.

This one was a battle for sure - I had it as my resolution at the beginning of last year, and it took ages to finally get my mindset right to buckle down and learn it. Hope this video is helpful for you, too!

One of your best, really well done. Of course the true test will be whether I manage to learn front hops by following the advice, but a lot of that is on me now! And thanks for the shout out, glad you got something out of the push ups (apart from the guns).

I too struggled with this forever. I’m still not great at them but I can get nine or 10 pretty consistently. The thing I realize that I tend to do is start to straighten my legs out which starts pushing my rear wheel down towards the ground. Like you said your hips and legs are kind of a long for the ride and that’s where my legs start to extend unbeknownst to me. Great tutorial and I will have to apply some of these tips next time I get out on my bike.

Thanks so much! I really expected to feel like I would have more control with my legs on this move - maybe that comes in time? Only one way to find out!

I knew I wasn't pulling myself over handlebars enough. Only once I was actually over the balance but instead of bailing my feet I released break and push on wheel forward. Gotta try to pull it underneath me instead thanks for that tip.

Amazing work! you really explain perfectly well I don’t think any other trials KZbinr Is able to explain as well as you do. I would really love you to make a video of an bunny hop up to front, I know Ali Clarkson has a tutorial and so does a few other trial riders but I think your explanation and perspective on this move would be very interesting.

Killer vid. I have been working on these too, and it's a glacially slow progression for me. I should have them down by Halloween 2022. I wasn't getting steep enough, so I use a mental trick-- I imagine that my head tube is parallel with the ground. It's helped. Also, yes, as Aaron points out, scoop your feet and pressure the pedals up and back. This'll keep the rear high and the bike steep enough to continue the trick.

Very helpful video, thanks!!! I struggled with this for quite some time. For a long time i could only do 3-4 hops until falling back down. Then i asked Ali Clarkson about it. He wrote back "If you're not occasionally going over the bars then you're not going steep enough." That helped a lot because i then also really lost the fear of leaning too far and setting my feet down...

First of all your channel is my number 1 go to for how-tos. have joined your twitch a couple times as well. great stuff! I need an advice though.. I got problems over kicking when Im at the edge. this has been my biggest drag eversince i started gapping on ledges a few months ago. At first I thought my 18-15 gearing(170mm cranks/ 26" stock bike) was too soft that's why i overkick during takeoff. I changed to 18-14 gearing and it didnt help at all. I can lower my front end as much as i want on preload but that makes it so difficult for me to avoid over ratcheting my crank back a few clicks. And then as i pull the front end on takeoff it becomes next to impossible not to fall off the ledge midway during the takeoff where i put all my strength on the pedal while on a jump impulse at the same time. What can I do to make this better?

Hi! It sounds to me like your body position might be a little farther forward than it needs to be. When you're on the back wheel, can you look down and see the rear hub? That would be the correct body position, and should help. I posted a new gap tutorial video a few weeks ago that has some extra tips as well. I would also suggest joining our Discord channel, there's a section in there where we share videos of our technique and the whole crew helps analyze your stuff. Here's the link to that: discord.gg/NsWguDRh
