How I Finally Stopped Rounding (horizontal shoulder collapse)

I finally figured out how to stop rounding! Also called "horizontal shoulder collapse", this issue is caused by the upper arm collapsing against the shoulder joint of the throwing arm. The solution to my problem turned out to be far more simple than I imagined. And the cue to make a change was surprisingly effective.
Typically you want to “keep the shoulder at 90 degrees” but throughout the swing, that angle will become much wider as the disc travels from the "power pocket", through release of the disc. In my case there was a timing element of reaching back too quickly, followed by a lack of control during the swing.

Dude! Thanks so much for the kind words at 8:00, very happy to help! I am going to learn from your learning here: I think your core idea of 'slow down enough that you can control the arm' is really what alot of people are missing. Glad you got to this break through and thanks for sharing it with us!

Thank you so much, Owen! Yeah I think I personally got too obsessed with everything else that I overlooked the obvious. If the arm isn't in control, then I need to rethink what I'm doing with it. My cue has worked with 1 person so far. I plan to try it with others just to see what they can do with it.

@@NickCarroll 100% We all get drug into the weeds a bit. Its really good to come back to super simple basic cues, like 'control your arm'. Interesting that more bicep activation was what did it. I would have never cued that, but I will add that idea to the tool box now! Thanks again!

@@_TDG It might be more important in the backswing, and the early part of the swing. I haven't really had a lot of time to experiment over the week. I should have more thoughts by Sunday night.

Great work figuring out rounding. It’s something I still catch myself doing at times but this video certainly helps 👍

Nick….great video. I struggle to control my arm in the backhand as well. I have never been able to visualize and actualize a controlled arm movement. Makes sense to me. Thank you for the video.

yeah man, basically go as slow as you need to in order to get that swing right, then slowly increase speed. Practice with short upshots, and look at your arm the whole time at first. Just to make sure it's doing what you want. I think it's worth it to go back to the basics, and then rebuild on top of better form.

watching Paul McBeth you will notice that he has a real good "knee bend" and he is on his toes and not being flat footed. I just hit 275 feet two days ago for the first time throwing from a stand still position. Sling Shot Disc Golf channel has some real good content to

Thank you! Still a work in progress to maintain the form at highest effort levels, but it's gotten better throughout the last week. I'm working on vertical shoulder collapse next.

@@NickCarroll You are looks more “whippy” than I remember seeing in a lot of your videos I have watched. Next time you make your way out to Briscoe let me know. I’d love to play a round with you.

@@epb0394 Will do! I'll add your name to my spreadsheet. We're going to be hitting more of the southside courses through the end of the year. We play on weekends, but I usually don't know my itinerary until the Friday before. I can message you 1 day or so in advance. 🙂

That was quick! Thanks you for the response. The reason I feel drawn to your channel is the real life golf challenges. Not the pros getting together slinging 450 feet to set up birdie attempts. Although that can be very entertaining. I’m 62 so my arm speed is ….well….not so impressive. I think breaking down the actual arm control/movement is going to be immensely helpful. Can you recommend any senior/seasoned disc golf channels that you follow?

Yes, Nick Arnette is one to follow. Great guy, also my level of content in terms of novice-rec-level content. Robbie C is a great one for beginners, novice, and rec-level audiences.

To up right. Lean forward to get more space and to get your shoulders moving down to up to keep the disc straight instead of right.

I think it helped to some extent, to basically nail down the feeling of my arm when throwing. It also showed me what my body does when it's prevented from rounding, and what I need to do in order to have it work properly. It's not a substitute for active formwork, but it's definitely supplemental, and I think useful for helping people learn about their body when learning how to throw backhand.
