I was just wondering about your planning process and here's a peek into it! Thanks! Could you do a video about how you go about selecting locations? And what kind of pre planning happens before you get onsite? (Assuming you don't just go do it blindly!)

That's a wildlife trail camera. Some hunters use them to study what wildlife pass through and when. I use one in and around my yard to see what critters get into my garden. Couple questions: What is that tall dark spire on the top of the mountain? Do you fly with any kind of radio tracking device on your aircraft? I have one that's tiny and frequency programmable. It's timed to start beaconing in about 30 minutes so if it doesn't get back and I can't shut it off then it starts the beacon. Battery lasts for several days. Use a VHF or UHF hand held scanner or ham radio and a directional antenna to hunt it down. It's good for several miles.
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, didn't know about that. I just lost a quad a few weeks ago. That would have been perfect. I knew I was looking within 50 meters of where it went down, even had contact still at times but the nearby waterfalls were way too loud to hear a beeper. The thing you're talking about would have been perfect! I'll have to look into it. The spire thing must be some kind of science tech, I assume collecting weather data or monitoring a nearby long silent volcano possibly.
@glevideo3 жыл бұрын
@@FalconRadFPV You can find these at distance-rc.com/store/ . I have no connection to them other than being a customer. The unit is very tiny and I just use blue painters tape to fasten the unit to the side of my quad. The antenna is a short limp piece of wire so I slid a small coffee stir straw over it to stiffen it and taped it into an upright position. I turn it on when I launch the quad but it doesn't start transmitting until a programmable set delay time. I have mine set at about 20 or 30 minutes. When the quad comes back and lands I then turn it off and it has never transmitted. But if the quad doesn't make it back then in about 30 minutes time from take off the beacon starts transmitting so then I start hunting. I've only had one instance of this happening but it was a very happy ending. These little units should have more exposure on KZbin and on model plane forums. They are well engineered and work exceptionally well. The price is right too. They do not depend on call service or GPS. It's just direct tracking from the beacon to your radio receiver and antenna. Use a UHF scanner or your UHF hand held ham radio and preferably a small directional antenna to help hone in on the signal.

The greatest of all time in long range... Looking forward to building a Falconrad 7! Just curious on your electronics choice. You look to be using a Diatone stack, which isn't known for being the most premium components although I know they have a generally good reliability record. I have been building up a long range 6in FRH quad and after having a bad run in with Diatone (a stack basically exploded and spun up all motors in my hand. Failsafe was on drop etc. etc. Was not the firmware fault, the hardware failed.) I have decided to go with premium electronics (BrainFPV Radix 2 and Hobbywing ESC). I am mostly wondering what reliability you personally have seen from the Diatone F722 FC and 50a ESC as clearly you trust it to long range. Am just curious. Excited for the release of your frame in the near future!
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
Good eye, and great question. I have found diatone flight controllers to not be so great with GPS units. My guess is a lower quality parts and or circuit design around the 5v regulator. I was really only using it because it was the only other stack I could buy locally in a store. I was sick of messing around twice in a row with bad gyro readings from an Iflight sussed-d f7 twinG FC. For my new build I'll be using the 50amp esc from the iflight stck with a JB F7 flight controller. (ironicly also made by iflight, but different gyro's and I would assume different circuitry around the gyros) I mostly trusted it. Heck I flew over 1000 long range km's on an old dys f4 pro V2 with a diatone mamba esc, lol. Good choice I think for your parts. I haven't used them before but I've read good things about that combo.

Thanks for sharing your LR expertise, didn't know there was so much planning before a LR flight. Also, would it make more sense to use iNav instead of BF for LR?
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
Your welcome. Yes it would make sense to use INAV instead of betaflight if you want all the autonomous features that it has. I really only use the home arrow 90% of the time. I don't want to go through getting INAV setup just to end up not using any of the added features and wishing it was more like Betaflight. A lot of people seem to think that INAV would be a better choice for me but I feel like I'm doing well the way I'm doing it. I've lost two quads in three years, only one was due to a firmware and/or hardware issue, the other one I flew too far and ran out of battery.

Nice flights. I'm not sure if I should get some 18650 6s2p packs or go for a big 21700 6s2p. Do you think the added weight will be too much and cause negative effects on efficiency???
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
I find the extra weight does lower the efficiency. Flying around the test field with no altitude gain at 50 to 60 kph I got 19 or 20 km with the dual 18650 6s and 22 or 23 km with the dual 21700 6s (with gopro) So not as much as you would hope with 40% more battery. For one long range flight I changed the gopro for the smo 4k 30gram camera, I flew up and down 2 mountains beside each other and got 21km with about 3000m altitude gain with the dual 21700 6s. You can feel the extra weight in tight situations though. The dual 18650's is a better flying setup because of it's lower weight.

@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by a digital channel. If you are referring to using dji gear, I'm not sure as I have never tried it before. I do use 2 high gain antennas together on my rapidfire module. Keeping line of sight and good antennas is key. Keeping line of sight sounds easy but video blackouts can be quite sudden at times.
@evmoFPV3 жыл бұрын
You sure can. I've successfully taken the DJI system out to 6.5 miles on a wing of mine. With quads, and flying in terrain like in this video, I can reliably get 3+ miles. I used to do all my long range flying analog but I prefer using the DJI system now. I have a Source One 7" with a Vista on it running antennas similar to Falcoln.

I have a mid-range 5” quad and the gps on it sometimes doesn’t point to home, especially in turns. Do you think this could be from taking too many hits? I have an adequate number of sats so I’m not sure what the problem is.
@FalconRadFPV3 жыл бұрын
It might just be the refresh rate of the OSD element, most gps units come with 9600 baud default but with auto baud checked off in the betaflight configurator and gps set to auto in the ports tab it will usually default to 50000 baud or something like that. If it points the right way a couple of seconds after you stop turning then it should be working ok.

Also it carries a 4200mah 6s lipo on top, my old frame would only fit a 2600 mah 6s at most. (I was flying with li-ion, I'm just trying to make this quad fit almost any battery configuration.)

I've done a few long range flights with it. The GPS worked at first but now it never does and there is no current meter so no mah count. only a simulated one. Those two things together just kind of put me off the flywoo explorer. I might try installing a better gps and a current meter and giving it another try. I even made a couple of 4s 18650 packs just for that quad, so I guess I really should give it another shot. Flying around the test field I got just over 20km total distance and made it about 3 km away at one point. So it's a capable design, I just don't like the electronics it comes with.

Another great video. Spring freshet can have a lot of power. A few years back, one pushed a very large forestry bridge down the mountain about a thousand feet and into Duncan Lake. So much power. The game cam. Hunters leave them out to establish where and when (or if) animals frequent an area. What species, etc. Cheating in my books. Not anti-hunting by any means but figure if you need game cams and drones (drones are illegal but people do it) to hunt, you're a shitty hunter.

I've wondered the same thing. There is a matching one on another peak a couple of mountains over. My guess would be something to do with weather observation maybe? There is a dormant volcano on the other side of the valley that I've flown a few times and I've read that it's monitored somehow, that would be my second guess.
