Sounds much more like the early years without the Storm. “Back in Black” and later sounds great with the storm.

That’s because Angus and Malcolm didn’t start using the boost on their records until the back in black album. They only used it live. They liked their live tone better than their studio tone but they didn’t know what it was that made it better until they used the boost in the studio.

I love SoloDallas products. I’ve got the TSR Classic, Boost, and Storm. All have their own thing. The Storm has been on my board for over 2 years and isn’t going anywhere soon. I run it into a Friedman Dirty Shirley. Stunning guitar sounds. Good stuff!

I just got the captor and have an Origin 50 on the way. I will be putting my 78' LP custom through it. Am also excited about all the Solodallas stuff. The boost may be what I go for.
@vin9976
@vin9976 11 ай бұрын
Hey man, how do you like your Origin 50? I'm chasing ACDC tone on a budget and this looks like a pretty hot setup. I'm REAL worried about the 50 volume tho lol and getting the gain needed to get that Back in Black tone. Did you get the combo?
@willdenham
@willdenham 11 ай бұрын
@@vin9976 I think it's a great amp. I completed a build on a JTM50, the Highway to Hell amp and that's untouchable. The Origin is still a decent amp though. I think no lower than 50 is the way to go. You need the heft of that transforner. I am actually going to be selling mine, because I am starting a plexi SLP build and the wife said something has to go to justify it. Mine is lightly used with box and warranty still intact, very reasonable price. It sounded like an old Bassman with my 78' run through it on the neck pup. It has plenty classic rock tones, must be cranked to get them, like any Marshall. Great cleans too, and edge breakup. Sounds fantastic with my Tele! Just use an attenuator.
@vin9976
@vin9976 11 ай бұрын
How far off is that JTM for the origin? Awesome you are building! Is your 50 a combo? I like the compact portability of the 50 combo but not sure if that’s the way to go. Or do the combos suck?
@willdenham
@willdenham 11 ай бұрын
@@vin9976 I only buy/build heads. Gives you freedom of speaker selection, I know a builder who rails against combos because components are too cramped and susceptible to overheating. I also think heads are lighter and more portable. The JTM is like a classic muscle car but also twice the price of the Origin, even as a build, although my tech built that one. The Origin is a lot of bang for buck. You can get classic, old school tones. It can sit with the old plexis but the plexis are still in a league of their own. The Origin will scratch Marshall itch for reasonable $.

Thank you. In my humble opinion, it definitely is an improvement compared with your older how-I-get-the-ac-dc-sound (origin 5c). This (more expensive but still wallet-friendly) alternative is really interesting for us mortals.

Hi Sasha, nice video! I was wondering: with the many possibilities of the Captor X and the intrinsic tone of the Origin, why do you use a pedal as opposed to dialing in the tone you're after on the amp itself? It does have more than enough gain for a vintage, AC/DC sound, and with the Captor X and good monitors you can crank the amp up to its full expressive potential. I do have a similar setting in my home studio: Origin 50h, Captor X, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. I usually have the amp gain and master on 8, EQ to taste, I play a little bit with the room settings on the Captor to fatten up the tone, and the rest is rolling the volume knob up or down. And I am so lazy that I rather not use any pedal at all. What does the pedal bring that you weren't able to achieve just with the amp?
@SRguitar
@SRguitar 3 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean but even if I use more gain on the amp it will never sound like with the pedal in front of it. The pedal makes the sound a bit more compressed with more sustain. Imo for the Back in Black Album guitar sound the pedal is really important, you won't get that with the Origin alone I think. For the early Bon Scott area stuff you don't need it, that's right.

@MichaelCoughlanmusic
@MichaelCoughlanmusic 3 жыл бұрын
Of course it would. It's the mahogany wood body and hum bucker pickups of the SG that are most important. Adding a Marshall tube amp enhances the sound even more, though you can get close with a VOX too. Even my Blues Jr. gets in the neighbourhood with some tweaking. And remember that Angus didn't use his Schaffer-Vega wireless (what the Storm pedal is repackaging) on all tracks for AC/DC's classic albums, just selected solo and rhythm tracks. I think you would find a treble boost pedal would get you close too!

for AC/DC get an old MOSFET 100, they are more "raw" & "in yer face" when ya gas'm! they do AC/DC way better, Origins are way too sweet for that! They need the right pedal ta pull that off. The Origin 20 is made for sweet classic rock and takes jus the right pedals to get what ya want from them. But even then the MOSFET would kick its ass for AC/DC style raw vibes!

@rikodzn

Presence is 1 for Angus. gain 2, T, M, andB are 3, 3, 3. This is not a mystery. Watch rig rundown and learn the exact amp settings looking at Angus's live amps. This is not even close. Where you hear him say "perfect" is not what Angus uses. You can't get Angus sound with distortion. He doesn't use any.
