Wow. No offense to the many who worked really hard for their careers in the field, but I feel like your path to medical school was the most realistic I've heard. Your grades weren't too off the charts, you chose to go to M.S. naturally and it didn't seem like anyone pushed you. You made goals for yourself and did your best to work with your colleagues. Most importantly, you did what you felt was right. As a high school junior, I'm feeling a lot more motivated to study medicine than I've ever been! Subscribed.

@@kaungzawhtet3935 3.7, college GPA (also I did drop a few courses throughout college, and had a few C's: I've heard that's a thing that discourages pre meds) is definitely important but even now going into my 3rd year I see high schoolers super worried about volunteering and gpa for prestigious universities when in reality the college you go to doesn't matter that much. I went to a small state school on loans. (year late lmao). Also some of my classmates have middle of road (3.4-3.6) GPAs in college. and made up for it with higher MCATs, research, work experience, or volunteering. There's a lot that goes into it. So I wouldn't let one fault kill any dream you have of becoming a physician if that's what you want to do. And as a follow up for predictors of success I was near top of my class M1 year so even if you aren't a top undergraduate or high school student you can still kill it in medical school.

SuperMightyChicken it's just college classes are so different. I had a 2.3 GPA in high school. I was more of the "fun" guy, but in college, I'm getting Bs and As in the super hard upper levels, while my friends that had 4.3 GPAs are getting lower than me. It actually makes me wonder how useless the public education system in america is.

Those are inspirational words. I post the following to help those high school kids who feel they aren't up to par on their future doctor plans. I dropped out of high school at 16. I came back years later and got an adult education diploma. Eventually I went to college and graduated in the top 1%. So its never too late. If this high school dropout can make it, so can you.

Get at least a 3.8 GPA (cumulative and science), 32 on the MCAT(retake it until you get at least a 30 then stop), 500+ hours of volunteering, 50+ hours of shadowing, 300+ hours of leadership experience, 200+ hours of community service (soup kitchen, homeless shelter, youth center, etc.), 100+ hours of research experience, have STELLAR interview skills, 2 letters of recommendation from science professors and 1 non-science professor, and you'll most likely get into med school. In-state schools are best because Med schools don't accept many out of state applicants. Yes it's extremely hard but the reality is, 41% of applicants get into a med school program. That means 59% of people just wasted 4 years of their lives majoring in biology and will end up going a different path until they reapply next year (most likely to a post-baccalaureate program and beefing up their applications with more hours of each thing I've listed). If you have all that I listed but maybe your GPA is between 3.5 and 3.7 and/or your MCAT is between 26 and 30, you are a prime candidate for any DO program. Although you will not be an MD, you will still be a doctor, taught everything you would at an allopathic school (MD), be able to get into a residency program and will be able to have any specialty you want. Yes, you can still be a surgeon with a DO but getting into residency will just be more difficult and getting into a top residency program will be nearly impossible but not completely, it does happen. A DO is better than an MD from a Caribbean school. What I've said may sound harsh and you can refuse to believe it but this is the reality of getting into med school and there is no shortcut or secret advice. You want to save lives. That's your motivation to succeed.

This is a really important video and I applaud you for making it! It's easy to only see the pretty nice part of school and nobody really talks about the struggle behind the success. I was a straight A student through middle school and younger and once I entered high school in grade 10 (in Canada we start in grade 10) I had a bit of a crash and burn moment and by the time I was in my first semester of grade 12 I had left school altogether not long after I was diagnosed with pretty severe ADHD and OCD and now am back in school with high grades again (go figure) but sort of back tracking and now not graduating on time but videos like these always help remind me that just because your path in life may be different doesn't mean anything is out of reach and I'm planning on pursuing medicine in the future! Everybody makes mistakes and I think more people need to take the approach of it's ok you can fix it, rather than give up now. Really inspiring thank you!

This just proves that college is much more important than that of high school. I hear all the time “y’know, you have to do super well in high school to go to med school.” Which is true in a sense, because you do need to get into college... but it’s not really all that accurate! Overall college GPA, pre-med classes GPA, EC’s, and MCAT score are what actually matter... plus! There’s NO shame in getting help! Almost all colleges have free tutoring services!

You are my idol. I started my freshman year of college away from home in the fall of 2015. After one semester I decided I hated being away from home, and was unsure of my future, so I packed up my stuff and quit. Now its about two years later and I'm just now ready to go back to college. Ive always secretly played around with the idea of being a doctor, and over these last couple months its been really sticking with me. Although I am not 100% sure I want to pursue a career in medicine, I definitely think it is a good possibility. Being out of school for a while has made me a bit hesitant to go back, and also makes me doubt my abilities even though I know that I am intelligent. I found your channel about a year ago and it has been breath of fresh air. Just watching your video about your journey from high school to med school made me open my eyes because you said you had struggled a bit in school... and look at you know. You're becoming a doctor. You're almost done with med school! You are such an inspiration. I remember in that video you mentioned that you didn't have an initial plan of what you wanted to do for a career. I was undecided about what I wanted to do for so long, and it makes me confident to hear that you started off confused and unclear about your future path too. I hope you accomplish everything you ever dreamed of. I hope I can too! Best of luck!!!

I can relate in some level. Since I moved in America around my first year in high school and it was one of the biggest struggle I’ve ever been. Given that I also moved to japan with no known knowledge about their language and went for a whole year with nothing but just sitting in class and not have to learn a single thing relating to education just focusing on learning their language. Those changes really had a toll on me and my school career as a kid.

Thank you for helping me believe in myself again, you've given me so much hope. I've wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember (literally). I was also a straight A student, but I ended up going into the IB diploma program from 11th grade to my current 12th grade year, and my grades plummeted, even for the classes I'm best at. I've started doubting my skills and knowledge, and wondering if I could actually take the pressure of Med school if I was already going nuts in high school. ^-^" Good luck to everyone here with whatever you want to do.

How did you pay for med school? Are there any scholarships or financial aid opportunities?

Thanks so much for the tips and advice, this will really help me in highschool(I'm also not the best student I don't take those "special classes, but I'll try my best to make it into them) I still have a lot of time, thank you.

I just found out about your channel and started watching all your videos! :) we have so much in common; I moved to Canada from Korea when I was in 7th grade, I have a brother, I love music (I play the flute and I love singing/dancing!!), and I hope to become a doctor! I'm just starting undergrad this year so I'm still really far from med school, but I hope to get into one one day! Thanks for sharing great tips and awesome vlogs

This gives me hope! I did pretty good 9th-11th (Mostly As, maybe a few Bs scattered around). My senior year I had, if I remember correctly, 3 As, 2 Bs, 2 Cs and a D+ (that was in a math class... I suck at math already and having senoritis+anxiety at the time made things worse). Being from a small town I did not have many extracurriculars; I was in a club for 3 years (we only had 2 clubs) and was not in sports bc the only sport I like is soccer and my school didn't have it. So that sucked too. I just graduated in 2016 and took a year off to save $ and figure out my path. I decided on becoming a PA. I have always been interested in the medical field and PA is perfect. All your tips really motivate me towards my goal! Now I just need to make it through undergrad~

Great video! I'm currently doing a BSc at uni and am hoping to use it to get into a health science related degree like Biomedical Science and then from there try and get into Medicine. I didn't have a strong sense of direction about what I wanted to study when I was in high school either which is why I didn't do as well as I know I could've and should've but I've started to realise that it really isn't the end of the world and there's still plenty of time and opportunity to improve and strive toward achieving big things academically after high school.

Same! I was in average classes my whole life and I was usually told that I was 2 years behind my grade in elementary school and I struggled with ELA, but all that changed I got put into a Honors English class, US history honors, and Physical Science honors. And I have been pushing along but very stressed as these classes are so new to me, but I have managed to get all As in these honors classes besides English I got a 88 so I am slowly adapting to the work load but I think in the future I’ll be able to be use to all this work!

I just finished high school with a 3.0 gpa. I graduated pretty mediocre, but oh man did I have fun these four years. As for college my goals are pretty concrete. A high gpa and a bachelors degree in chemistry. I really hope that I can get into medical school. I don't see myself as anything other than a doctor of medicine.

Hey there, love your videos! I was wondering if you could make some sort of medical equipment needed for med school video (such as a stethoscope etc) and reviews. Keep up the good work!

I didn't do my high school in America so I don't know pretty much about the school syllabus in America. But when I started college, I found most of the American students are so smart that they have understandings on lots of disciplines and languages.

I didn't do that well in high school either but I managed to go into med school! I worked on other exams (such like those SAT exams you have on there I guess) and worked hard in my last year though to do it better. [not in the US*]. You can do it, everyone! ♥
