Note: I coached at Harvard, one of my responsibilities was to coordinate recruiting. One day, I got a call from the admissions office. He said to me "can you use so and so?" He followed with, "if you can use so and so you can have them, if not, they won't get in." Moral: sports and EC's can make the difference. She is right on the money.

I may have gone 0/4 for elite privates (Harvard, MIT, CalTech, Stanford), but I also got into UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Barbara for engineering I only threw this part in just in case anyone looking into these schools is here:) My stats in highschool: 1290 SAT, 26 ACT, 2 sports, 3.9 unweighted GPA It may not seem like great stats, but I did not go to the greatest high school either. I do feel like essays can MAJORLY bump you up. I spent months crafting the essays and then can really show the admissions boards the reasons behind your "stats"(can go on a rant about how essays are lowkey predatory and seek out "trauma p*rn" from people wanting to get in) So my advice is this: Don't get down on yourself for not scoring as high as the person next to you. Don't get down on yourself for getting rejected into schools. Just because you don't meet their average does not guarantee your rejection. So if anyone looking to apply to colleges is reading this, YOU GOT THIS I fell below the 25th percentile in a lot of categories for the schools I was accepted for, but I'm now still here, in my 3rd year at UCSD for computer science, surviving & thriving:) Sorry for the long-ish comment, my inner RA positivity kicked in LMAO Also, I loved the video! I just also wanted to share my take as a non-Ivy student and Ivy reject haha

I was barely top 10 in my school (and i was the only one that got in!) and had a B on my junior transcript. i think my passion in my essays actually got me into penn. it super important to show personality and how you fit into that school. what I wanted to say is don't be discouraged. i thought i had no chance and now I'm going there next year!

Lol I should make one called: "How I got accepted in to all 3 of the tier 1 Canadian universities I applied too and opted to enroll in the sketchy tier 3 in my home town for free instead" The twist being of course, that this allowed me to be in a better position to negotiate with 0 debt on the books and nothing to lose for learning how to negotiate before taking the first opportunity that presented itself...Some of my friends graduated the better schools at the same time I graduated from a similar discipline at Nipissing (the holiday inn express of universities). Not to pat my own back and huff my own butt stench but I must say it still surprises me that I'm the only one of us to clear 6 figures and have no debt...besides the mortgage on the 2nd investment property...but that cashflows more than twice what I pay into it every month.

Appreciate the advice you are giving to the community here 100% but let me also say this: An Ivy League school is not needed. If for some reason you can’t achieve these “perfect” scores do not and I mean do NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP. When we are young and in high school sometimes the maturity level just isn’t there yet to make straight As and aspire to have high test scores. High school was very easy for me but I still made some Cs just because I wouldn’t do homework or even look at a study guide, etc. So naturally I went to a state school and some of that maturity still lacked, especially in the beginning couple years. My gpa was atrocious and embarrassing. I didn’t want to even show my face at the career fair. Luckily friends convinced me to go anyway. Long story short I ended up working for a major company making 6 figures entry level as a software engineer in the Midwest where that money goes a long way. Working towards promotions currently and couldn’t be happier. This is all just to say if you aren’t that straight A person or didn’t achieve the test scores you wanted, it will be okay. There is a place for you somewhere and maybe it’s an Ivy League maybe it’s not. Either way just be the best version of you that you can be and it will work out. Good luck on your endeavors friends!

Great video!! My name is Andres by the way. It's pleasure to meet you. I'm still in a community college. I'm a military child, so I moved from state to state from kindergarten to my freshman year of college. For right now, I'm currently living in Florida. While I lived in the north side in my teenage years, I always hated the cold haha. I really liked the hot weather better than the cold. For right now, I do like the hot weather. It's hot over here in Florida for right now. I have a younger brother who will be graduating from high school in next month. He did not take it seriously; he is always into video games more than studying. He has pretty descent grades throughout his high school career. For right now, he has a 2.75/4.0 gpa. During my high school career, I did not took any APs, nor honors courses due to my move. I've been studying at a community college for 5 years. I will be earning my AA degree in general studies next year in the spring. After I complete with my AA degree in general studies, I will be in a BA program for radio TV and journalism. Television is my dream career. I was going to do acting all my life, but I did not have the privileges to do acting at a younger age because I had to move from state to state due to my dad's job of armed forces. I'm looking forward to get into for auditioning as my acting career in this summer or in next summer. I grew up with Individual Educational Plan (IEP) during my school years due to my diagnosed with autism. For right now, I'm 23 years old. It has never stop me from doing anything. I graduated from high school in 5 years ago. I was a top 8% of my high school graduation class. My high school gpa is a 3.71/4.0 but it is technically a 3.7/4.0 scale. However, I had a 12 on my ACT composite score, but I still made it to community college. That's all it matters. For right now, my college gpa is a 2.7/4.0 scale. I still have time to raise my college gpa. Again, you did a great job with your extracurriculars, your stats, and everything. That's very impressive what you did. My dream career is a singer, actor, broadcast, journalist, and author. I will be focusing on one or two at a time in that way I will not get stressed out easily. I'm so excited that I will be watching my younger brother to get his high school diploma. He will be going to the same community college as me in this fall semester. Good luck at university wherever you go. God bless you and your family. 🙏

Hey Taylor, I have a 4.41 weighted and 3.96 unweighted GPA, 1430 SAT, multiple leadership roles in clubs that I myself founded plus several other groups that I actively participate in, varsity soccer captain for 2 years, and have multiple passion projects related to my intended major of finance. My SAT score is low, but it was extremely affected by the pandemic, as I took the test nearly a year after my most intense studying. I was consistently scoring in the high 1400's and low 1500's in my prime, but that's besides the point. With respect to the PSAT, I was a national merit commended scholar, which i guess shows that I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to testing. I have also received multiple awards within my school, including my school's most coveted and prestigious academic award. Btw I plan on applying early decision as Penn is my dream school and i will be submitting the application very soon. Given all of this, do you think I stand a chance to get in? It’s not getting in that’s necessarily the hard part (for high achieving students)... paying for it is the hard part and I cannot emphasize how lucky you are to have parents that were able to cover it! I got into UCLA for my masters in aerospace and I’m honestly not sure how I’d be able to pay 50k/year (out of state) if I go there, and finances are the only impediment in going there (and I probably could’ve gotten in there or any other number of cool places for undergrad, too, instead of going to my much cheaper local state university), so feel extremely fortunate that your parents are willing to support your education as much as they (presumably) have!
@lawrencechungg3 жыл бұрын
Actually, a lot of the ivies and other schools (stanford, MIT, etc) give out lots of financial aid. Most students won't be paying the 70k+/year to attend these elite institutions, however, the financial aid they receive still might not cover the cost of attendance.

Late to the game here but I just want to say, as an international student who had never even been on a plane before I applied to colleges in the US, I really had no idea what would be considered an interesting story to tell that would make my essays stand out. I wrote something super cheesy about something my boyfriend at the time had supposedly said. Honestly, in my case I’m sure I got into a top liberal arts school despite my essays, not because of them. And to think of how I could’ve written about my childhood growing up with my grandparents in the countryside milking goats and waiting in bread lines to use coupons in the first years of the post-communism transition. Or how a friend of mine and I secured the sponsorship and mentorship of a local newspaper so we could start a school newspaper (no funding for such things in schools in my home country) and how I’ll never forget how the editor in chief of that newspaper described satire as “something that makes you laugh the whole time you’re reading it, but you can’t help crying once you’ve finished” (rough translation). I know it’s been a while for you on the getting into college content but going over ideas for interesting essay topics might be a good one especially for students who are not from privileged backgrounds and do not have access to first-hand knowledge of how Admissions actually works.

The US College system absolutely blows my mind. It puts so much stress on kids... I definitely prefer having university admissions based primarily on grades and scholarships based on everything 😅
@LauraPalmerD3 жыл бұрын
As a European who went to undergrad in the US and grad school in Europe, I think the US system is better, easier, and more diverse. Yes, these Ivy-s are crazy...but there are so many universities. The fact that universities look at the overall pictures (grades, SAT/ACTs, extracurricular, recommendations, etc) means that students who didn't have good grades (but may have an overall good portfolio) can get into schools or students who are studious but otherwise don't do much (no extracurriculars for example) can also get in. There are so many options and opportunities, unlike in Europe where it's grades, grades, and grades only and basically your middle school grades can screw you (you don't get into a 'college-track' HS and you are f-ed).
@marinomave46133 жыл бұрын
@@LauraPalmerD From my view, it is a mixed bag. It is a good thing to differentiate students based on extra-curricular activities and character rather than 0.01 points of ranking. However, it opens the door to unfair and unethical decisions.
@Melanie-ww4yk3 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons that the SATs and ACTs exist is because the rigor of high schools can vary greatly from school to school. It gives schools a standard to judge all students off of. But because some students just aren't great SAT/ACT takers, they also look at grades. Ultimately, colleges (especially higher end ones) want smart, well rounded (different interests/extra curriculars), students who are passionate about what they do/like, are able to manage all their responsibilities, and will probably be successful in whatever field they choose. So, looking at SAT/ACT scores, grades, ECs, essays, etc. is the best way of getting the best look at each candidate. It is a lot of pressure for students, but I do see why they do it like that.

It gets 4.5 stars from me and I will happily recommend it to anyone about to embark on this gruelling journey. Now you maybe wondering on why only 4.5 stars. Well I thought that there was only 1 area kind of missing. In order to complete the series, some insight into what factors influenced the schools you ultimately applied to (>20?) might be useful to some. Mine were primarily driven by the areas of study I was thinking about and financial considerations but of course these weren't the only things. Just throwing it out there. By the way kudos on breaking the 10K barrier!

3 years to late but in Germany you basically go to a university with your "Abitur" (High School Dagree), say that you wanna study this subject and based on your grade, they write you in. It´s fairly simple and subjects like humane medicine, psychology which are very popular to study or which have limited spots have an "Numerus Clausus" which is pretty much a grade which you have to reach to get into that subject.

What do you think about being proactive rather than reactive? I think that If you genuinely enjoy AP Classes and ECs, and do good enough in standardized tests, getting into a great college is going to be easer than doing all of that just because you want to get into a great college. From inside to outside rather than outside to inside. What do you think?
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
For sure! It's definitely a self selecting process in many ways. I'd still encourage those who don't naturally love the APs and ECs to challenge themselves, at least in the subjects that they naturally enjoy a bit more. Always good to get outside the comfort zone a little 😊

we need to hear at least something about your friends. and yes, romantic life (or lack thereof.) as andy bernard said: Andy: So you love baseball. What else do you love? Let’s round you out as a person. Shane: Hey, I’m really sorry, I’m just trying to… focus here on the game. Andy: I get it, man. I love it. That’s what makes you a good coach. You know, but as a fan, it just helps me enjoy the game better if I know the coach loves his wife.

Looking back at my HS I am surprised the Ivys reject ONLY 1/4 of perfect SATs or half of valedictorians... These are usually people with such magnetic and overall amazing personalities! :P Of course back then I was super perplexed by data like this...
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha yesss I agree 😂 pretty incredible that they take 3/4 perfect SAT scores (ofc those people likely have perfect everything else as well, but still!)

But why go to an Ivy League? In the end, nobody looks at what college you attended past your first job. I’ve seen doctors who have attended “Caribbean med schools” who are outstanding surgeons and leaders among there peers. Save your money, get that piece of paper at a state college and figure out what you really want to do with your life.
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Most importantly for the network! Of course that doesn’t mean it’s the answer for everyone, though. I talk about this a lot more in my Wharton experience video if you’re interested

Exactly, there's such a stressful culture around teenagers to get into an "ivy league school" but for what...? the name? Tbh I don't think going to an ivy makes as much of a difference (or any) in the long run as most people think, as long as you're driven and motivated

It is also important to know the financial and educational history and background of a student's parents. Are the student's parents paying the $50,000 yearly tuition? Are the student's parents wealthy enough so that the student never has to worry about how to fund any aspect of college? Much of college education in the U.S. is a replication of a student's parents' social and economic status.

I’ll be sure to share this video with my daughter who is finishing up with her graduate level studies at Columbia with a degree to become a high school counselor specializing in college entrance for juniors and seniors in less than two weeks. One question regarding the interview: how should one dress up? After all, this is not a job interview. I had my share of a few interviews for Cornell and others but that was more than three decades ago and honestly I forgot how I dressed.

@@TaylorBell I think there are some considerations for FGLI students that could be helpful for your video. For example, scores are often compared to state and district averages as well. I went to school in a poorer district with generally lower test scores. This means a 32 on the ACT counts for a great deal more than it generally would, given that the local average score was much lower. At my high school specifically, the average was around a 19. This is to say FGLI students should not be dissuaded just because they can't afford tutors and push for that 36 on the ACT. It's still very much possible with a score in the lowest quartile.

Hey Taylor, do you have any idea of roughly how many Huntsman students (per class) are an Italian target? What about Arabic? i wanted to get a good idea of the distribution of target languages.
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aryan!! It differs every year but the two most popular target languages are Spanish and French, followed closely by german or italian I'd say. My year, I think there were maybe 4 italian targets? And a handful of arabic targets as well (my year was 46 kids).

Well I've long been done with college but this was super fascinating 😊🎉 I loved hearing about how you got accepted into Wharton! I loved the fun facts about your lineage with aviation, one of these years my husband and I will take lessons and get our private pilot's licenses! I think you answered all the questions I would've had throughout, but are you still going to be doing the side hustle of reselling on the side while doing full time consulting and of course part time tubin'? 😂🤗
@TaylorBell3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Brittani!! Yess the aviation runs deep over here. I'm sooo excited to hear about your experience with flying when you start.. you'd absolutely love it! And great question. My original plan was to keep up with it, but after realizing how much of it comes down to consistency (i.e, how much my sales took a hit after taking 1 week off) I don't think I'll be able to keep it up at the same level. I'll try still share my closet every day, but I don't think I'll be actively listing a lot of new items (when I move to NY, anyway. I'll still do it while I'm home 😎). Thanks so much for watching girl!! 🎉
