I knew her well growing up also.. she was very dark skin than her complexion and had 4b hair.. like she always had them braided until hs graduation she let it out..her hair was crazy long about tailbone length when stretched..😭 Till this day she keeps them in braids.. notice how many waist length natural strictly keep their hair protected in braids and twists.. I will be doing this for the next 5-6 years😭😂 Wish me luck❤

There are some beautiful short styles with twists. Is your hair trimmed and even without wispy ends? By the time you put on a little lippy and mascara, your look will lift. If you are not against it, you can lay your edges for a more 'polished' look. I'm trying to enjoy my hair at every stage. I know it's challenging but maybe if you start of with freshly cut ends and a nice shape you will see a massive difference and won't need to add hair. Just thought I would offer a perspective. Enjoy your hair journey and a Happy News Year

I get a lot more shedding and knots when I wear my hair in twists. Didn’t put two and two together that twists are a great way to start dreads, so that’s what it felt like my hair was trying to do every 2-3 weeks. Braiding my hair without extensions keeps my hair stretched and moisturized.

This is so great and 100% works! One thing I'd also add that someone taught me is that if you wear extension braids, moisturise your braids regularly in the same way you'd moisturise your hair because the braiding hair won't dry out your hair. This has really helped me retain length and prevent knots/breakage when I want to wear kinky twists/box braids/cornrows with extensions.

An African women that braids mine and my daughter's hair, told me that if you want thick hair braid it. She said if are looking for length you are supposed to twist it. She stated once your hair gets to the desired fullness from braiding it, it's time to switch over and start twisting it. She also said threading your hair makes it grow as well. She said in her country (Mali) they use it as a natural relaxer. And that over time your hair starts to just grow out straight.

I have my hair in a braid out & all I do is put on a bonnet at night or in the shower to maintain it. Im going on my second week with this braid out. I stopped stretching my hair every night & it makes my hairstyles last longer. Also it avoids over manipulating my hair when it’s not in a protective style. I seen plenty of people grow their hair with just doing wash and gos. Protective styling is not mandatory to grow your hair long as it’s moisturized & healthy it will grow regardless.

As I write this, I'm sat with super dry dirty hair that hasn't been washed in like 5 months though I swam like 2 weeks ago so I guess that's a wash. But I haven't moisturised my hair in forever. I hate combing my hair as well. So when I do I lose a lot coz tangles, which is in the first place the reason I don't comb it. I keep my hair in twists. I shampoo once a week then deep condition. Then I use a leave in conditioner. I detangle with a wide tooth comb. Use my twisting cream and then apply my oil and twist them back up until the next week. I mist my hair daily with Aloe Vera Juice and take my multivitamin and sleep with my satin bonnet. And I only dust my ends when really needed. My hair is really thriving.

Throughout the fall and winter I've been trying to do as many protective styles as possible. But seeing your hair and hearing you talk, I definitely think I'm going to try keeping it in protective styles at least until the summer. It's the beginning of a new year, so I can even easily keep track of the days. Thanks sis 🤙🏾

I'm growing out my hair with twists as well! I was tired of seeing my hair in a bad condition, breaking off so I decided to grow it out. It was about collar bone length in April and now it's either bra strap length or an inch above? I got obsessed with looking at long type 4 natural hair KZbin videos and stuff. Hopefully when my hair is at my target length, I'll calm down. 🤣🤦🏾♀️ And yeah, it's pretty boring wearing twists all the time but it'll be worth it for me later on, I guess.

I love it what you said about how your hair detangles easily and them loving each other, mine does the same when out! You're right, the updo style for taking out your twists was cute. Also, protective styling, moisture and patience will help grow Afro hair, especially where it's kinky, coily and prone to breakage or matting.

I got this tip from a friend I knew who had really short hair monthss back, and then suddenly had a full head later on. I decided to enforce this, despite what people were saying-putting my hair in cornrows and twists, and moisturising it as required. I kept my hair in cornrows for a month(November) and I saw finally, that my hair grew to a happy length. Hoping to achieve more. All these comments are refreshing and I'm so diving into this, full time!! So excited 😃!

Coco T yep. The reason the braiding hair sucks the moisture out of your hair is because the hair isn’t moisturized so it’s absorbing the moisture from your hair.

I too have heard and read that hair grows at 1/4 of an inch a month however that would mean you get 1 inch every 4 months which in 12 months (1 year) would only get 3 inches a year.... 1inch every 4 months 12 months divided by 4 = 3 inches per year SOOOO... if you want 15 inches it would take you 5 years....don't get discouraged your well moisturized, babied hair will grow much faster than 3 inches per year.

I was JUST about to say it but HEAVEN I think covered it. I tried twisting for years but it would always unravel so I just used twists to undo the next morning. But a few months ago I tried braiding a piece for like 1/4 to half an inch then twist 80% of the way then when I get to the end I borrow from the sections to lock it on itself. They still look like full twists and they stay until you unravel them. Even after I put all my products in, and it gets all slippery, but because of my method it stays. Anyways, thanks for this vid lovely! I just followed you on Instagram!
