I've watched this video three times now, Jim. I honestly think it is one of your best! There is so much useful info in it. Do you have any kind of handy chart that shows what bulbs need cold treating and which do not? I plant a lot of different minor bulbs and have been self compiling a list, but I'd sure welcome anything additional you might have. Thank you very much!

I came here because I'm OBSESSED with gardening. Learning every day is also an obsession. You're great man. Great voice, great video, and fantastic information. And Damn.. An extra bonus, you're a very handsome man. Looking forward to more and more videos and information.. I'm doing bulbs this year. Something I haven't done for many, many years. Thanks for the tips!

Found out the hard way that deer absolutely love Tulips. I planted 100 Tulip bulbs and the deer thought my yard was a restaurant. Daffodils they hate. So my yard is covered with Daffodils in the spring.great info Jim, as usual.

Thanks Jim... First year bulb planter (Retired) ...had no idea soil temperature plays such a large part of successful planting. Just found out early this year that sometimes Bulb diameter determines how deep to plant (After I planted the bulbs ... LOL ). Keep up the great work Jim, much appreciated !!!

When I lived in zone 8 in the SE, I did have to refrigerate my tulips. Luckily, even though i am still in zone 8, here in the Pacific NW, that isnt necessary. I am far behind planting things I bought in summer, so I will not be putting new bulbs in this fall. Will be interesting to see which of mine return from last year. Your yard is going to be beautiful and I look forward to your videos.

👍🏼 You just saved me from ruining my bulbs. I was getting ready to put them in, (zone 7b) today! I was not aware of the soil temp mattered, just thought I was supposed to plant them in the fall. THANK YOU for teaching these things and helping me to be successful in my garden.

I can’t have tulips & I love them so! It’s just way too hot/warm here. Even if I cold treat them, it’s usually a bust in my zone 9b, which is a pretty dry, warm microclimate compared to the towns around us, even if technically in the same zone due to our topography. It’s not unusual for us to have a sunny 70-75 degree Xmas day even though we’re in central CA. There’s quite a few bulbs I love that just can’t grow here. It totally sucks. So jealous of you right now 😁. It’s just alliums & lilies for this gardener!

My favorite bulbs are spider bulbs...and it looks like the first year they will give me seeds!! Also try some oxblood lilies.

Great video Jim! Question- I’m in zone 5/6. I’d like to plant some tulips in my large containers by my garage to bloom in spring. Do you know if I can just plant them now and leave them outside all winter? Thank you in advance
@monicasalter57256 жыл бұрын
Found out from personal experience that you can’t depend on the company you order the bulbs from to send your order at planting time. I ordered from two different companies and both have already sent me everything with absolutely no instruction to chill my bulbs. And if it hadn’t been for knowing that it was too darn hot I would’ve wasted a ton of money.

Your bulbs that need to be cold treated, do you treat them like annuals in your zone? Do they just bloom one year? Do you dig them up and cold treat again every year? I planted tulips last year and none came up, I'm in the same zone as you. If we have a cold winter is there a possibility I may still see them? As a northern transplant myself, guess there are still things I'm learning.
@agustasister56246 жыл бұрын
Nope...any zone 7 and higher treat them.as annual..only ones i ever got to come bsck up...and i was shocked 3 years ...was double stem tulips which u csnt find anymore....i moved and they probably are not coming bsck...i use bone meal and blood meal and thr clay area had turned to great soil with 8 years of treatment...compost compost compost and even more with gypsum added...every 2 years..tripple dug every 2 years...easy after about 6 years...like chipping concrete thr first three.

Do you still have good sized *Osmathus* (patio privacy screen), *Sweet Box , Dwarf Carissa , Yaupon* (shade foundation), and *dwarf Burford* (frontscreen) at your nursery? I'll get some *tulips* while there. They seem high maintenance though!

HortTube with Jim Putnam yes, Tommies is the common name for one of the types of Crocus. I got a bunch from Colorblends to plant this year among many other bulbs!

Love all of your great videos. My question or comment pertains to past videos. In you propagation videos you stress keeping propagation flats elevated off of the gravel due to Pathogens, etc. and you promote removing ALL DEAD leaves. I noticed that MANY growers have sand filled raised beds for their propagation programs, ie: Mike McGroarty, or placing propagation flats directly of gravel or weed block. No mention is ever made about replacing the sand periodically or ever removing any dead leaves. Please explain how they get away with this method with out dire consequences.

Good grief Jim ...just how big is that refrigerator??? Do you dig all the holes by hand or do you use a bulb auger attached to your drill to make all those planting holes? Your place is going to be beautiful in the spring!
@JimPutnam6 жыл бұрын
I use a drill bit, hand digging, and some trenching. I will show all the different ways. Thanks for watching.
@greenthumbelina73316 жыл бұрын
I bought more daffodil and tulip bulbs yesterday and will have to start planting them as soon as it stops raining here. I purchased a bulb bit for my drill a couple of weeks ago so that should make planting them easier. I'll be looking forward to your bulb planting video!

If you don't have a thermometer there are several average soil temperature maps online. You can just search your area. It's just an average but better than nothing. Example www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature

i work in the middle east where i can only 'grow' bulbs indoors in a vase of water and some stones.... what do i do when they finish flowering?
@nicolemarie67406 жыл бұрын
Jim?
@monicasalter57256 жыл бұрын
Jim might have a different answer, but I’ve always heard you have to leave the foliage on and keep maintaining the flowers until the foliage turns brown. Then remove foliage lift and store bulb in a cool dry area until you can start over again next year.
