I'm trying some of these bulbs for the first time this year: camassia, chionodoxa, scilla, blanda and de caen anemones, and crocus. I'm glad I watched yours and another video or I would not have known I needed to soak the anemones until I got ready to plant them. And I still have several hundred tulip bulbs to plant around New Year's! They're chilling in my garage mini-fridge. I've never heard of an Amarcrinum before, but I will check those out.

Good grief. I've had tulip bulbs in the bottom of my kitchen fridge for the past 8 weeks, and just remembered I have an empty, but unplugged, mini-fridge in the garage. lol

Jim, I love your videos. Thank you for all the information! For the bulbs that will naturalize ( not your tulips) will you over plant them with annuals/ perennials in the spring and will they then still come back if they are over planted? I’ve had a hard time finding and answer/ determining if I have to plant around them or if I can plant over them.... Thanks so much - I hope you have a great adventure with your son 😀

Can you mix different kinds of bulbs in the same area to have a variety of colors together?
@m.huckaba-barber61582 жыл бұрын
great color attributes! do you have any native spring bulbs for your region? scilia can be very aggressive as a spreader, alternatively, spring beauty bulbs similarly naturalize in regions and are a power house of a food source for early emerging native bees. please search for native plants to incorporate into your plantings and videos. Dutchman's breaches, trillium, may apples, jack-in-the-pulpit...there's so many to choose from!

which company you got the bulbs? Love you planted small bulbs and new varieties; something different than tulips, alliums and daffodils. I have anemone St Brigid and De Caen, can I plant them now in zone 7a or wait until early Spring? Thanks

Hey Jim - I’m in chapel hill. I know this isn’t a tulip video but how do you keep squirrels out of your tulips in the ground? I know you’ve planted 100s in the ground. I do mine in pots that I can cover. Thx

Cannot wait to see your spring display! I am surprised you don't use any amendments when you plant, like BulbTone.
@JimPutnam4 жыл бұрын
I actually think everything gets over fertilized. I use compost and my mulch breaks down and I fertilize once a year.
@ndchick14 жыл бұрын
@@JimPutnam Ahh yes, you have a healthy layer of compost! How could I forget?
@emmalavenham4 жыл бұрын
It is important to keep in mind that the bulbs already have what they need to grow from the last growing season. Adding bulb-tone may help the bulbs root in, but may also attract animals due to its scent which could dig them up...

That is definitely not fun. I flooded them at the old house. I put a hose in a tunnel and watered for a day. It worked. Not a fun water bill though.

I had voles in my lettuce bed but they never ate the lettuce. They tunneled all around it for a few weeks. I just packed the soil back every day and not one plant died. I guess the voles were eating bugs. This is in CA.
@JimPutnam4 жыл бұрын
Those were likely moles and yes they eat insects. The voles will use the mole tunneling and they will eat plant roots.

@@JimPutnam I planted snowdrops for the first time ever a few weeks ago and days later there were tunnels and mounds all around. So I don't guess they will be coming up in the spring, I'm guessing voles ate them. I had read they don't do well in containers so I'm wondering how to every plant them successfully in the future.
@kat.58224 жыл бұрын
@@JimPutnam We had voles in a few of our previous homes. We used the milky spores to get rid of the white grub worms. It takes patience to apply, and about a year or possibly two before you get results, but it has never failed us, and it is environmentally friendly. Our grass recovered nicely and voles disappeared.
