I give the 411 on using raised toilet seats, lift seats, urinals, bidets, sprayers, and overhead lifts to help my husband go to the bathroom. Todd has ALS, and he is still able to transfer with assistance.

Thanks so much for sharing, my family has been battling brain cancer for 12 years now (lvl IV GBM) but mobility has only been an issue for a few weeks now. I have a potty seat only a few feet from his chair, but he has no control over his left side, and very little with the right leg. We just spent 45 minutes in the floor while waiting for my next door neighbor to come home to help, and there was not a thing I could do except try to make him as comfortable as possible. I found your video while searching for some lifts, maneuvers, anything, and while most of your equipment is probably WAY out of my price range, I did find encouragement and the hope that we can figure out something so that I actually CAN do this without a nursing home. Thanks so much for sharing, this video has been a huge help, if only for my ability to stay positive.

This looks perfect. A hoyer lift doesn't really work with my dad because he always seems to slip through it, and since he's in a laying position we can't really put him on the toilet. Using this and that gate belt looks like a great solution.

HH Wow! Between the seat lift, hydraulic lift and a bidet attachment, that would nearly eliminate caregiver in some situations. I’ve never seen the lifts for toileting. I highly recommend a washlette with drying feature. I don’t know if a seat lift is compatible with it or not, but it’s certainly worth looking into and eliminates the need for wiping. Never had an issue since we’ve used one for over five years. God bless this woman and Todd!

Also, with the cheaper urinals, like the ones from the hospital instead of an inva-care, I have found that a wide fingernail file will take care of that sharp lip around the rim, just don’t count on a watertight seal!

This is also helpful for me with my husband who has Parkinson's. After 11 years he's progressing to the point of soon needing a lift. He already has the need for toileting assistance depending on how symptomatic he is. I like the bidet but I believe he'll reject that until he's absolutely unable to wipe himself at all. (Right now he tries but is not clean afterward.) I like the urinal you're using. We've been using condom catheters as needed at night and they have been helpful. If he's less symptomatic, he goes with a regular urinal at night. Quite an expensive setup but less expensive than full-time nursing care.

I found this very useful. Have been using a riser with a sit to stand hoist, and then used hoist as a zimmer to turn 90 degrees to sit on toilet. Sadly, I can no longer do the 90 degree turn on my own. Your ceiling hoist might be my answer to retain independence. 🤗👍

My husband had a massive stroke 2 years ago and is paralyzed on the left side He still uses a bed pan for bowels and a urinal I did not know about the sharp edges although he has road me it felt sharp My hint about the bed pan is to give it a quick spray before each with Pam. Makes clean up a breeze. I use a bleach spray for everything. He also uses an external catheter at night which works great unless he is restless at night and accidentally pulls it off.

Bed pan, spray first, to assist cleaning afterwards. What kind of spray? My wife and others do not like the smell and mess. Would a silicon spray on the plastic surface off the bed pan, help stop the substances sticking too the bed pan? Silicone spray, or silicone coating on the toilet bowl might also assist the cleanliness of the other surfaces? Just to experiment. Our bathroom has a extractor fan. Perhaps automate this, to turn on. Also we have a can of perfume spray to disguise any nasty smells.

In the United States, Medicare will pay for a rolling floor lift, such as a Hoyer. They will pay for a commode seat, too, if needed. If the bathroom is too small, people have had to put commode seats in a bedroom. You may also be able to get equipment from an ALS/MDA loan closet; many large cities have organizations associated with ALS or muscular dystrophies in general, and they often have loan closets.

@@ALS411 If you don't have Medicare or need another option, see if there is an equipment loan program where you live. We just borrowed a hoyer lift from our local Hospital Loan Equipment program, no charge... We are excited to use this with my FIL. If there is an agency where you live and they loan out bedside commodes and other adaptive equipment, check to see if they have a hoyer lift or a "sit to stand". I am hoping we can use the gait belt you show when he uses the bathroom. It seems impossible to help him with personal care if we use the slings the hoyer lift companies recommend... looks like the straps will get in the way, but will try the Posey one you listed. Thanks for a great video!
