How I Knit 1x1 Rib Faster as a Continental Knitter

Welcome to The Blue Mouse Knits! In this video I will be demonstrating how I knit 1x1 rib faster as a continental knitter, this is more of an example vs a traditional tutorial. You may already be familiar with this method, or use it yourself, but just in case you haven't seen it before I think this method is great for anything involving alternating knits and purls often. I not only find this method faster, but it also gives me less wrist pain and feels more enjoyable to knit for longer periods of time.

I had such a hard time learning to knit until I found out how to knit continental. I'd been crocheting for over 40 years, so this seemed to be much more natural to me than the English throwing method. Now, when I'm doing something like a rib, I kind of get panicked at the end of the row because I realized I hadn't been paying attention. But when I check, I've done it perfectly. lol

I just use my right hand needle to scoop the yarn forwards…. I definitely want to try this technique though

Always glad to see your presence on utube. I have a question; does your one by one rib ever start to lean one way or the other? I’m knitting a 1 x 1 rib mens hat and the longer I knit the more the rubbing leans to the left??? Thank you in advance Diane

Hi Diane, my ribbing doesn’t do that but I vaguely remember it happening when I was a newer knitter. It may be a tension issue, like maybe you are knitting tighter than you’re purling and it’s causing it to lean. Its probably something that’s fixable with blocking, I bet you could straighten it out with pins while blocking

I have only ever knitted in the American method, but I have wrist issues and have wondering if learning continental style might help 🤔

It's possible it could help, might be worth knitting a swatch with continental to see if it helps at all. I also have wrist pain and find lots of stretching breaks and doing hammer curls with a light weight helps a ton. The light weight lifting exercises seem counter intuitive but make all the difference for my wrist pain.
