I knit the stitches directly from the cable needle.

That’s a very fast option, good if your cable needle is the same size as your knitting needle :)

I just use double pointed needles as my cable needle. no need buy something extra if you already have double pointed needles

Is the return just reg knits across and then cable the next side again?

Hi, most of the time when knitting flat you will purl these stitches on the back side and knit them on the front. There are usually some plain stockinette rows between each cable row too. Hope that helps!
