Need some recommendations for reading for pleasure! Too many non-fiction books on my bookshelves. Our culture encourages us to always strive to “improve “ ourselves which also can lead to anxiety and a feeling that there’s something wrong with us as we are.

It depends what you like, a good old fashioned murder mystery or a Stevenson novel always takes me places :-)

Ohmygosh I could not agree more! 🙌The self-improvement culture can be very unhealthy when taken to an extreme and our culture tends to glorify it. I have my favorite fiction reads on my website! helenawoods.com/favorites I adore anything and everything by Colm Tóibín, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Patti Smith. The Signature of All Things is my favorite fiction book of all time. Elizabeth Gilbert's short stories are incredible and so underrated. Check out Pilgrims and Stern Men. Time Traveling Wife is also great - could reread it a hundred times and it never gets old. Audrey Niffenegger's tone and writing style is so cozy and comforting!

I'm experimenting with taking more time to do mundane things, like doing the dishes or cooking. Also started taking morning walks first thing in the morning, which I really enjoy! Still a beginner on this path. I have a tendency to want to push the limit, be efficient, speed things up. But I'm now experimenting with doing the opposite: do less, do it more slowly, but do it well.

*"without boredom, creativity has no space to drop in"* YES! I've had this exact thought so many times. Beautiful video and wise thoughts, this resonated with me so much. I watched your video on reducing social media from a wee while back, and I found it so helpful. Even this last week or two I've noticed such a wonderful improvement in my mental health and increased abundance in my creativity since cutting down on social media. On a side note, I'd love to see a video on your creative process, how you get inspiration, and how you capture such beautiful videography shots. Big hugs from Scotland 🤗🌿

Heart of Kentucky. Simple Joys. When I use to sew quilt art by hand, hours and hours a day, new music compositions would pop into my head, even though I wasn't thinking one thought. I would have to get up to go to one of my instruments, to play it. I also had much poetry, and ponderings to write down, that also popped into my head, and they ended up in my homemade books. They say, women can multitask. At the same time, I see what you are talking about, to focus on one thing at a time. I'll listen to this video, over and over. Katie.

I have just begun my exploration of slow living. This video is so helpful in understanding the essential steps to develop a mindset to' being' rather and 'doing'. I think the introduction of the fact that you still need to work is valuable, too many of the videos I have seen do not mention that 'bills have to be paid'. Personally I too have found dumping social media has been one of the best things I have done.

@@helenawoods It’s a really good style! ...Incidentally, I’m 53, and currently looking after a cattle farm in the Scottish Highlands as a live-in volunteer. (I used to be a journalist and university lecturer, then an education advisor... so this is a totally different way of life for me. And one that really enables me to take pleasure in the simple joys!) The farmer, who is 66, is in the process of moving to France from the U.K. and has been over in France since the end of last year. He has a lot of stressful bureaucracy to deal with at the moment, trying to meet certain requirements in order to become resident in France and get permission to set up in business over there, made manifestly more complicated because of Brexit and lockdown. I emailed him one of your videos a few weeks ago, and he replied that the message really resonated, and that he was making sure he focused on the simple joys of the blossom on the apple tree in the garden, and the beauty of the old wooden beams he was using to renovate an outbuilding etc., in order to ensure that he is making the most of life whilst he is alone, in lockdown, waiting for the wheels of French bureaucracy to turn. I just wanted to tell you this so that you can see how your message, so beautifully communicated via your sumptuous videos, resonates with people of all ages, all over the world. Thank you for all the effort you put into creating the content you are uploading for viewers. It is really appreciated.
