It warms my heart to see all the WFPB people putting the word out, for many years it seemed we where alone. At our home we started The McDougall Plan after coming across a copy of it in 1993. I read that book cover to cover twice when I first got it, have refereed to it hundreds of times over the years. My wife and I cleaned out the cupboards and fridge and never looked back. My weight went from 363lbs to 235lbs in about eight months. I am currently 205lbs and have been this weight for about twenty five years. Our son has been WFPB his entire life and he introduced this lifestyle to his wife. This lifestyle offers you nothing but good health and costs absolutely nothing. People who are WFPB are not trying to outlive anyone, the goal is to live disease free and as functional as possible into old age, that's it. The fact that it is good for the planet and animals is an amazing added bonus. Thank you Kiki for being a voice, big hugs and love from Canada!!!

I have been on the Starch Solution starting at age 48 and for 5 years now. I started to lower my serum cholesterol which was 210 mg/dl (>199 is high) and it dropped to 125 (ideal). That has stayed fine and I don't get it checked any longer because I stay strict on the diet. My weight dropped from 193 pounds to 140. It's been up and down since but never above 153 and currently 145. My blood pressure is 115/85 as measured giving blood the other day. It is usually around that and I don't worry but I exercise more for it. Also, with doctor supervision my blood pressure medication was removed 5 years ago. Also, I had high resting heart rate controlled by same medication, atenolol, a beta blocker. Last I checked my resting heart rate was 70 beats per minute and that's about average. The best word to describe Starch Solution is 'freedom'. I am free from the specter of heart problems or of need for statins or blood pressure meds for the rest of my life. I am free from being out of breath walking a bit or climbing stairs. I am free from need to lose weight only to gain it back over and over. I weigh less than I did in high school.

Yes Kiki! So glad you addressed the fear factor of going from a low carb high fat diet to a high carb low fat way of eating! Being on that for 4+ years, I can attest to the paralyzing fear when wanting to switch... especially when the scale and your waistline starts to move up when switching. I ran back too many times to count but once I just made the commitment to give it more time, the weight came off again and I could breathe a sigh of relief. It was not an immediate good experience for me as I didn't need my weight to go down but also wasn't happy to see it go up and my body had been used to burning different fuel so the tummy issues were serious. Legumes upset me(even though I LOVE them) even the carbs from potatoes made me feel sick for a while but in time my body adjusted and I was able to give this way of eating a fair chance. Don't overlook the healing time that our bodies need before they can function properly. Eating a more colorful diet can't be a bad thing! I have to say though it's still crazy to me how little (volume wise) I needed to feel full and how much I need now... just can't get the idea out of my head that I'm over eat!. Not true I know!🤣❤

I am 58, Italian, and have been on the low carb diet and went to the gym as well, got high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and cholesterol. After a trip to the emergency room, eating a diet like this (low sodium more so than fat), is dropping the weight off and improving my health. In 3 weeks I have dropped a size already and feel amazing (with a 30-50 min walk each day).Low carb isn't for everyone.

This was so incredibly helpful to me. I’ve been keto for a number of years, combined with binge eating, then keto and then binging. It’s been like that for around six years now and I’m at rock bottom. I have a genuine fear of carbs! I’m seriously heavy at over 400+ and I am *ready* to embrace a whole new lifestyle. I think it was the Universe that lead me to you. I had to have a full hysterectomy at 35 and my health is declining. Whilst I have excellent blood pressure, excellent sugar levels and excellent cholesterol, I have fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. I am constantly exhausted and it’s having a huge affect on my life. I don’t go out, heck, I even get my weekly shopping delivered! It’s my time and I am incredibly grateful to you for sharing your experiences, your links and I’m going to have a look at your cookbook (I hope it’s available in the UK?!?) I’m excited but a little nervous to completely overhaul my life, dietary wise, mentally and after years and years, I’m going to return to the mat and practice yoga again. Thank You so, so, so much! You’ve given me so much hope and “lit the fuse” for me to start. Thank You 🙏🏻 💗 😊

I'm sure it will help you! I don't usually follow the starch solution but I am vegan but that had recently changed as I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, otherwise totally healthy, but was very stressed and definitely eating junk and not vegetables. Anyway... I started a program for rheumatoid arthritis, didn't take any drugs and after 6 weeks I have barely any symptoms. The diet is very similar to starch solution. Vegan, LOTS of veg, whole foods only, no fats to start with, it's a slow process of reintroduction but fats are only reintroduced from the 8th week or so. Hope this helps give you some hope!

@@mallymakings2853 Dr McDougall has mentioned potatoes reducing arthritis symptoms. I had an ex with arthritis. While we were together for several years, he had switched to eating vegan and potatoes being a staple in his diet. He had zero arthritis pain and was off his arthritis meds for the first time in his life. At over 400lbs, you'll lose weight quickly with a vegan diet. I lost 40lbs with zero exercise. Vegan diet also saved me from ending up in the hospital and needing emergency surgery when I started having gallbladder issues. I almost died in my 20s from gallbladder, and it completely reversed my inflammation significantly in weeks.

I started at the same weight as you too. Suffered with pcos for years and lots of hair loss and cystic acne. I do high carb low sugar(mostly no added sugar), and I do still use avocado oil, coconut oil and olive oil (as a drizzle), as I had hair loss issues with no oil entirely. But for me cooking with even just a tsp of coconut oil helped my hair growth so much and I still lost the weight. Love your content however and I do think some people are more sensitive to even healthy fats whereas others need some amount of fat for balance. As long as it’s clean and vegan it’s good

Last August I started a low to no carb high fat diet! I lost 20 lbs. but I got completely burned out on it! I felt terrible! I couldn’t keep eating that way. Then in February we took a trip to Panama and stayed with friends who follow a Whole Foods plant based diet and we loved it! We immediately felt the difference. I had my blood work done about two months later and all of my levels were down! Way down! My LDL was lower than the normal range of low. My overall cholesterol dropped 30 points! It was so fun to see it working! However recently I’ve stated gaining weight back! I’ve gained almost 10 lbs and I am frustrated! I feel like I’m doing something wrong. I got a little off track when our grandkids came to stay with us. So we are getting back on track! I have made several of your meals and they have all been delicious! Our journey continues!

@@countdownsailing2322 yeah I think that’s been my problem as well. I don’t even feel like I’ve eaten loads, just more than usual, and I am gaining weight. I think it’s because with keto/low carb, you’re fat adapted. And if you switch to carbs, it confuses the body. And lately not only have I been eating high fat keto foods, I’ve also been “cheating” and eating higher carbs. It makes sense that the body burns fat OR carbs, not both at same time. So if we make the switch to high carb, we have to do low fat like KiKi does. I am scared of the weight I’ll gain in the beginning. But I’m going to also try to exercise more, hoping that will help. Keep calories lower at first and burn them when you can. This is me thinking out loud, trying to figure out what to do lol I really want to give my body all the nutrients it needs and I feel like I am missing them because I’m not eating all the fruits and veggies. I’m really scared to gain the weight back in the beginning of switching off keto. I was thinking I’d make the switch at the end of the summer as to not gain the weight during swimsuit season 😒

The initial weight you are most likely going to end up gaining, is just going to be water weight. Carbs refill glycogen stores in the body, and also retain water. If your weight goes up 10-15lbs quickly, it's just water, and totally normal and natural process.

It sounds very intriguing to me, will try this! Low carb only worked temporary for me as well, so your approach may be the solution for me too! Q: somebody mentioned in a former comment fish taccos. But fish is not plant based as far as i know..... how does this comes together? Thankhyou for clarifying this for me 😊🙏🌞

I've been eating plant-based for over 2 weeks - all home made pesto sauces, smoothies, chickpea/hummous salads and dips, no dairy, and the only meat I've had was fish in a home-made curry. I haven't even lost 100g/3.5oz. My weight is literally the exact same as it was 3 weeks ago when I was eating take-away and sugar every day. What am I doing wrong?

To anyone thinking about doing the same to shed weight: 1. One size does not fit all; 2. Be careful to go onto deficiencies; 3. Check your glucose tolerance before eating many cereals and starches; 4. Maybe the reason you're overweight isn't eating meat, maybe it is following a diet full or sugar, refined flours, constant snacking, hydrogenated seed oils and overall junk food. Maybe that's why plant based diets work this much for losing weight. But don't put the animal protein to blame when you see success with it, think what diet you had before going plant based.

Agree on starch tolerance. You can do the AMY-1gene Saliva test for carb/starch tolerance. The range is 1 to 9. 9 being able to tolerate, 1 low tolerance.

I agree with your post. But, I’ve found out the hard way, spending years listening to a one size fits all approach with everyone pushing protein , that eating too much animal protein, even lean protein, adds a lot of weight on me and bulks me up. Metabolically, everyone is different. Many can lose with animal protein, others can not.

Just bought your book and going to try this way as I eat vegan anyhow but not great with beans, lentils so get mine from seeds (amaranth, groats, buckwheat, quinoa)… bit apprehensive with carbs as always been low carb but since going fully vegan I’m realising I have to go the other way as I’m not prepared to eat meat anymore. Potatoes will be very interesting as not had in years as I used to bloat really bad… fingers crossed this is successful for me… do you ever just eat fruit as a meal the odd times? Roughly (just to guide at the beginning) how much fat & protein per day. Would greatly appreciate a reply…💗

This fear of carbs fad has got to go! The Keto craze confuses me because there's no nutrition in excessive oil/fat. I tried that diet to see if I felt better, but nope. Got gallstones and GERD. Yuck. Now I'm trying to undo the damage of HFLC. I love my veg, meat, fish but eliminated extra fats & processed food. If Keto works for some, great, but we're not all built the same. This was very inspiring, thank you!

I've been vegan for 8 years. Last year I went grain free, and then keto, and IF ...... I'm so tired of nothing working and I'm so sad I can't seem to lose the baby weight from being pregnant with my now four year old. I had eating disorders my whole life and I get so frustrated with doing the right thing not working. Does that make sense? I need to lose 40 lbs. I'm stuck and I'm so frustrated it makes me depressed.

Hard exercise is not necessary. It raises cortisol levels which can contribute to hair loss and belly fat. Walking, weight lifting, and yoga or pilates are enough.

I love everything that you do. Iv been following your recipes. But there’s a problem that I can’t seem to find the answer to. Food is. Going in but not coming out, without help, that sucks I want to keep doing the program. I know sorry everyone to much information. I bought the FITB to track any suggestions on how to enter the food it’s a big hassle. The fat & sugar intake for the day really surprises you I try to buy the lowest in fat & sugar. Sorry everyone I’m on the same journey as you. It’s my middle that I want gone to look fantastic like you Kiki.

Maybe look up fiber that's good for constipation and slowly add in more of those fiber foods throughout the day. Slowly because adding too much fiber at once can cause upset stomach. Body has to get use to it.

How do you make sure you get enough calcium rich foods on this diet? I have osteoporosis. I can't have soy...
@PlantifulKiki
@PlantifulKiki 2 жыл бұрын
Dr Neal Barnard actually has videos on this, but in essence making sure to eat lots of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and kale, and other greens that are high in calcium. Not eating meat and dairy that are acid forming and pull calcium from the body is important. Dr. Mcdougall writes about this in his book "The Starch Solution"
