Just lost my job few days ago...and yes, I was one of those who identified with their work and treated colleagues as my second family...it struck me, caught me surprised, off guard, unprepared...I'm still going through the emotional roller coaster...very grateful for the support I'm getting from friends and family members who experienced a similar life changing event...I bookmarked this video, really a well done, sincerely presented content which I will use for sure on my new path...

For me it was the day after my birthday. I identified with my job, it was a dream job, I had almost full autonomy of how I did my job, it was hybrid and I loved my team members. I am also the sole provider for my family. My manager at the time barely knew about my accomplishments due to several restructurings of the organization, and thus he was clueless about what I was really about and what value I added, and thus it was probably easy to let me go.

Summary: When you lose your job and what you are, you should find your why. Here is how: 1. Japansese concept Iki-gai (Life worth meaning) 2. Three Takeaways from Iki-Gai - Fire, Fuel, Flare 3. Fire - What sparks joy in you, what makes you lose the concept of time. It could be impractical like Gardening but still there is something in it like nurturing could be your fire. 4. Fuel - What keeps you going, your values or easily what you want other people to see you as. Ex: Knowledgable. Strong etc 5. Flare - The tools and skills you acquired over the years 6. Get all 3 of those in one sentences and then get all 3 sentences into just one sentence and that is your WHY? 7. Challenge yourself and ask yourself these questions instead of waiting for life to gift you your why, find it yourself. Leave a like if this comment helped you.

This makes me so appreciate that I have never derived my self worth from work. I have a career, some would say a pretty decent corporate career. But i have never lost sight of the fact that it is actually meaningless work. I lost a sibling young and having that kind of up close and personal experience of how fragile life is reinforced for me, forever, what does and does not matter. I've lost several jobs in the past. Never a great experience but not life and death.

Why are people listening to a ted talk by a woman that lost her job like she isn’t the best of examples to be doing a ted talk find someone who has been doing a job for a long time and get them to do a ted talk makes more sense.

Yeah pretty much and in this world we value men and women who have been successful and not lost a job and then got asked to do a ted talk it’s like they are scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point.

success doesn’t come without failure. This talk is about resilience. They likely invited her because she is now successful but she chose to reflect on a time when she thought she had lost it all. Some of the main qualities of a Ted Talk according to the bestseller public speaking guide “Talk Like Ted” are vulnerability, storytelling, passion and authenticity. Plus keep in mind TEDx is independent from the official TED organization which only organize the TED Talks on their own channel.
