You’re not alone, I’m constantly struggling with my weight with type 1 and what I want to look like. It’s a double edge sword because better control can actually lead to being a little heavier. But rest assure that our health is most important no matter what. What I’ve tried to learn is to love myself regardless and do what makes me feel good.

Agreed. It's unreal. I'm 3 weeks into basically a keto diet. Greek yogurt, water, protein crazy. I've lost 7 pounds and there it stops. The worst part is I've not done the things that "make" you fat. I don't over eat and I'm moderately active. The gym didn't work for me. I am nuts about my sugars! I can't stand being over 140ish. The gym always required sugar. Before after or during. Tried the light Gatorade with certainly gross chemicals and still always needed a sugary one. Weights, cardio it was all the same.

@@Ohios1Cheesehead ahhh Im sorry. Its so frustrating. I also went on a keto diet and lost only 3kg in 2 months.... but I was literally starving. I was probably eating only a few hundred caloriea, and yet I barely lost weight. I started eating a bit more because I was so hungry, and gained 4 kg😢😢 i am embarressed about my big tummy, and there seems to be nothing I can do about it

Trying to have tighter control can actually pack on more weight because we are doing what’s necessary to live a longer life even if that may mean we have to eat a little more. As a diabetic since the age of 3, 14, close to 15 years now, I’ve always gained and lost and gained and lost weight. More recently, prior to COVID, I took fitness very seriously and was in the best shape of my life as I was hitting the gym almost everyday for cardio or weights. Fast forward 6 months, I’m in the worst shape of my life, and without the gyms being open I don’t know what to do. I know I’m capable of bettering myself but it just seems so hard with COVID and the lazy person I’ve become over quarantine. It is certainly different staying in shape being a type 1.

@@hastensavoir7782that is one of the most common symptoms of diabetes if it hasn’t been discovered or treated or if it is severely uncontrolled, for example, my parents suspected it because I droped so much weight, I was only nine, but then, after I started to use insulin and treated it, I started gaining more weight and became chubby after I turned 14, and now, 19, its really hard to drop weight, I thought the cause of my weight gain was insulin, so I stopped using it, dropped 3 kg in 2 weeks, but it wasn’t because I stopped using insulin, It was because I was going through ketoacidosis due to NOT using insuline, I almost died

I agree completely. Exactly as you said, it's a journey and consistency and patience are the key. I'm Type 2 and have lost just over 60 lbs. in the past year. A fellow Jacobs😊 I'm also type 1. My weights been pretty plateaued until covid and I ballooned from 120 to 170. I'm finally in a good safe headspace to take charge of my health. I wanna feel strong body wise. I dont really feel at home in my body, trying to give it grace. I've been doing small changes. My biggest issue is the highs and lows of exercise and then binging the sugar when I'm low. The lows at night freak me out and it's a huge de-motivator to workout. I've been doing more veggies fruits and proteins with a bit of reduction of carbs (def no where near low carb) water is hard but I do feel better when I'm hydrated and trying to remind myself that. Looking forward to watching your other videos.

I COMPLETELY feel you. I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for 23 years. I tried everything. No matter what I would do I would eat less but then doing something physical my blood sugars would tank. So like you said you stuff your face with anything in sight. Protein before I work out and after REALLY helped me control my blood sugars during working out. I Also learned the more I focused on my blood sugars. The weight started falling off because I wouldn’t have to eat as much from going low. Thanks for the advice and for being a solid example for us type 1 diabetics! We kick A!

Im learning that if you dont eat carbs, you DONT need insulin. So I've changed my diet and am losing weight by eating salad, meats, and meals that have SIGNIFICANTLY lessened carbs by brands like Birch Benders or Real Good. Anything keto will probably have 3 to 8 Net carbs for anything from cupcakes to food bowls. Light Juices also seem way better especially for low bg, with only 9 carbs per 8 oz. Bottom line, your dependency on insulin is based on carb consumption, however your weight does also. Change the diet AND workout or walk, and I PROMISE your goal will happen.

It's really interesting how so many diabetics vary in their diets. I also struggle with an unhealthy relationship with food even though I am skinny myself. I lost a lot of weight because I cut back on a lot of carbs, almost to the point of keto. But recently I've been hearing about how being so restrictive and eating little to no carbs and high fat would do damage to my body and it isn't attainable in the long run. I've been allowing some carbs back but it has to be carbs from fruits, veggies, and legumes. I know I gain a lot of weight eating a lot of breads, rice, pasta, and tortillas. Also some stuff that are low in carbs are very high in fats and calories which can screw up cholesterol levels and harm the body. I've been trying to eat a little more carbs that are healthy. I'm staying home alot I'm upping my workout regimen and eating a lot more but a lot more veggies. I'm always scared about complications in the future like kidney failure and gaining back all the weight I lost but what I should focus on is how healthy I'm eating. I don't buy scales because I know I will be very obsessed with numbers. My sugars have always been great and with my Dexcom I can have better control.

I was on a Medtronic insulin pump for all 3 and used CGM with the last 2. Don't let Diabetes scare you away from trying/doing anything you dream of. Take good care of you, and all things are possible. (25 years with Type 1, I've been through alot) Great luck to you

@@Wandafully_Wanda Hey, thank you for your reply :). I actually already lost 6 kgs, because just because of this video I started to go to a gym and lift weights (like not very heavy, but several times). We have almost lockdown in the Czech Republic now, so the gyms and fitness centers are closed, but my friend has a "gym" in his basement, so I can exercise there (still now it is way less than what it was in September and the second half of August). I am happy you have the Medtronic pump - I will go to the hospital on Monday for it and hopefully, I will stop having hypoglycemias. Can I ask you, what is the average sugar level you have with the pump? I have usually like 7 or 8, but it would be great to have 5 or 6 without having low sugar levels (and after usually higher ones like up to 13 mmol/l)

@@ladazadranska143 when it came to my A1C while pregnant, I was down to a 6-7. No matter what I ate/did I would go low almost every other day. Good luck on your journey.

I have type 1 diabetes but also rheumatoid arthritis, ankylising spondylitis and fibromyalgia. I take long term steroids and have just had my knee replaced. Exercise is anywhere between very different and completely impossible so the last thing I'm going to waste money on is a gym membership. I know it will sound bad, but if type 1 is the only weight issue you have out there, you are doing well. You just have to adjust insulin carefully and keep in touch with your care team. I would like to point out that if your blood sugars are high, you don't have enough insulin and if you do cardio your body will release glucagon without insulin to counteract it and your blood sugars could go through the roof. Don't know about the States but in the UK the advice would be don't exercise with blood sugars higher than 16 mmol/L.

It really has little to do with eating too much in many cases, If you have bad control you will be skinny due to ketone acidosis which is bad, if your control is too good you will get fat due to insulin telling the body to produce fat, working out and eating low carb so you only use a little insulin is the only way to lose weight and still be healthy for a type 1. People that have no clue about diabetes always try to say eat less and you will lose weight but that is not how it works for us unfortunately.

I’ve found I need to take insulin if my sugars high before working out but I need to keep an energy drink as the hour after my workout I will often drop low. Basically if my sugar is under 180 pre workout no insulin and if it is I take usually 1 less unit than normal with my correction shot. I also keep track of my weight because I’ve been using a calorie tracker that made me realize how much I’m eating and I was also eating a lot when I wasn’t really that hungry. As I lose weight the amount of calories I burn just to stay alive and move my weight around have also decreased so in my case tracking my weight is important and is helping me in this long weight lost journey.(started august 23rd 2021 at 261lbs and I’m now down to 246.4lbs as of oct 11 2021, hoping to hit 215 by July of 2022 and my ultimate goal of 185 probably within 2 years after that as I expect my weight loss to start and really slow down past 215.

always change your injection sites! never use the same over and over again. If you do so, you will get scar tissue on this site, which will influence the effect and time the insulin has - so you will get a less predictable and less stable blood sugar. Also you get the bumps which will make you look fatter than you are. So always change the injection site.

I can't find a video for weight gain it's always how to lose weight. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about 2 months ago. Before I was 60 kg and I am 5'5 in height but I lost so much weight because of diabetes when I went to the doctor I was 49 kgs. But after I was put on insulin I gained weight but only like 2 or 3 kgs. My recent weight was 51 something and i now think I'm at 52 but it seems like I'm stuck at 52. My bmi may now be normal but visually I look so underweight and I want to get back to my old weight which is at 60 kg. They say that once type 1 diabetics are put on insulin they will go back to their old weight but mine is not. Pls someone help me. I would love to hear some tips and advice.

How do carb for a smoothie? I've only been diagnosed for a little under 4 years and I still haven't figured out how to inject for carb-y liquids. Any advice?

I buy frozen fruits (besides bananas) and I portion and measure the ingredients I'm putting in. It's also helpful to opt for things like unsweetened soy milk and organic / plant based protein powder. The sugar from the fruits does absorb quickly so I try to remember to bolus before I go to make it.

What I experienced: I have the feeling i need 3x to 4× more time to lose weight than a person without diabetes. It needs longer and you need to be patient...😅

Definitely not. 30-50 carbs a day is low carb. Read dr. Bernstein’s book “the diabetes solution”
