Chinese characters don't convey a lof of the spoken Chinese languages well. A hangul like alphabet would be easy for everyone to be literate no matter what Chinese language u speak. (Evidently Hangul was created with extra letters that fit the sounds of Middle Chinese, as loan words from Middle Chinese were still in use by Korea)

Hey Grace! I'm currently learning Canto, and am learning the traditional characters through a book called Remembering Traditional Hanzi Bk. 1 by James Heisig. It's an amazing way to remember characters, and their stroke order. I also found an Anki deck that has all the characters in it :)

writing Traditional Chinese is good if you want to communicate with Hong Konger's and Taiwanese Chinese friends. Writing Simplified Chinese in these 2 regions is frowned upon except in Singapore and Mainland China

I'm old school, but writing/reading are learned hand in hand. Here I mean physical writing with a pencil or pen. You can just try to practice a character a day, then progress to a line of a song, then a verse. Practicing the strokes helps you understand the deeper meaning of the characters by recomposing them, and condition the process into your mind. It's then much easier for you to relate characters and phrases, their related meanings, and their pronunciations.

Also, I think knowing how to write sort of helps you read faster 🤔 at the end of the day, all you want to achieve is to be as familiar with the words as possible. Knowing how to write will draw your attention on the very details of different words and help you understand how to tell words apart.

It's good to hear that you are interested in Trad. Chinese characters. In Chinese countries we start learning the characters by reading and writing simple one in the kindergarten, just like how you learn how to write ABC. So of course if you have more than enough time then you should learn how to write characters which helps you memorise them. But I believe you don't since your school life is busy. IMO I think that you can try to read more interesting materials in Trad. Chinese and use translator/ dictionary to convert them into Simp. Chinese to help you understand and memorise the characters. As you know how to speak some Cantonese, typing Chinese characters by jyutping input method may be another good approach for you to connect the sound of the character to its look. Maybe it's more practical for you to learn how to type Chinese words than write. Chinese character is like a painting. The best way to memorize "a painting" is by drawing it over and over again. So learning how to write definitely helps reading Chinese.

Written Chinese is basically the evolution and modern standardization of Middle Chinese. Before only the rich and upper class who could afford an education (usually boys too) would learn to read and write in this literary Chinese while everyone else spoke their own Chinese language. After the May 4th event in China where students protested back in 1904 I believe, they changed the Middle Chinese writing that didn't reflect any of the current living Chinese languages to reflect Mandarin grammar. Thus this concept was similar to students who learned Latin despite speaking other Latin languages at the time like, Spanish, Catalan, French etc. The only other Chinese language that has a government supported script is Taiwan where Taigi (Taiwanese Hokkien) has an official standard different from Mandarin/Chinese characters. Hong Kong never had this happen because of the handover and the government mandate of a "trilingual, biliterate city" (literate in English and Chinese/Mandarin). There ARE published works like "Le Petit Prince" which is in actual written Cantonese which you could check out.

Written Cantonese isn't the same thing as Written Mandarin btw. In formal situations, Cantonese speakers would write in Standard Written Chinese. I recommend checking out the Wikipedia article for written vernacular Cantonese en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Written_Cantonese

@@rubensalsa8128 A Cantonese newspaper may use traditional characters but can be pretty indecipherable to a non-Cantonese reader. E.g. Sing Tao (Cantonese) vs World Journal (non-Cantonese). Everyone learns the formal way of writing but if you're trying to read some tabloid stuff you'll need to know Cantonese to read a Cantonese rag.

Perhaps you can start with the characters you'll prolly see very often. Eg. 我(I), 你(You), 他/她(He/She). Also numbers: 一二三四五六七八九十 (basically one to ten)

Hi grace, glad you are learning Cantonese. Just curious, do you happen to know mandarin too? I also noticed one of the biggest problems is that sometimes they are written colloquially and sometimes they are written in official chinese ( which makes more sense when it’s spoken in mandarin)

It's very possible to learn how to speak a language without ever having learned how to read or write in it (there are English native speakers who are illiterate, but they can talk to you. 🙃) I'm currently going over kanji for Japanese, and I use Wani Kani's method. Rather than learning strokes, you learn the "parts" or radicals and then "build" it: ▪田 + 心 = 思 ▪口 + 玉 = 国 So I'm using this same method for traditional and simplified characters in Mandarin. Maybe you can use it for Cantonese as well? For reading: find things at your level and look for materials that are interesting to you. It's obvious, but easy to forget. 😅 Shows are great because they usually have subs. I pick up new vocab that way. I screenshot, then look up the words later and listen again while reading the subs.

learning the radicals are much easier than learning strokes because all the radicals have their own meanings,eg:食(eat),the words like 飯/餓/飽 (rice/hungry/full),you can see them related to eating or food,it is super easy for you to learn the traditional characters of chinese when you understand the meanings and structures of each radicals

You should try to use your skills in simplified chinese to memorize the characters. For example, 经济　経済，护士 護士，让 譲, 龙 龍, etc... By using words you already know, you'll remember the characters better (because essentially, they're the same characters, their radicals as just been simplified).

Mandarin is the resulted of foreign invasion and should have never been used as the official language. Mandarin deleted many consonants that was hard for the northern invaders to pronounce. This is why Grace you are so special. Your pronunciation is very good. Cantonese is directly from Han Chinese 1000 years earlier than Mandarin. Much closer to ancient Chinese, as is traditional characters.

Mandarin is a bastardized chinese by Northern foreign invaders like Ganghis Kan. Cantonese is 1000 years older directly from Han Chinese. Classic Chinese Poetry is clearly better in Cantonese and traditional characters are much more meaningful.
