This video is very useful for people that are learning cantonese. Most people that learning cantonese has hard time keeping the words in the right tone like you point it out in the video. Maybe you can make a video about 7:43 that will be interesting.

That’s a great way to explain how to use tones from a foreigner’s point of view. I guess most people usually use their own native language as a base to apply on other languages. So from an English speaker’s point of view, it would be logical to change the tone to express a different emotion. For a language like Cantonese, you can’t change the tone at all, so adding the extra word at the end to express the emotion is important.

Grace, my dad linked me your channel a few weeks ago and I have been LOVING your content. I’m a Chinese-Australian born in HK and raised in Aus. I’m in my early 20s and recently left my hometown for work. Trying to reconnect with my language as I’m in a small country town that doesn’t have many POC - and therefore no native Canto speakers. Your channel has been an amazing resource for me to engage with my roots/language and also super entertaining. You have such a bright personality. I know we’d get along like a house on fire if I were to ever come to London. Keep it up Grace! - Zoe

It's easier to think them in music keys. Like the 6 tones in Cantonese are "la sol fa do fa mi", some speak them in C major, some speak in G major. 😂

Guresu this is definitely the best explanation of tones. I always thought the same about vocal range because when I training with Anki's deck that have audio file sometime my voice is different from the example, but I believe my tones is also right. Also I believe tones should be practiced as relax as possible, by not exaggerating it too much since you'll sound like robot.

Grace, your video advice is spot on. Love the passion you have for language especially how difficult Cantonese can be. We have typically 6 tones but depending on the situation sometimes you can veer into an "in between" tone or another tone entirely. I'm American that speaks fluent Cantonese but more Guangzhou style so a bit different than the HK style you've been speaking so you've actually taught me some phrases to use with HK people. Love this channel of yours. Keep it up girl!!!

Agreed with you that tone is very difficult to learn. Even I'm a Cantonese speaker in Hongkong, I also encounter difficulties to learn tones of Mandarin

An angle is, put it in musical notes, 1-2-3-4-5-6 are me-do/re-do-so-ti/do-ti. 你做緊乜嘢 is do-ti-do/re-me-do.

I'm a native mandarin speaker, this opinion is refreshing to me. I never thought the pitch could get in the way. I only know a little cantoness, but I always feel people speak louder when in cantoness...
