Another Aperture product you could try building would be a laser emitter along with a laser catcher. It could be the same size as your button or bigger/smaller. Have the laser emitter fire a red laser beam, and a laser catcher that will detect it (maybe with a sensor) acting like the one in game (makes a sound and spins the outer ring) if it's not too hard (it also has a yellow light when activated and a blue light when idle)

6:11 Here's a trick to ditch sanding. Make the parts one thickness of styrene smaller on all faces, then glue styrene bits that you have cut with your CNC. For glue, use the rubber glue that Loctite has (it's the black one). It's thin, very strong, and because it's for rubber, it's actually very stable long term (i discovered when i repaired my washing machine and needed a glue that could glue the gasket that held my water temp sensor (nothing else worked because of the heat of the water). It's been glued on for nearly 8 years now and that's through a near constant cycle of hot-cold, if that's not a resume for a good glue, especially since it's stainless + rubber, dunno what could be. For all the corners, i woudn't bother with making them flush, that's when acrylic or body putty comes in, and a light sanding done with a tool that's 3D printed to have the right angle for the faces you sand is perfect. You'll have a styrene face, clean painting face in very little time. That's how i do it. Can you tell i hate sanding? :)

You can place a small cube inside the Companion Cube that says "no, no bones inside". This will be a reference to the popular theory. Which says that inside these cubes are human remains. It originated due to the fact that it needs to be burned, and not just destroyed by passing through the anti-expropriation field with it, so if it passes through the anti-expropriation field, the remains of people will fall out. I think that would be a cool reference.

Learning what not to do, is still learning :) I’ve been sort of obsessed with the companion cube since I learned of its existence, even before I had played the Portal games myself… I spend loads of time 3d modeling my own version, which is slightly different from the in-game version, the “bumpers” are a lot smaller so the overall shape comes closer to a “flatter faced” cube.. if that makes any sense… I made a 1cm squared pendant version that was 3d printed in a wax material and then casted (iirc) in sterling silver :) I’ve been wearing it for over a decade now :) Hopefully one day I’ll be able to make a bigger one, probably not full sized for practicality reasons, but still… Anyway… love the work you’re doing on the Portal projects!

No suggestions for uses, just wanted to say that: considering the weight and production expense of a full-scale cube, I feel like a 60%* scale version would make a good compromise. Now, I'm no engineer, and - realistically speaking - it's probably not going to bring the cost and weight down to 60% equally, but it might be more feasible (whilst also taking up less space. Not everybody has a workshop to store stuff in). * - (I say "60%" scale because I've used VR to experiment with finding a comfy scale for Portal cubes and - for me at least - 60% feels extremely comfortable to hold/wrap your arms around while still being bigger than your head. If anything, the comfort might make it less painful to carry).
