In case you really want to sound like Sonic The Hedgehog (specifically from the GENESIS era) remember to have some limitations on sounds the genesis sound chip has only the capabilities to reproduce 5 FM sounds (1 sound per track), 1 DAC (samples. again, 1 at a time) and 3 PSG (2 for square waves and 1 for white noise) trust me, this makes the process of making a sonic type song more fun

@@samduane Very good, I have an idea. the track in this vid sounds a lot like Green Hill, try making songs based off of other zones you like in the series. A great goal you could set is after at least 6 more tracks, make it a mod for one of the classic Sonic games to see how well it fits. I say 6 more bc 7 tracks and 7 Chaos Emeralds. I know there's also music for bosses, bonus stages and menus but I don't think those are as important.

As nice as soundfonts are, if we want to replicate the actual Genesis sound accurately, it's better to shoot for using a standalone Genesis chip or emulation of it. I use Genny 1.16 but its got its issues that a paid for alternative can usually get around, but still I would highly recommend Genny in this case since you can port instruments directly from the game VGMs you have downloaded and easily keep within the bounds of hardware limitations (5FM + 1DAC or 6FM, 2 Pulse, 1 Noise). There are other important things to consider when making Mega Drive music that "sounds like Sonic", and that's your choice of instruments. the sounds they made for themselves is a big part the identity of each game, as well as the musical style of each composer whose worked with the system. I'll avoid the music theory and stick to instrument choice, which you can look through by acquiring the VGMs and importing them into Genny. Masato Nakamura for example uses a very specific set of instruments programmed in to match the sound of his demos made beforehand, and pretty much the same few drums throughout all of Sonic 1-2. Mainly lots of Pop-like and pseudo-orchestral synths. Meanwhile Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic 3D blast use more low-key synthetic sounds and share the same drum set, with the exception of the Sonic 3 tracks made by the MJ team which use their own drum kit and a lot more unique samples. Spinball, being developed in the U.S., had its music made in GEMS, and uses a lot of pre-made instruments the GEMS program provided its composers, and thus its sound leans really heavy into sounding twangy and industrial with lots of heavy saw-like sounds. Mixing and matching these synths or altering them to get your own sorta sound is also a good way to play with the Genesis sound hardware and get comfortable creating with it the same way those composers did. You can also pretty easily replicate the sound of the Master System and Game Gear by sticking to the built-in 3 Pulse channels and 1 Noise channel. Is fun stuff :).

I think it sounds great, but the only issue that i feel is that it's somehow TOO happy. For example, since you were trying to replicate the sound of the Genesis era, If you listen to most of the songs, they're definitely very cheery, for example, Emerald Hill, Palmtree Panic Present JP, (Technically not Genesis) and Green Hill. They all sound very happy, but they still have certain elements of gloominess or sadness, in a way. For example, (again) the piano from Palmtree Panic, it gives off a sort of melancholic element to an otherwise lighthearted song. Just a tip for the next time that you try to make similar music, as most Genesis music doesn't sound as positive as this song does, with another example being Sky Chase from Sonic 2. Go listen to these songs and if you want to, (these are all just suggestions after all) build upon your style and use these examples and others for inspiration. Sorry for writing a paragraph, great work, and I just wanted to help you improve on your inspiration for your music. Looking forward to next time!

Or you can do what me and a friend did and source all the original uncompressed drum samples and use something like Dexed to get that YM2612 sound. There are even patches available for Dexed that recreate the original sounds from many Sega Genesis games. Trust me, it'll up your game even more. Great stuff though.
