How I Made My Sliding Barn Door | Rustic Modern

I made this barn door to solve a problem in my bedroom.
This door is very unique to my space. I made this sliding door because I have a glass door in my bedroom. We were lacking privacy, I installed tint on the window but at night that's no good. I didn't want to install curtains. I like the look of the sliding barn door. So I chose to hide the exterior door with a sliding barn door setup. Problem solved!

DIY Creators something to think of for the aluminum on the door. Ask a local shop to see ifthe can anodize it to give it a warmer look or even black to match the handle you made.

Great project. Love the way you make great use of the tools you have available - hand router inverted to use like a routing table, aluminum bars for guide rails, old school dowels for joining, etc. Proof that great projects don't require big dollar tools or full blown workshops. Keep up the great work!

Another excellent video. Watching you makes me miss my dad. He was just like you when he explained things. Very precise, but easy to follow when he did any of his projects. He would love your garage, especially since he had all original Shopsmith tools: drill press, lathe, table saw, etc., when they came out back in the 1970s. He could make anything, and often did for anyone who cared to ask.

Looks very nice great job! One thing though the strips you glued across the grain in the routed dado are gonna try to prevent the panels from moving with changing moisture. With all that cross grain you will have a ton of movement. I am betting the glue will fail, the panels will crack and/or the whole thing will curl up big time. Best to screw the strips in using slotted screwholes. Give it a couple humid summers and dry winters. Something's gotta give. I've seen many antique tables and box lids split this way.

What will most likely happen is when the timber shrinks in summer the door will curl in away from the wall where the braces are and in winter when it expands it will curl the other way. It shouldn't break because the inlaid strips will bend easily. You might just get away with it. If it was made from poplar or western red cedar that was properly kiln dried you'd probably have no issue because it's really stable wood.
@robertorr2878
@robertorr2878 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I kind of cringed with the two vertical cross grain glued up pieces . The aluminum angle on both sides will be fighting expansion/contraction as well. I give the guy credit for giving it hell though. Great idea making that handle.
@billrugg-easey4764
@billrugg-easey4764 7 жыл бұрын
C Spann I too cringed a little when I saw long grain being fixed across cross grain, when I was an apprentice you got your knuckles rapped if you so much as got a panel pin into a door panel so as to restrict seasonal movement. I would have fixed the braces in with a sliding dovetail, hard fixed with a screw in the centre and other board fixed by way of slots same for the angle. In my experience in the U.K. Soft wood will continue to shrink if used indoors for about a year. I'd like to know if this door does crack after a year or so, perhaps we can have a report on it, what I was thought may be wrong

Aloha, I like the door you made. Some places here have cinder block walls. This home where we live is wood with a concrete floor. It's a rental, but our landlord is open to improvements. The door in our home limits the area of use around it. I was also interested in the wall connector for the door because I like the idea of movable wall units like Clei furniture made for the NY housing display at the NY Museum in 2013. The walls move to make a small apartment usable throughout the day. I'm trying to make my limited space home functional & be strong enough when the big guys are here. We don't want things to break and want it very comfortable. I like your work. Thank you, Kai

Good stuff. Great tip about letting the boards dry out. I used tongue and groove boards so I was able to build my door in a day. It took about a week to stain and polyurethane it. Then another day to mount it. I used ratchet straps because I didn't have a clamp that large either.

Cool of course, but it's a door that closes the door? 🤔

I thought he explained his reasons very well. The existing windowed door lacked privacy for his bedroom, he didn't want curtains, and he had always wanted a barn door. I think he also gained a bit more security, and although this is my first time watching one of his videos, he seems to enjoy a new DIY challenge.

To clean up the glue in between the timber you could route out using a v groove bit.
