Thanks for answering many of my questions that I have not been able to get answered. I am finding it tough to get responses in my area. I found one BASS club but nobody responds to either phone messages or emails so I am not sure if it is still active. Unfortunate for me I live in the El Paso Texas area and there is limited water available. I have to travel to the east Texas area for any fishing (Sam Rayburn, Lake Fork etc.). Keep up the great videos, I am learning a lot.

I don't see myself fishin'in bass tournaments because saltwater is my love. But this is interesting and inspiring. Hopefully I'll be living near the water in the VA Beach area in a few weeks and I can start fishin' tournaments in the saltwater. Or at least I'll be able to fish again. The NC foothills have been torture for a Florida man who likes saltwater fishin'.

One of the things that I've seen in a lot of anglers. Even anglers who have no competitions to fish in. Except maybe amongst their buddies. And believe me, I've even seen fathers and sons fall out. Over who caught the most fish (that stuff they represent in 'A River Runs Through It', that is not made up). The common element I see, is that a lot of former professional and competitive athletes. Seem to take to angling very well. Why is that? I think that some people refuse to be spectators. They will always want to be participants.

I met a member of our fishing club in 2019. William was his name, and I'd never met him before then. He told me me his story and his involvement in the club over many years. William died in 2021, and that may have been. One of his last days out fishing. The club was established in 1960. William said he'd been fishing for a decade before that. Before there was a club. He became a club member for the next fifty years. And they gave him free membership from then on. He continued to fish for almost ten years after that. And by the time I met William in 2019, the fishery had become 'catch and release' only. However, he said he had kept one salmon. In order to put it on the wall. So that his children could have something from his fishing career. To remember him by. You come across this individuals in fishing, quite often. He's an example of a dozen people like that. I have personally met over the years. All of them with fascinating stories to tell about their lifetimes. And almost none of those stories were ever recorded.

By far the strangest thing I ever had to do. Was I took a group of brothers who had grown up. On the famous Castleconnell fishing river in Ireland. To take them fishing and explain some basics of salmon fishing to them. I thought about it afterwards. How strange that was. They had grown up a stone's throw away. From the business that started making tackle in 1848 in Castleconnell. A year after the worst year of the Irish potato famine. And by 1906, the grandson of that tackle business owner. Was competing in Central Park in New York city. At the time when Teddy Roosevelt was in the White House. Making a new world record for casting distance with a fishing rod. Of a hundred and fifty-two feet. By a century later on though. In 2019, I was teaching guys who grew up on the shorelines of that river (which had been altered to make hydro-electrical power). How to fish. It struck me when I thought about that. It should have been the other way around. William was part of that generation, very few of which were still lucky. To be able to fish the rivers. Before many of them were changed, altered and re-configured in some way. That meant the angling sport in those locations. Had eventually died out.

Ray Mears was this survival specialist on British television. One episode that Ray made I remember. He had traveled to some location, in which the native people had changed their 'way of life'. They had transitioned from the old ways to the new. And had lost a lot of knowledge in that process. The elders of the community still claimed they knew how to start a fire (Ray Mears had discovered this thing in many communities where he had visited). When the culture loses the ability to start a fire using survival methods. That is a big watershed and an indication of the overall loss of knowledge and experience. In that community. He recognized too, it was a sensitive subject. It had the ability to bring up all kinds of painful emotions. He wasn't loud or arrogant about it. He didn't laugh at their efforts. Rather he worked with them. Until eventually they figured out how to get a flame going. He explained, it was one of the most important things. For the self-confidence in that community. To know they had some things. They could depend on. Such as the ability to make fire. I thought about that. In 2019, when I was looking one angler. Who had three-quarters of a century worth of knowledge. And another group of guys, who had come from a once great fishing community. And had somehow lost their's.

I think that Brian is talking about a similar thing here. It's important to begin someplace. Whatever level it is at. It's only the beginning of a process. Of gaining knowledge and gaining understanding. That might extend over a very long time. And some of the most important lessons in fishing. That one can learn. Are those times in which it is possible to gain knowledge. That is available closeby and in one's own community. Knowledge that might have taken decades and event centuries to assemble. And strangely, if it is not maintained. It can be lost overnight. When I studied architecture too, there were examples of it. All over the world. The thing that comes to mind, were the wooden temple buildings in Japan. That had been re-built and re-constructed. Many times over the centuries. And indeed in Italy, I remember once the architects there. Talked about the restoration work on certain projects. Having started four or five hundred years ago. People were still living and working in the buildings. And there was knowledge on how to keep these places vibrant and relevant. Over many different centuries and time periods. And fishing is a lot like that. It's very much a thing, that is connected to a place.
