How I make music with iPad and Ableton Live: workflow overview

This is a demonstration of how I use the iPad as a MIDI sequencer, MIDI controller, sampler, looper, effects rack, mixer and DAW/recorder, in tandem with Ableton Live. I'll add links and other resources here in the description as they come to mind.

A ton of people have asked about audio routing on this interface. Yes, you can send 2 stereo (or 4 mono) channels from AUM back to the laptop. You have access to all 4 analog inputs on both USB devices you connect, plus 2 stereo (or 4 Mono) channels of the other device's audio output. This is an amazing video providing a seamless integration between your laptop and the iPad. Never heard of this audio interface that you use and it might be worth it to simplify the process of using 2 interfaces. I also appreciate you talking about some of the apps that I never heard before. Thank you for watching, happy to share ideas! I may indeed do a 2nd video addressing some of the questions I got on this one. But basically, if you use the MIDI routing control within AUM and point the MIDI to the laptop, then Ableton will automatically receive that MIDI on whatever channels you've specified.

Yeah aside from the Adat on interfaces, I think Motu’s AVB interfaces can route to several computers/ devices, plus their interfaces have on board DSP. 😮I’ve always wanted to try it out.

Really happy to have stumbled across this. I explored a similar setup. The drum sounds you can achieve in Ableton (Addictive Drums) are unparalleled on ipad but no better looper around than loopy pro so blending the two is ideal. Up to now I've been using two interfaces, flirting with idea of iconnectivity. Now you have confirmed its ease of use I'm sold. Beautiful, tasteful composition.

Back then iConnect even had a full on app to control the iConnect. I still own one of the iConnect 4+ but the preamps crapped out years ago and I’m still debating what to do with it. 😢 Looking forward for more iPad setups 🎉

Great tutorial. I connect my iPad to Mac via cable to use it as an audio interface into Ableton as well as a MIDI controller with IAC driver, but this is a cool setup. I have invested so much time into Ableton that learning these iPad DAWs will only distract me. I will play around it at some point

If you ever want to try extremely portable setup - Macs and iPads are compatible for sending audio and midi to each other with only a cable, no external gear needed :) In order to set it up after connecting iPad you have to pair it as an audio interface in sound settings, not hard at all! It's kind neat and works well. Great video - learned a lot :) Cheers

You're right - that is possible! I've not tried it myself, but have heard of others doing it. I prefer this interface for the purposes of connecting external gear with the analog ins/outs, MIDI DIN ports and also the USB hub. Thanks for watching!

@@andrewtasselmyer2436 ...even then, if you get to need it... maybe while traveling: you can connect it, as @milymlody mentions, and then, any USB hub to your Mac and voila, everything is connected (without the interface). There is a wireless way too, but I havent tried it yet, only as a remote for Logic Pro X (with which works perfekt)

@@MarcoPolux yes, it is possible to send iPad audio and midi directly to Macs with a cable, but as far as I can tell, you can't send audio back to the iPad from the laptop - there are only inputs into the aggregate device, not outputs back to iPad. this is the main benefit of the iConnectivity device that I've found - the bidirectional transfer of audio and midi. If you only need to send sound and midi from iPad to laptop, it's a great solution to just plug straight in though!

Great video! Great setup with lots of possibilities to play and improvise during the performance! Smart use of Ableton Link and Midi to sync and make them play together! How is the audio latency? And the round trip latency? Do they sync? How do you handle live played audio input? And does this influence your routing? And, could you be more specific in audio routing?

Thanks for the kind words and for watching! Latency has never been an issue for me... I've never noticed it. But I play mostly ambient and "looser" forms of music, so take my perspective with a grain of salt. I get very low round trip measures depending on how I set the sample rate and buffer sizes; I'd guess around 10-15 ms or so most of the time? which is fine for my purposes. I'm sure you can do better with smaller buffer but I try to optimize for stability and live performance rather than blazing speed. Regarding routing, not sure exactly what to say there, but I usually have just 1 stereo channel of laptop audio sent to the iPad, and 1 stereo channel of iPad audio sent back to the laptop. I send audio from Ableton to the iPad using a send channel. Oh wow, I was coming up with a complicated setup for routing audio out of my iPad with two interfaces or a mixer with audio out for each track, instead of exporting audio into ableton or fl studio, but this is way cheaper than what I was thinking. it took me a long time to understand aum it's definitely a great app, you explained it very well, the possibilities are endless with these daws and in general in music it's hard to cover everything but I think you're going to achieve great things bro, I'm an acoustic guitarist classical nylon strings and the idea is to use guitar midi, which converts the sound into data, to be able to process each of the sounds in different tracks, apart from the voice and a rhythm base, in addition to the amplitude and cleanliness in each one of the frequencies and sounds to achieve all this in the most portable way, because the idea is to start playing in small places, a fusion of electronic folk music but with ambient sounds of synthesizer a kind of movie sound but only in the sound it is crazy it's like being 3 or 4 people at the same time lol greetings and blessings where in the world are you?

Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching and for the kind words. I use a 2021 iPad Pro (11”) with the base level of storage (128 gb) and that’s fine for me. Even with a huge number of apps Ive only used 50-60% of the storage. I make sure to clean out old photos and videos to free space. I don’t store many samples locally on the iPad - I keep most of those in Dropbox so I can import them to Audio Share on the iPad, or on external hard drives to import to Ableton live when needed.

the sending goes from ableton to the ipad through the cable, so you grab the audio signal, which enters aum and then you mention that the ipad sequencers go to ableton again you return the signal to the ipad I would like to know the way that is configuration processes, I'm Mexican and I don't speak English lol so I have to translate everything, I think you've taken advantage of the potential of these programs there are many possibilities and I thank you for sharing your knowledge I hope you continue uploading tutorials a hug

The normal sequence of events is: 1.) I generate a MIDI signal on the iPad through a sequencer app like Fugue Machine, Chordjam, etc. 2.) I use the AUM MIDI mixer to send those midi notes to the MacBook over USB MIDI 3.) The midi notes received on the laptop will play a Kontakt instrument in Ableton Live 4.) The audio is sent out of the interface's outputs 5.) and occasionally, I set up an additional send channel from Ableton Live. That send channel is routed to an input on the second USB port, for the iPad, so I can receive audio in Samplr, AUM, Borderlands, or any other iPad app to manipulate. I do this so I can choose how much of the Ableton Live signal to send to the iPad.

Thanks for the kind words! 1. Regarding MIDI between multiple devices - it really depends on exactly what it is you're trying to do. You don't need this interface exactly, though. For me, it is easiest to use because I can minimiz cables and use USB MIDI, and I can also send audio seamlessly between the devices. MIDI is a little more flexible than audio though; with MIDI Thru ports and creative routing you should be OK. I'd need to understand more specifically what your goals are to say more than that, though. 2. I use a 2021 iPad Pro with the M1 chip, 11", with 128 GB of RAM. That is plenty for me. it depends on how many photos, videos, and long audio files you plan to store.

Thanks! Yeah, I find the Audio 4c to be a lifesaver. It's not perfect, but is by far the quickest/easiest way to run this kind of setup. I've been looking for similar devices for years now, and there still isn't anything that does exactly what it does. The Lewitt Connect 6 doesn't have as many ins/outs and buying 2 interfaces is clunky.

Thanks for watching! No, I never did run across another interface like this...you can configure aggregate devices in MacOS to do something similar with multiple interfaces, but it's definitely easier for me to have a single, dedicated device for this application.

Most of the newer USB C ports if theyre atleast 3.2 should have pass thru. Power just depends on the interface and device. Now, one of the biggest benefits of Apple Mac/Ipad Pro is Thunderbolt 3-4. You can daisy chain up to 6 devices from one port. Including HDMI, Display port, External drives, E-GPU's, two 4k screens, and 8k screen on Thunderbolt 4. I think most Thunderbolt Interfaces are still using Thunderbolt 3 right now, but they both have about the same features with a couple here and there. Now, no need to rush out and grab one! That interface will be good, but you need some extra ins/outs someday, and even then you can just add on, but I would say if you do upgrade go for something with Thunderbolt. Personally I'm a fan of the Universal Apollo stuff because it works really great with Mac, and they've actually got a pretty decent DAW that comes along with it now. I think their unit around that size is a little more expensive, and a little different I/O, but the nice thing about today's tech and interfaces is that you can actually combine plenty of it. If you ever don't have a USB cable you can even connect your Ipad and Mac via the network to send Midi and Audio.

All fair points. But for me this is the easiest and most flexible way to go about it while also incorporating additional controllers and hardware. Being able to route all of the midi signals within AUM in a matrix style mixer is essential for my workflow and especially on stage. I love the UA stuff too but a) I can't afford it, and b) I work mostly in the box and don't have any need for the extra ins/outs.

Thank you for watching! Yes, you can send up to 4 channels out of each USB port to the other...so you could receive 4 mono or 2 stereo channels in Logic from AUM. It's not a lot, unfortunately. Thank you for watching! Within AUM, you can open up the midi routing matrix by pressing the button in the top right corner of the screen - then you just point the midi output of any app to whichever output you want (USB or DIN). In ableton you can just select the midi input of your choosing on the channel strip in session view - there's a dropdown menu to select midi source and you can choose either USB or DIN midi from the interface. I can't attach pictures to comments here, but hopefully that's clear.

Each USB port has access to the hardware ins 1-4, and also has 4 channels of output. Thanks! Appreciate that. You can't do exactly the same thing with just a focus rite. You can only connect one host device (computer/tablet) at a time to one of those. You could connect your iPad directly to a Mac and send audio and midi *to* the laptop *from* the iPad through just a USB cable, but you can't send audio and midi bidirectionally - to and from both devices this way. For that, you need a device like the connectivity, which has 2 USB ports and allows 2 computers/ablets to connect and share signals simultaneously.

This was awesome (KZbin's recommendations finally coming in handy) - I have been trying to figure out how to bring my macbook and ipad when working through the Arturia AudioFuse interface and I'm 90% sure at this point it cannot be done. However, I have read that Airplay on Mac OS 12 (which I need to upgrade to) you can actually wirelessly stream audio and video between apple devices, so I wonder if that would work as a bridge...? That doesn't necessarily address the wireless midi issue, but I feel like there are a enough ways around that (e.g. WIDI Master), which I think can allow one midi controller to speak to multiple computers/virtual interfaces.

It wouldn't surprise me if that's possible, but I'm sure there is some bluetooth-induced latency - can't confirm this, though. I know that you could plug an iPad directly into the laptop and get access to MIDI control, if I'm not mistaken. I do use a wireless MIDI adapter sometimes if all I'm trying to do is control a synth remotely, or something like that. I'm sure someone smarter than I am has figured out something better. I just prefer the overall ease and convenience of audio and midi sharing through 1 box with no unpredictability.

Following on from watching this, I once again tried to get as far as I could with my own attempt at ~streamlining~ and thus far I have it setup such that my keystep pro > MacBook (via USB hub on the back of my audiofuse) + WIDI wireless on the keystep’s MIDI I/O jacks > iPad (wirelessly via AUM) > back to keystep (via WIDI) > MacBook/DAW. So actually the audiofuse is irrelevant at the moment 😅. WIDI has such reliably low latency that it’s good enough for my needs. But you’re definitely right re: Bluetooth audio latency being a potential fly in the ointment…

My pleasure! Regarding Samplr vs. Koala, it's really just a matter of personal preference on the UI for me. I like that Samplr immediately presents the whole waveform to scan through with touch and gestures, and have found it a little bit easier to quickly get a loop going during live performances. That's not to say that Koala isn't quick to use, too; it's just that I've been using Samplr for so long to make loops and drones that I have kind of oriented my workflow around it at this point. Yes, you could very easily integrate with Logic, Bitwig, or any other DAW you'd like. I like Ableton Live the most, but I have used it with Logic in the past quite often and I know lots of people who like Bitwig too. I have personally found that the new iConnectivity 4c is much more stable and reliable than the older Audio2+ and Audio4+ models that they sold. I've yet to have any issues with mine and the software is much more streamlined. I had 2 of the older Audio 2+, and I experienced several crashes and cases of audio crackling/dropouts for seemingly no reason. Both of those older models are discontinued now, so if you wanted to grab a used model somewhere, I don't even know what kind of support would be offered anymore. Just my 2 cents there!

Hey Andrew, this is amazing! I am in the market for a new audio interface as I have since bought a hardware synth so I might consider Audio4c AND I have always wanted a looping setup. I use Ableton live on my windows PC but I find that the looping in Ableton is not great. I've always wanted a setup to send audio from Ableton to loopy Pro and then play with the loops in real time. Great to hear, thanks for watching! No, LK can't open any plugins on its own. Just think of it like a control surface. It can do things like change the level of tracks, adjust send levels, send MIDI notes on the keyboard, etc.

Thanks for watching! Yes, you can send midi to a MacBook by just plugging it directly into the computer with a USB cable. I’ve never tried this but I’ve heard of others doing it. Not sure if you could pass audio back and forth seamlessly, though. No, I don’t believe you can import midi clips to fugue machine. You have to create your sequences in the app.

I have not used Loopy extensively for sampling, but it is very capable. I use it mostly in performance, to loop and mix audio live.

Another new sort of device that allows connecting two USB-C devices and powers a mobile device plugged into it is the Lewitt Audio C. The only thing it doesn't do that the iconnectivity audio interface does is midi connection; it's audio-only.

Thanks for the kind words! If you don't want to purchase the interface, then I think you can connect an iPad directly to a MacBook through a USB cable and configure the iPad as an interface. Frankly, I've not tried this myself so can't really vouch for how well it works or how to do it. I have always used audio interfaces of some kind when sending audio to iPads.

When I'm recording percussion, I occasionally have to adjust/quantize if I want to match drums coming from iPad to the exact starting point of a bar in Ableton. It's a minor thing but occasionally has to be watched for. This is great Andrew. With the ic4c... does this interface give you to ability to run multi-channel out from AUM into Ableton? You mentioned running the iPad audio into Ableton... but it was unclear if it was multi-channel routing. ie: would I be able to route each individual audio channel in AUM to an individual audio channel in Ableton? And at what max sample rate btw? I'm currently using a USB-C connection from my iPadProM1 to my MBP-M1max... the midi routing is sufficient for my needs... however my main pitfalls with this current setup is the 2 channel audio and low sample rate limitation. Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, you can get multiple channels from AUM into Ableton…but it’s limited to only 4 mono, 2 stereo…sort of a bummer. On each USB port, you have access to the 4 analog inputs, plus 2 stereo pairs from the other USB port. The manual has a basic overview of the possible routings. Regarding sample rate, you can do a max of 24 bit / 96 kHz.

Thanks for watching! Correct, those usb ports on the audiofuse are only a USB hub for peripherals and not a full usb audio interface. There still aren’t many options for doing this. Since posting the video, Lewitt has come out with a device called the Connect 6 that is similar to the 4c, but a little more limited on analog inputs/outputs. I also really dislike the form factor. I still think the 4c is the best option for this type of a workflow.

Thanks! Latency is pretty good...with a 128 sample buffer in Ableton Live, I get about 10 ms roundtrip. It's fast enough for me, especially playing ambient/experimental music not dependent on *really* precise timing. It feels pretty immediate and not noticeable at all when I perform.

Based on the Midi2+ Manual (page 21) you have Audio passThru: The iConnectMIDI2+ can stream up to eight channels of audio (four in each direction). This could be a solution if you do not need extra audio inputs/outputs 1/4.

At Last I got the 4C - Game Changer. I was worried about the FB group iConnectivity comments saying about click & noise but Quality is way better than Steinberg UR44 (Class compliant) Also way better on the headphone output as I had to buy a headphone amp to power my 250 OHM (Studio) 770-PRO's but no need on this device ! (Its REALLY loud !). Took me hrs to figure out the IN/Outputs in AL but got there in the end. Have not tried splitting the midi yet and still confused on that one. Please can you do an A/Live Video showing your mix template please? Or Can you provide the AL Template as I use same apps ! Thank you sir...I have watched you video 20 times at least and it still blows me away on what you have discovered and the music is Wow !

Hi there, I am not sure if any other tutorials exist, but I usually route all MIDI within AUM on the iPad. There is a matrix MIDI mixer and you can manually select where to send MIDI on the iPad sequencers. I send it to USB1 (my laptop), and then within Ableton, I create MIDI tracks that receive MIDI on the specific channels I designate. The default Live configuration should be set up to do this. Hopefully that helps!

Hi Andrew :) I'm about to consider a Nearly new audio4c. I use WIN 10 (Kept the updates away from destroying my stable Audio PC set up) I run everything you use (We are twins) Just checking that the send to Ipad Audio feature is going to still work? The flow of back/forth audio is just too attractive for fast set up music production without the hassles. (I have new/old MIDI equipment running through a mixer also - Wavestate, Norns, EMU2500, X2 KORG M1R, YAMAHA FBO1, etc ) I also have a spare iphone 7 so want to connect that as most of the music apps work well on it (and no need to get 2nd license) Can you advice me on best set up for that within the audio4c environment. (I presume power will be via the camera connector dongle from the powered USB port extension?) Any tips on running 2 apple devices would be great ! BTW your other videos are superb, your so clear in your advice/tips/enthusiasm, its like breath of fresh air.

You'll just need to connect to one of the USB slots using the apple camera connection kit. It will be given power through USB2 specifically, if you connect it there. Hope this helps! Enjoy!

Greetings from CA bro, most likely you are very busy, but I have some questions, what is for you the main advantage of sending midi messages between the ipad and the Mac, I have tried to establish the connection by bluetooth but I still have not succeeded , when you send the midi signal of a plugin that comes out of the macbook " example a kontakr violin to the ipad, does the sound enter the same as it comes out of the macbook or only the signal arrives? I ask you this because I just downloaded " arcade " and the sounds are great I would like to see a way to send them to aum only if possible since it is easier for me to process the signal there and then send it to garage band, it is a basic software for now it works for what I need I am studying pro tools artist It is still difficult for me, can you give me some recommendation for a plugin to give the final touch to give volume and gain body to the mix? Hmm, not sure I follow exactly what you are saying. In the video I explain what I'm doing - I send a MIDI signal from the iPad to the MacBook over USB MIDI on the interface. You can choose where to send the MIDI notes by using the MIDI routing mixer in the AUM app. You can mix the audio on the interface's software. The sound is the same whether I play it from the MacBook or send it to the iPad.

Interesting. I wonder if there is a cheaper way to get the bidirectional sending audio and MIDI. That sounds really useful but since I already have an Apollo interface I don't want to buy one just to get the iPad and Ableton to communicate in this way. So how do you then save projects? Do you save them in AUM and Ableton at the same time?

I know you can connect an iPad directly to a laptop and send MIDI and audio *to* the laptop, but to my knowledge, not the other way. I am not sure if there's a similar product that does what this interface does in exactly this way. Would be great to know, though.

afaik iDAM lets you send MIDI back and forth, but for audio is from iOS to macOS only

Hi, really enjoyed your video, one question, with your audio interface can you send individual audio channels out of AUM to Individual tracks in ableton?

Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, you can get multiple channels from AUM into Ableton…but it’s limited to only 4 mono, 2 stereo. On each USB port, you have access to the 4 analog inputs, plus 2 stereo pairs from the other USB port. The manual has a basic overview of the possible routings.

I'm not sure if the ins/outs are DC-coupled or not, so I can't confirm. I don't see it mentioned in the manual so I don't think so. I haven't used euro rack in a while now, so I didn't do any deeper research on that before buying one.

If my goal was replacing my Maschine MK3 with this setup, is there a way to load groups of sounds into the Ableton Rack, and then trigger those sounds on a set of pads on the iPad? As well as easily toggle to a keyboard view of any of those given sounds from the rack?

Yes, you could replicate something close to this. In loopy pro, you could set up a page of pads designed to send program changes to live. There are also a few apps for keyboard playing, pads-based chord triggering, etc. that you could easily toggle between on top of that. It wouldn’t be everything that maschine is, but it could be at least those two basic functions.
