I'm daughter is considering going from vegetarian to vegan, which prompted me to do a little fatherly research on KZbin (because reading is so 20th century). My initial search results were rather unsettling. Most "Vegans" seemed more interested in flaunting their toned abs and/or pitching their own branded, zero-science diets than with giving practical nutritional advice. Then I happened upon The Unnatural Vegan! As a relieved father, I thank you for being reasonable, well-read, articulate and sane! My daughter's review: "She's very smart and naturally pretty and she doesn't wave her butt in front of the camera every ten seconds." Coming from a slightly jaded fifteen year old, that is high praise!

+Will Px I always recommend her. Other important point for a teenager: Unatural Vegan is never afraid of saying : I was wrong, and she is allways compassionate. If not: I care only for animals (what are we then?). It's a very good channel for any scientific oriented mind.
@9mler8 жыл бұрын
+Will Px unfortunately, I would be concerned as a parent, too. If I had a child who wanted to go vegan, then how am I supposed to protect them from people like freelee, or durianrider, who use cult-like tactics to promote such horrible ideas? It's bad enough that we have the media perpetuating this nonsense, but we don't need people using mind control, which is essentially what freelee and durianrider do. They perpetuate the message of "the ends justify the means" and "two wrongs make a right." That, along with the fact that the two of them have put out videos discouraging young people from, say, going to school (since going to school would involve learning facts, thereby derailing any "teachings" from the two of them).
@Wulfdoom8 жыл бұрын
+9mler My daughter thinks Freelee is a "beyond awful" and has too much sense and self-respect to succumb to "mind control." You're using my comment as a launch pad to vent your own particular grievances. This is KZbin where all comments are fair game. However, if you made these remarks in my presences, I would tell you to f**k off.

I think it's cool for vegans to date vegans, but at the same time I don't see what's wrong with vegans dating non-vegans. My partner is not a vegan, but because of me he has drastically reduced his intake of animal products and keeps no meat in the house. We eat out mostly at vegan places, so he rarely orders meat at restaurants either. If I had never started dating him, he would have still been consuming large amounts of meat. So even though he's not a vegan, his actions have reduced animal suffering.
@learninginelementary8 жыл бұрын
+Jill Elyse - Same story here. I had primarily focused on looking for a vegan/vegetarian for a while before starting to date my fiance. He is not vegan or vegetarian and I never expect him to become one. In our time together he has learned how easy it is to reduce your meat and dairy intake and cook vegan meals. He rarely eats meat at home or when we go out to eat. If he eats meat it's usually during the work day when I'm not around or at a family gathering. He even recommends vegan restaurants to his friends and talks about how good the food is. I always think about how much he's changed his lifestyle since being with me and I'm impressed by the changes he's made.

"We share our love in fantasy sci fi films, but he doesn't share my love in music and I don't share his interests in water sports. And it really doesn't matter." I really love this. People expect all the time that your partner needs to be the same person as you. And you end up expecting it yourself. But, once you really fall for someone you realise that the connection is beyond interests. You just click well and that's that.

I live in a conservative town in New England where everyone hunts and has dairy farms. For me, the hard part is falling for people who are hunters/fishers and don't show any signs of being willing to change. When I do meet a vegan, they tend to be into pseudoscience because in this area you're either a conservative white male or a rebellious hippie. It's rare to be neither like me. It's so hard for me to have genuine connections to and feelings for people who have different values than me. I loved my ex so much but he was a huge meat-eater who made fun of veganism. I eat a plant-based diet while my partner does not and we make it work. I don't judge the fact that he enjoys eating animal products and he also allows me to make the meal plan. From there, he decides what he would like to add to his meal. Because I make the meal plan, it ends up meaning that he consumes far less animal products than before. Any eggs he eats, come from my parent's backyard chickens and we purchase our meat from a local butcher shop. When we go out to eat, I order a meal without any animal products and he orders another meal and we share. Since I can never finish a meal at a restaurant, it works well for us. While it may not be anyone's perfect relationship, I love and respect him and will never force him to change to my eating lifestyle. I appreciate all the support he gives me especially with both of our families and not criticizing me anytime I grill someone about the food they want to serve me.

I went vegan before I met my husband and to be honest, I didn't look for another vegan. I focused more on finding someone I could really connect with on other things as well as having an open mind. I was vegan for a year and a half before I met my hubby. He has been very supportive and has never been rude or really questioned my diet choice. The only thing he worried about is supplements, haha! He loves me. 💕 Since being with me, he has cut out his meat A LOT. At home we eat vegan, occasionally he will buy stuff that's vegetarian, but we rarely buy any meat for him because he won't eat it at home. He mostly only eats it when he goes out to eat with co workers or friends. We always go to vegan restaurants together. He has been so supportive and we have the same values as far as reusing, reducing and recycling. Also, limiting water usage, electricity and so on. He is also the one who saves the spiders in the house...eek! I cant do that, lol! 🤣 Anyways, we are happily married and now I consider him 80% vegetarian. ❤️💕😃

Thanks & appreciate your sincere thoughts on the subject which is not one of the easiest to talk obviously. In the process, I learned other philosophical viewpoints as well. Today, I am glad that I am a vegan single yet and have gained a lot on the subject by being composed and having patience.

My bf and I got together three years ago and we both ate meat. A year later, I went vegetarian because we'd gotten a dog and I couldn't justify eating animals when I saw how capable of thoughts and emotions they are. I explained this to my partner and he went pescatarian. A year after that, I went vegan after seeing footage of hens and cows being tortured and slaughtered for dairy and eggs. It took him a couple months to come around, and I'm not gonna lie, it was a rough few months. Every time he ordered something with cheese on it my distaste was apparent. The real arguments started when we began discussing kids. My wedding would be vegan, and my children would be raised vegan. We nearly broke up then and there but fortunately the fight finally inspired him to do his own research and like me he decided that veganism was the obvious conclusion. If he hadn't made the switch, I don't know that it would have lasted. But now we have our mostly vegan dog and a vegan company and we're pretty much living the dream so I always encourage that people educate their partners before deciding to split.

I don't think it happens like that most of the time. You are probably one if the lucky few. Most people are stuck in their ways. From experience with exes and family members most people are very resistant to such big Changes. I'd rather wait to find someone who is vegan than having a partner who has different morals and ethics than I do. It's frustrating and not worth the headache even if in some ways it would be easier to just date someone I was attracted to but didn't meet the criteria
@FriedKale8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Most of my past relationships are example of what you say. And if it's not near impossible, it's certainly hard. I've always had an effect in reducing their meat consumption though!

I’ve been lurking on your channel for a while now, and I really wanted to thank you. I’d been turned off from veganism by the community for a while now, but watching you channel has inspired me to go vegan, seeing that there are rational people in the community. So, once again, thank you.

+Kimberly H I've been in a relationship with my partner for many years. We lived around the corner from each other during high school. We have a child. She is not vegan. She is catholic. I am an atheist. She believes haunted houses are real. I think that doesn't even require a response. She likes shopping, I like being outdoors. She drinks alcohol. I don't, and so on. It is important to navigate the practical consequences of differences in opinion, but with the right attitude it can be done. Should our son attend a catholic school, or not? What are the likely outcomes, and how can we deal with them? You must really like your boyfriend as things stand, so if you want to be with him you can work it out. People really resent persistent attempts at being "converted". I would despise attempts at being converted to Catholicism. Sure, I think reason is on my side in this case, but it is the act that people dislike.

Gotta say, I don't like the idea of "veganIzing" someone you're in a relationship. You either compromise or leave the relationship. Why try to change someone? That's not fair to either party.

What is your opinion on someone who eats food that in the label says "may contain eggs/milk"? Peta suggests not to avoid those foods for a few reasons, but I'm interested in your opinion.
@LinkEX8 жыл бұрын
You didn't ask me, but: Step 1: Stop listening to PETA, it's an extremist group of nutjobs. Step 2: Do your research (preferably evidence-based) and draw your own conclusions from it. Step 3: Stay open to new perspectives if they bring up valid points. Depending on the product, the amount of egg and milk in it might be so miniscule that it is negligible - and/or effectively does not change the demand for egg or milk production.

Met my male soul mate online over a mutual interest FB group. As a matter of fact he has supported me throughout the past 3 years with my debilitating illness and got down on bended knee. We had talked online for 3 months nearly daily before we met in person. We're also on the same page on our health, and the raising of my child and her health. He isn't even the biological father but he was totally honoured when she started calling him 'Dadda' recently.

Great down to earth advice! I think one of the most important bits of advice you give is not to get carried away by sentimentality. You should choose a partner largely out of the most rational part of your brain- when buying a new car, you make carefully calculated decisions before purchasing. The same should go for relationships. (And that doesn't mean your relationship will be devoid of passion/romance!!)

I am still baffle that you would describe antinatalism as mysantropic, I think you get that idea because a good amount of antinatalists are mysantropic or not very articulate on the subject. (I like freelee and durianrider but they are not good example of antinatalism sorry)

This may be true for some people, but I personally don't think it's a bad thing to be in a relationship with someone before you meet them in real life. I think it's important you see them over webcam/microphone so you are sure they are who they say they are but don't be too afraid of it not working out that you don't give it a chance. My boyfriend and I live on different continents, so meeting up quickly was not going to be an option, and especially if we weren't sure we were going to like each other. We're still together and just as in love (if not more) long after meeting. Obviously this is just my case that worked out well, but all I'm trying to say is don't think you can't know or be close to someone over Skype. Sure, you won't be able to hug and kiss, but you can definitely have a damn good emotional connection. If you can't meet that person quickly, do not let it stop you from feeling how you're feeling and letting them know it. Maybe it won't work out in person but maybe it will, and either way you will have enjoyed spending time talking to them. You can never ever know 100% for certain if a relationship is going to "work out" or how long it is going to last. Don't let distance stop you from having a chance at love.

Exactly! My boyfriend and I met online on a game called World of Warcraft 8 years ago! We were long-distanced for six years and were able to make it work....and we have been together in person for two years now. Overall, long-distanced relationships can work very well, if it is meant to be, it will be! Don't knock it until you try it, right? :)

If I wanted to date, I wouldn't care if s/he were vegan or not. I would care if s/he were rational, open minded, scientifically literate (enough to know how to read and understand scientific papers and shit), and driven to improve him/herself, because that would mean s/he'd be a million times more likely to go vegan.I would never date a meat-head.
@diegomagana53588 жыл бұрын
+Nameless spot on. I would definitely want my partner to make the ethical connection. Nothing irks me so much as an ethically apathetic "on-a-diet" vegan.

Scientifically literate is the most pretentious term I've heard.
@lifewithmel98948 жыл бұрын
+Notorious Jag I think it's pretty rare for someone who doesn't have a non-science background to be able to read and understand scientific papers, they're full of jargon and require understanding of experimental techniques. Besides, how common is it for people to actually buy subscriptions to scientific journals?
@diegomagana53588 жыл бұрын
+lifewithmel well. there's degrees of scientific literacy. obviously a scientist is a lot more scientifically literate than I would ever be. I just want someone scientifically literate ENOUGH to not fall for bs especially in the field of nutrition. I guess scientifically literate isnt the right word im looking for. skeptical is a better term. also, I should mention that each field of science has its own language so a marine biologist is likely not scientifically literate when it comes to nutrition science. there are also tons of scientific papers that are available for free to the public online.

heey , so I wanted to know if it's OK that I eat every two hours on a vegan diet. I mostly eat fruit and veggies during the day and at night I eat some oatmeal or beans with a salad or something. I recently came to this vegan diet about a month ago and I feel fine but I don't really know if it's okay to eat this way. My main concern is if my digestive system does not process well the fruits and veggies I eat since some take up to 3 hours to digest and stuff but yea I would really like you to help me please ^-^

I have a bit of an issue here because I started dating my boyfriend before I went vegan and I only recently went vegan but we've been together for almost 4 years and he is a very hardcore carnivore with absolutely zero intentions of going vegan I'm at a loss of what to do I know he'll never change but I love him more than anything so it's a bit of a struggle if anyone has any advice let me know
@---nobody---8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, like she said, all you can do is educate him, and see if he'll make the compassionate choice. You could also try getting him to try really good vegan meats to show him how easy it could be. And also, try asking if he'll do it for you, because it's important to you and it's your moral and ethical belief. But only you can decide what you want and are okay with. If you can't handle it, that's okay. Same as if you are okay with it.

I struggle being a Christian and a vegan and finding love. I've been vegan for 2 years now, Christian for 4, and somehow most of the Christian men I meet who agree with me theologically, and are really great understanding guys, they just cannot fathom never eating meat dairy or egg again... It's quite discouraging. Thank you for this video! I do love a voice of reason, and I feel inspired.. I'm happy for your relationship :)
