Exactly The main problem the prefilmed ending only worked for s2 when they filmed it cuz they feared cancellation and where gonna make Victoria the mother so it made more sense back then but with the alternate ending that just ends with the mother and Ted meeting is more Canon and valid

For me it wasn’t just the last season, I feel like the the second half of the series was just drilling it into our heads that Barney and Robin were so good together while Ted and Robin were not! They claim to of wanted this ending all along, so why even in the last season did they have an entire episode about how Ted and Robin don’t belong together???
@KiraFriede
@KiraFriede 2 жыл бұрын
I think they could have saved the prefilmed ending by just moving the time line and have the older child actors come in and yes, they'd look older, but you could turn that into a joke.

I don't have a problem with the mother dying, or the last season being a weekend (I actually liked that). I have more of a problem with Barney and Robin divorcing. I think it was just too rushed and if they were given more time to explain things it would have gone over better.

Yes like they threw all the character development of Barney, Robin & Ted in a single episode. Ted realizing he and Robin are not meant to be was so well done and so was the Barney and Robin's relationship but no they had to ruin everything to bring Ted with Robin.

I still say that everyone could have had their way if the writers made the reason for their divorce Barney having a kid. Not a baby like in the real ending, a kid from a while back who found her dad. Robin wouldn’t want to raise kids, let alone someone else kid, and It would have been him finally having consequences for leaving so many women in the dust.

The only reason why people think Season 9 is the worst season is because of the ending. Like the fact that the ending was so bad, made the whole season subconsciously worse, but its actually a really enjoyable and good season imo.

I mean it legit just clashed so badly. They spent a season on the wedding and building and reinforcing the relationship. Only to break it all down in a few seconds at the last possible moment. It just was such a gut punch it shaded the show season differently.

I loved when we got Barney's back story and found out what his job was. Not sure how cemented it was when they first addressed it (fully planned, know the acronym and job title but still fleshing it out, knew it was an acronym but hadn't worked out the job title yet, or started with him just saying it and conceived the whole thing later). But it was beautiful.

I loved How I Met Your Mother, but I was very disappointed with the ending where the titular mother (Tracy) got killed off. While I love the relationship of Ted and Robin in the show I personally see them as best friends than actual lovers, which is why I prefer the Alternate Ending where Tracy was left alive. Also RIP Bob Saget (the voice of Older Ted).
@monicaenglish2566

Agreed!! The last season was horrible with the buildup of the mother only for her to be killed off and focusing heavily on Robin and Barney’s wedding for the entire season only to have them divorce shortly after at the end like… what was the point!

I don’t even mind the fact that the mother died, I think it actually explains better why Ted is telling the story in such detail to his kids. I just wish it ended with just the lesson of it’s “better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all”, and then just had everyone be good friends still and supporting one another that way.
@rogerroger9952

As a writer myself, one of the most important things to know going into a story is how you want it to end. You're right that it's a "hack" of sorts. But you're also right in that you can't lock yourself into that ending before you've seen how your characters grow and change. You always want to be able to be flexible. The more rigid you have to be, the harder the writer's block will hit. Basically, you have to be able to something as drastic as killing your main character at a moment's notice, if that is what the story demands while you're writing it. So, yeah, cautionary tale for sure. Don't lock yourself into an ending before you've at the very least done a detailed outline up to it.
@4everbuffylover
@4everbuffylover 2 жыл бұрын
This is the one thing that makes me so mad! Showrunners will tell a great story and then they’ll do something stupid like kill off the main character in the final episode, not because it makes any sense, but because it’s flashy. They either don’t take the time to think through an ending or go with the first ending they came up with s1 even though that ending no longer makes any sense.
@taylorgayhart9497
@taylorgayhart9497 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree but ALSO if you know the ending you’re building towards you should also be laying the groundwork from the beginning. What I mean is: they knew it was going to end with Ted+Robin, so then why did they spend the second half of the series showing us that Barney and Robin were perfect together, and that Ted and Robin weren’t compatible??? Why have an entire episode IN THE LAST SEASON that is dedicated to Ted (and the audience) “letting go” of Ted+Robin and getting on board with Robin+Barney to three episode later say “never mind it was the other way around!”??? It makes no sense!! Either change the ending to match the story you told, or write a narrative that builds to that ending!!!!
@rogerroger9952
@rogerroger9952 2 жыл бұрын
@@taylorgayhart9497 Yes, I agree completely. Don't really recall the show that well because I watched it over 5 years ago now, but I remember distinctly being frustrated that they had Ted get over Robin only to go rushing back to her. And while the actors for Barney and Robin definitely had a lot of chemistry, it's a cop out to say that's the only reason they worked so well. Their characters were bound to work well together as they were both the more chaotic characters in the group and would naturally play to each others energy even on paper.
@user-mx4is4fx3c
@user-mx4is4fx3c 2 жыл бұрын
I also think it's a cautionary tale about reading the room. I mean the writers could have written and shot a new ending when the original one stopped working. But instead of reading the room and seeing what's better for the characters as they currently are, they stuck their guns and ruined their show's chance to be remembered as the masterpiece that revolutionized sitcoms

I started to watch it in college, every once in awhile I would catch an episode at the gym. It became one of those, "oh, this is usually good, might as well have it on," kind of shows. I don't remember which episode it was that made me want to watch it in order on Netflix, but I am glad I did. It's a great show, some of it is truly art. Like you mentioned, the music used during the ending scenes, the mystery set up and pay off. Also just how some of the episodes are structured where you start in one time, back it up, catch up, continue. I have also always loved the use of symbolism. The mother with the yellow umbrella and yellow school bus, Robin with the blue French horn, Ted with the red cowboy boots when he was trying to be somebody he wasn't, Lily and "Marshmallow" both evoking white while Barney always a black suit and a black apartment. Even Ted's girlfriends have symbolic items, like Victoria with cakes, Stella with the orange kangaroo, and the sock monkey girlfriend. The showrunners really took their time, most of the time, to say as much about the characters as they could through those characters words, actions, apartments, and belongings. Just a good show all around. Maybe some episodes are not as good as others, but overall I feel it is worth watching the whole thing at least once, if sitcoms are your jam.

this is so chaotic and disjointed that you can feel the love and passion through the screen. Love to see another true HIMYM stan; one who acknowledges the show's flaws and critiques, but knows that they're essential. a flawed series doesn't make it bad, it makes it authentic, and that's what always brings me back to it. These characters were real people who changed and grew as time went on, making the journey that much more unique and special. i started watching live during season 5 and I don't think a week has gone by since where I didn't watch or fully describe an episode to someone. Thank you for your thoughts, and for verifying that I'm not the only one this crazy about these 5 people and their ridiculous and heartfelt stories ♥

I wasn't sure where this video was going but honestly you made me excited to want to watch HIMYM again. It would be a great background show while I work on my art.

im so glad you mentioned The Slap Bet. That's honestly my favourite episode, I feel exactly the same as you about Himym. (however, the show is still my all time fave) its mad how we both found it the same way (via e4) however i was reccomended tbbt by a friend but tuned in too early and watched himym instead

I remember watching this show a lot with my dad. I think I was too young to get most of the jokes, but it was just fun to do it. It’s was especially funny when he got really angry when it ended
