Hey everyone! Today I thought I'd show you how I organize my writing projects on my computer, in Google Drive. I like watching how other writers keep track of all their different writing files, so I wanted to share my process as well, though it's not perfect. How do you organize your writing projects in your computer?

Organizing your files is as important as setting your schedule right to maximize productivity. Great video, Iasmina! 😍🤓🥰

Ah, I've had to get so much more organized in recent years, used to be awful about it. Code projects and story docs would just get the most generic names and be put in random places (after the huge success of "Untitled Project", I'm excited to announce "Untitled Project 2", which can be found in "New Folder"), but then I finally learned how good organization helps my creative endeavors. Outside of finding things easier, it helps me create useful mental models and categories. Thanks for being so transparent and open about how you work and your ideas. I've been a huge perfectionist in the past, pretty afraid of showing things to people until they were good and ready. Learning to let go and talk to others about what I'm working on even, if I'm not very confident about it, has really diversified the kinds of ideas/feedback I'm exposed to and made things less stressful overall. The ease with which you share things with others is admirable and motivating, so thanks again!

I'm glad it comes across as easy, because it sure does not always feel that way 😅. I love the idea of sharing as much as possible of my process/ideas, because I also love watching other writers and learning from them, so I strive to do the same. But trust me, I second guess myself every step of the way. The best part is filming the video, but then once I start editing, uploading, and finally, publishing it, I want to delete it all because I'm scared I may have overshared, or that others will judge my works in progress, taking them as a "final" thing, or (and i know this is stupid) steal my ideas or my titles, etc, etc. But then I get people telling me how much it helped them to see someone else's process, and then I feel better about it haha.

You have given me the inspiration to become an brilliant engineer because I'm building a time machine to travel when you have completed and published your book, while also making a detour to watch the vid of you reading your high school fan fiction. I think that is a cool idea. I'm hooked!

Yay haha! I will have to see how to make it entertaining and not just me dissolving into cringe as I read my old stories 😅.

Hi Iasmina, Great information. It looks like your original documents and backups are on your Google Drive. If so, what additional backup methodology do you employ to back them up to your local computer or elsewhere? A published friend of my wife lost his entire work in progress when a problem occurred on his Google Drive, so he had to start over. My wife works locally for all her projects (MacBook Pro & Scrivener), but I have 3 Time Machine backups for her computer (one is live, the other two are done weekly and held in separate fire safes) and 4 thumb drives (using Carbon Copy Cloner weekly) for her "Writings" folder, which holds all writing related materials. When she is doing revisions based on beta reader input, she uses Word on her iPad and the revision copy is on her OneDrive, which I backup every hour to a separate folder on her MacBook using Carbon Copy Cloner automation. Perhaps I am over-thinking it, but I usually listen to my internal "Professor Paranoia". At least she won't lose her work for lack of backups.😃

This is so intricate. I never understood how people could dedicate so much time to make things so organised. For me personally I have one big folder with scrivener drafts in them. And then everything relating to those drafts are in the Scrivener files in their own folders. This makes me feel so Lazy.

Honestly I didn't think it was that organized, I guess that's just how my brain works, because I like to save everything and it would become overwhelming if I just kept all of it into one single folder, across multiple projects and so on. This makes sense for me, but absolutely do what works for you!

@@IasminaEdina Yeah it honestly is overwhelming having it all in one place but Im not a plotter so the things that I have written down are just for memory sake really.

Thanks for these tips. I got myself into a real mess on Google docs. I had to give up. I could not grasp their folder system. Back to the drawing board. Is it true that Google docs do not count towards your free storage, but Microsoft documents do?

Dude, I remember watching your sketches like more than a decade ago (ah the nostalgia!)! idk how i remember but after all these years i was just curious to search for purplebox and im really happy to see you, feels like a connection to the past. I like the concept of the channel! do you have any advice on movie scripts?
@IasminaEdina2 жыл бұрын
Haha, welcome back! Some may call it nostalgia, others may call it cringe 😅. But yes I do book and writing videos now. As for movie scripts, read Save The Cat! It's a fantastic plotting book that was written for movie scripts but many use it for writing books as well because it applies for both and it's very good.
