Erin, don’t worry about your mangaves. I have had mine for many years. Some are huge. I take them in every year. I put them in a spare bedroom. I am a horrible houseplant owner. My mangaves live on neglect in the winter. I use regular potting soil. They don’t care. They are amazing. The only thing I have to be concerned about is my back. I put mine in light weight pots but boy are they heavy. I live in central Pennsylvania. I love your videos. Keep them coming!

I put them outside once our last frost has passed, and they grow huge! I'm right across the Lake from you to the east in northwest Michigan, and I have NEVER heard of anyone trying to overwinter datura....can't wait to see how yours does. I live in Zone 9B (California) where the majority of my perennials over winter in the ground with an occasional cover if a hard freeze is forecast. If I had to go through what you do to over winter plants, there would be a lot of dead stumps in my garden! In fall, I focus my efforts on multiplying a few tender perennials/annuals that I really love - - I take a bunch of cuttings and over-winter the rooted cuttings in an unheated greenhouse. I also have two banana plants. I wish they would just die, but others in my life think they are wonderful They are huge (more than 20' tall) ! And totally ruin the cottage garden look I prefer. I cut them to the ground each year (honestly kind of hoping a nice hard freeze will take them out), but they always come back, larger than ever. The leaves are so enormous and heavy, I can barely lift them!

Hi Erin! Thanks for the great info. I love that nothing keeps you from raising tropicals! I have a question regarding a few outdoor shrubs that I have growing in pots. I’m in Ohio 6B. I have a Tiny Devil Ninebark (zones 3-7) and a Kaleidoscope Abelia (zones 6-9) growing in large terracotta pots. I assume the ninebark will be fine since it’s Hardy to zone 3. Can I just leave her out in the yard all winter, even in the snow?…The Abelia worries me more since she’s a southern shrub. How should I winterize her? Any suggestions are appreciated! I planted them both in June so they’re not super established yet. Thanks! Kim
@TheImpatientGardener23 күн бұрын
@@kimbullett3293 you’re on the right track here. As long as the ninebark is in a frost proof pot you can leave it out wherever you like (although a spot protected from the wind will always help). Make sure to set the pot up on some kind of feet or blocks so it doesn’t freeze to the ground. The Abelia will need more protection. If you have an unheated garage that will work (and that’s what I do). If that’s not available I’d look for a very protected spot to tuck it in and perhaps consider providing some protection around the pot such as a chicken wire cage stuffed with leaves, straw bales or even evergreen boughs stacked up around it.
