Love the bulb lawn! I started a mini one under a crabapple tree this year. It's in an area my mow-a-holic husband doesn't touch. I have a bulb tip for anyone growing in flower beds that I discovered by accident - plant a few miniature daffodils in the same hole as larger ones. The miniatures cover a lot of the stem and wilting foliage and, in my opinion, are a really pleasing combo.

LOVE LOVE LOVE! The intersection of I-94 and US 131, near Kalamazoo Michigan was planted many years ago with thousands of Daffodil bulbs. When they bloom in the spring it is beautiful.

For those of us who have critters issues, Prairie Moon has a section of their catalogue with septic safe natives (no deep roots). Never thought about the bulbs. What a great idea!!

I used a mix of bulbs from Colorblends called Alladin's Carpet. It blooms from very early spring to late spring. I added Allium Purple Sensation to continue the show into early summer.

I planted a bulb lawn this year in Florida with any zone 9-10 naturalizing bulb I could find, after watching Bunny Guinness episode w the Dutchess of Beaufort. Must watch! Wishing us both good luck on our bulb lawns!

OOOHHHHHH!!! SOOOOO GOOOOD!!!!! I gotta say, I am completely envious of your Spring bulb show to come!!! For SOME reason, I am addicted to bulbs! I think it's a combination of how they are SO EASY to take care of after planting, but even better, the Spring Show is sort of like a springtime surprise of wonderful color after a dull grey Winter. Every Spring - I want to "Walk Among The Daffodils". However, in my yard, the wild fauna has been working against all my efforts. Skunks, Squirrels, Armadillo, Opposums, just whatever is roaming around out there at night seem to make a beeline to my bulbs. I planted 600 Daffodil bulbs 3 years ago, & this next Spring, I'll be lucky to see 50 come back up. (Still - 50 is better than nothing!) Plus, there's the problem of a healthy population of jumping worms all thru my soil. I'm at the point where I'm seriously believing the combination of various fauna are working together to rid my yard of any & all bulbs! I think what happens is this - The jumping worms START the process of eating the bulbs, (yes, I've found those awful worms LIVING inside a half eaten bulb before! THEYRE SO GROSS!!) and then the skunks, racoons, or whatever night creature is passing by, smell the decaying bulb underground, and they dig them up to finish the job. I'm currently working to solve ALL these "fauna issues". So my next bulb planting days are still in the future. Until then, I will happily live vicariously thru you and your bulb mound!! I look forward to my eyes "walking among the Daffodils" with you this next Spring! What a happy day that will be!!!

@MyFocusVaries Oh yes! They DEFINITELY ARE!! They LOVE those stinky worms! I think raccoons like to eat them too. And I have mixed feelings about that too. On the one hand, I certainly DO NOT mind how they are helping me rid those nasty worms from my soils. On the other hand, the fact that they're eating them, just means they will be dropping the j.worm eggs in their feces, and spreading the j.worms that way. And then there's my yard being regularly tilled up by the night animals, and if I ever do plant something in the ground, they dig that up too. Right now, I'm only "gardening" in pots. Which is not really sustainable in very hot Central Texas, not to mention pots freezing over the Winter. But I can put up with it fir a short while... Any way you look at it, it's not a good cycle for any of us!

I love bulbs in lawn! I didn’t know there was a name/title for it. I remember when my mom bought her house, the following spring there were flowers in her lawn. I didn’t what they were or how they got there (they were daffodils). That was over 50 yrs ago. Recently, last few yrs, I started daffodils in my lawn. I’m glad you mentioned early bloomers and thin leaves. This is going to look beautiful!

Our home's previous owners planted daffodils in various spots in the yard, and they are still going strong after 27 years (maybe longer depending on who planted them). We have a lot of trees so grass doesn't grow particularly well so we usually don't mow until later anyway. In fact, most of our "lawn" is moss which I'm okay with. Your video has made me consider planting more!

I love moss makes it so spongy. I work in a garden center and tell people to embrace their moss. Better than bare exposed soil. Fairy's and gnomes prefer it.

Although I feel the bulb tone works wonders, I chose to quit using it in fall because I noticed the creatures who love to dig up such bulbs also LOVE the bulb tone. In order to not draw them in, I have reverted to letting nature do its thing. I can NOT wait to see your mound next spring. If I didnt have a "Mr Much More Impatient to mow" I would love to try this method.

Honestly this whole bulb lawn thing has made me rethink what this mound can be so you never know. Everything planted in a mound needs to be shallow rooted Ana our septic guys say it has to be evergreen (I wouldn’t say that turf grass fulfills that though.) I did change out an entire mound of a client/ friend’s with geranium macrorrhizum and it’s a very good look and actually is mostly evergreen.

Grape hyacinth are a thug here in zone 7b, plus their grassy foliage comes up in fall and is kind of messy. The windflower is aptly named. They blow themselves all around your yard, your neighbour's ... 😂

I should have told you, I've been in Central Florida for 4 years now. I planted Muhlenbergia, Pink Cloud on the truly ugly septic. Blooming like mad now, etheral! I am adding more over by the leach field this year. Can't wait for your's and mine ro blossom!

It's going to be fabulous! Question: Besides the drought, we are having unusually warm weather in zone 6b/7a NJ and no sign of rain nor frost in the 10 day. Should I wait to plant my spring flowering bulbs until the temps cool down? One more: with no killing frost my dahlias are still in the ground (but not flowering anymore)...should I just go ahead and dig them up, or should I be patient and wait. At this point, it seems like I will be gardening in December...lol!

I cant wait to see how your expanded planting will look next spring! I am envious of your space to create such a wonderful planting. I love Tommy crocus and gold cloth for early bulbs here. Snow drops next then late shpwy crocis varoeties and species tulips and mini species daffs. Those tiny flowers are so charming. In NW Oregon grape hyacinth are beasts in the garden. It doesn't help that moles enjoy pushing bulbs throughout the garden. I discoverd theor flowers are edible and made a syrup to add to lemonade from the blue ones. I have a bit of a love hate with relationship there. Living in Oregon Fritillaria is a huge favorite of mine. Its a favorite of the grandkids too.

I lasagna planted daffodils, tulips, crocus, and muscari in my backyard garden. It's fun. Last year I planted maybe 500 tulips in the front. Landscaping takes time and I don't know how you do it all (but then, you are younger than me). Your septic garden is going to be even more beautiful and I can't wait to see it! Happy Halloween! NOT that I have tried this: BUT I have seen people use a shovel and just shove the shovel into the ground pull your shovel forward, leaving a gap, then dump a whole bag of bulbs into that space, remove the shovel. They all claim they still get an amazing show and that the bulbs 'right' themselves??? Now in spring viewing their gardens they had MANY blooms??? Again NOT something I have tried. I planted almost 2000 last year and did it again this fall because I adored the 'show' this spring. Thank heavens for the auger. It is still a TON of work BUT oh my the beauty is just SO worth it. I also planted only bulbs that would be more likely to return and spread. Happy spring. .. 🎉

Two reasons why I skipped alliums: 1. The only one that I would deem small enough to work with this collection is A. Amplectens ‘Graceful’. 2. Alliums typically bloom later in spring. My goal with this collection was to have everything finished blooming by the end of May or so.

Sadly none. We did have a view from our bedroom upstairs which was lovely to wake up to but that’s now gone with the neighbor’s renovation. If I ever leave this house it will only be for a lake view.

Great video, Erin! Question, could you plant a variety of sedge on the bulb mound, or do the roots go too deep? The reason I ask is because they stay a lush green from early spring to late fall, even in drought. I’m in SE South Dakota and my Carex Sprengelii (sp?) stayed green despite not having rain for 6+ weeks this late summer & fall. Lawn grass is definitely more water hungry/fussy!

What if you have moles? I’ve heard they eat bulbs. Would love to do this but our moles are very active in winter (Pacific NW)…also bulbs are so expensive. The only bulk option is for standard large varieties (tulip/daffs) and I would want to do the smaller, more unique varieties. Looking forward to Spring and seeing your expanded bulb fantasia!

These botanical tulips should be very good (possibly too good) naturalizers, unlike the larger, showier Darwin type tulips. It will be interesting to see how last year’s tulips come back next spring.

can you confirm how much turf treatment (fertilizer, preemergent, post-emergent herbicide, fungicide, etc) you are using on your lawn with this technique? My real question is how much do I need to sacrifice a lush green turf all year long in order to try this?

It's a good question and I think it's definitely something to weigh if you value a great looking lawn. We pretty much only fertilize the lawn (not enough and typically with Milorganite), so we do struggle with some weeds. Our approach is more "is it green?" than "Is it a beautiful lawn?" I'm not sure how other treatments would affect bulbs, but I'm thinking the pre and post-emergent herbicides could be problematic since part of the way bulb lawns develop is by natural reseeding. This is all a long answer to say that it's probably likely that you'd have to make a sacrifice in the quality of lawn in order to have a good in-lawn bulb display for the long term.

it is very important to do repellent even if they are critter resistant because squirrels will dig them up and go..YUK, and leave out and do it over and over..small brains!!!!
