I had a little trouble making that highlights easier to do when I started my Dark Angels. Thanks for the tutorial, using that drybrush and shade made more sense and I just personally liked how it turned out.

This is a great improvement over what I've been doing, applying the drybrush directly onto the armour so my marines ended up looking more like the salamanders. Amazing work man!

1. I tested this method today for my Crimson Fists. I did everything the same just change the colors. Kantor Blue->Nuln Oil->Kantor Blue again->Hoeth Blue (Drybrush)->Drakenhof Nightshade) Just amazing how fast you can get the Power Armor painted. 2. I watched the fist video of you 2 weeks ago (Black Armor) and I have to say what you do on KZbin ist the most epic thing for me who started with the hobby on Christmas last year after 10 years break. I'm really glad to hear you took the technique and adapted it to what you needed. Those few stages work really well for almost any dark colour scheme, and Crimson Fists are a really cool Chapter. The Dark Angels turned out to be an interesting challenge with my usual technique. It always comes down to being a little 'too' generous with the drybrush and trusting that final wash to fix things, which even I have trouble with sometimes!

Really nice armor color scheme, personally I prefer to drybrush the edges with warpstone glow, but I can see how niblet green really makes the edges pop. Overall, a very nice figure indeed!

Brilliant channel. Thanks to the video you did on black armor I was finally able to start painting my Black Templar primaris again after not having any motivation due to the armor taking so long to paint. I was able to paint 5 of them over the last 2 days with the drybrush method as the basis followed by some extra edge highlights on certain parts. Massive thank you for that :D

That's the ticket! Bash out the basics, then pick something you want to look that little bit tidier and do some spot highlights to really make it crisp and clean. I'm glad to hear it's helped out; there aren't enough Black Templars on the table these days!

As it happens, Dark Angels are one of those Chapters I've long wanted to revisit. Some of these older videos aren't really up to scratch any more; Dark Angels and Imperial Fists in particular stand out. Keep an eye out!

Obviously dry brushing is much faster, but all my Dark Angels marines are painted with edge highlights. I used Moot Green and Warpstone Glow to highlight the Caliban. I think when you dry brush marines it gives them kind of a blotchy, smeared look, where edge highlights give a cleaner smoother transition. I opt to save the dry brushing for vehicles. Definitely if you're just looking to get models on the table, then dry brushing is the way to go. Your dry brush job is about as good a job as I've seen though, nice work. Really enjoy your videos.

I love the way you did the green, but I've always hated Red bolters for Dark Angels. Looks like christmas colors. If i ever do a DA army they will have black or just silver/steel bolters.

Great video! I accidentally used nuln oil gloss instead of regular nuln oil on one of my dark Angels. Would some brush on matte varnish make it look nearly as good or should I cover him up with green and buy regular nuln oil? I appreciate your responses

You should be able to put some matte varnish on and it'll look just fine. I've made the same mistake once or twice with my Stormcast and after a varnish and the rest of the details done you'll never spot the difference. :D

I'm not likely to cycle back around to the Ultramarines for a little while, as it stands - I've got a lot more power armour to cover! Luckily, there's one here that might do the job. I can hear how it'd sound like that! It's Rhinox Hide I chose. It's got a slightly darker finish than something like Dryad Bark, but I think it suits that dark, red leather appearance.

Craft paints will work for some applications - I keep a bunch of them for painting bases and really large scenery pieces - but they're not really a match for dedicated miniature paints.

One thing I'm really finding hard is painting the gun. I just can't do it without painting the figure as well as the gun. Same thing happens with the Imperian logo, I just can't paint it without painting the gun. If you (or anyone else) have made a tutorial could you link it too me, if not, could you make a tutorial. There isn't much I can think of specific to missing the weapon if you're trying to paint something on the chest. The simplest thing I can think of that might help is to really change the angle you're holding the miniature at. Lay it almost flat in your hand rather than straight upright and paint from 'above' the chest, so you can try and get the most of that open space. In the next Marine video I'll try and demonstrate what I mean a little more clearly.

Ok i've now watched. Are you taking paint direct from the pot on some of those colours? Ws thinking the brown, red and silver? Also, do you find it quicker to shade with nuln oil by direct shading in the recesses rather than washing the entire model, then having to overbrush once again to bring the base colour back up?

Good question! It'd actually not occurred to me to explain the difference in why I do the wash over the whole miniature like that. First and foremost, it's way easier to do; just blasting a model in a shade and then overbrushing is a simple technique to pick up. I also find that once drying time's taken out of the equation, it's a fair bit quicker. When you're batch painting five or ten miniatures, it's a whole lot quicker! The end result isn't too much different, either. I'd recess shade the characters in an army the 'accurate' way, but for basic infantry I tend to find it's much simpler to just whip out the drybrush. The red and silver I mixed a little bit of water in with, but with the Rhinox Hide that came straight from the pot with just a little bit of water in the brush when I picked it out. I keep a bit of water in my pots to thin them out after having used the paints a couple of times, but well spotted. :D I'll fix that link, too!

Camoflage isn't really the point, It's rule of cool really, and gives the model a bright contrast. You've got other chapters running around in all sorts of bright colors.
