Beautiful! Going to be really helpful to paint my 2500 point army! Seen alot of guides that I didn't fancy and where to complicated, this will be a very good scheme and looks pretty easy to do as this is my break army from my endless Tyranid swarms with mountains of production line like painting left too do! Take care mate

Something I really appreciate about your tutorial is you didn't change the colour. You didn't make a dark blue marine with Iron Hands iconography. You didn't highlight with blue to make it, again, look like a blue marine with Iron Hands iconography. You made a marine, done up in black, with some weathering. You made an Iron Hands marine. Thank you.

Truthfully, I liked it better pre-varnish, when it really leant the impression that this was a suit that wasn't used for parading, it was used for fighting a war and maintained by people who largely only cared about making sure it worked. Really did a lot to separate it from your deathwatch or black templars. Still, really informative video, thanks for putting it out!

Brass on the bolter would break up a bit of the monotony (or more accurately, monochrome) but as far as "getting it done, model on the table", then yes, works nicely. I've had pretty bad luck with varnishes (don't use 'em any more) but that one really makes the armor pop.

Really loving these. I was looking to paint PH Iron Hands, but I don't like the bright version that GW is doing now. What do you suppose the combo of combing this and the black steel stormcasts? Basing the armor in Black/Leadbelcher, drybrush necon, wash with nuln oil? How well would it work on tanks, dreads, etc... Not sure on Contrast, since they're difficult on tanks.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
Should work pretty well, honestly. Especially the black/Leadbelcher mix over bigger areas, that should look nice and dark but still have a bit of visual interest at table distance.

@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't have any problems with applying a transfer to this. If you're worried, a little splash of varnish on the shoulder pad first will be enough to seal it, then you can hit the whole miniature with a matt sealer.

@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
You can apply the transfers theoretically at any stage, but if you do it before the varnish then they're protected from handling wear and tear like the paint job. It's generally best if your varnish is the final step.

Somewhat late to the party but to answer the 'medusan immortal' painting method, 'the wargamer' channel has a good technique that does not require an airbrush in his horus heresy series. For a more modern answer to this question, a silver basecoat with a games workshop black Contrast series of paint over top should give something interesting with minimal effort. That being said i quite like your method, seems easy to batch paint, feels like i am making good headway in short amounts of time and Looks really good

@SonicSledgehammerStudio6 жыл бұрын
When it comes to where you ought to start, I'd always suggest to pick up the miniatures that look most appealing to you. Space Marines are very carefully designed to give easy results to a beginner but have a large area for an experienced painter to go nuts and explore other techniques, but that doesn't mean you're restricted to beginning there. I figure that if you start with what you like the look of most you're going to enjoy the end results more! While some might be a little trickier to paint at first it's usually not by much, honestly, and far better to go with something you find interesting.

The little servo arm is actually from one of the Servitors! :) I clipped one of the little bobble exhausts off his power pack and it fits really well there, so a smaller arm did fine for that. With most Space Marine Chapters you're able to use any 'generic' kit - things like the Space Marine Tactical Squads, Terminators and the like are all valid for the Iron Hands, and you just paint them up to match the army you're playing. The Iron Hands upgrade kit is neat, but it can get expensive if you want those bits for every Marine in your army! Just stick to the ordinary plastic boxes and you'll be fine.

my munitorum varnish finish came out very frosted in some areas, even making the armour look a bit grey. What did i do wrong?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio5 жыл бұрын
It could be either that you need to shake the can a little more, or you're spraying it while the can or the conditions outside are a little too cool or humid for it. If you're getting a frosty effect, just hit it with a gloss varnish with a brush, then let that dry overnight and try spray varnishing again in better conditions. Or try a brush-on matt varnish. :)

Easiest chapter in 40K to paint. Spray with Chaos Black, done. P.S. Please don't be offended when I ask this, but is that your actual voice, or are you putting it on a bit? It isn't half a deep voice that you have. If I remember right, Iron Hands original colour scheme used to be a kind of dirty, bolt gun metal, silvery colour all over.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
Don't know what to tell you, bud! That's just how I sound. 😅 I used to run a Chaos Black Iron Hands army back in the day when I wanted Marines on the table quickly, funnily enough.
@cadderley1004 жыл бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Same here. Easiest chapter in the entire 40K universe to paint. Chaos Black undercoat, bit of silver on the chest eagle, bit of edge highlighting, done. They were great because the undercoat also acted as the base coat. It's not often when you get an army where you can do 2 phases of painting in 1 go. That was back in the dark days of Warhammer though, when all we had was Chaos Black and Skull White spray to work with. I'll never know why it took Gamesworkshop 30 years to add red, yellow and other colours to spray paint undercoats. Truth be told, I don't know how much longer GW has left to run, now that 3D printing's a thing these days. Give it another 30 years, and there might not even be a GW anymore, once 3D printing becomes more refined.

Most of this is straight over the black primer, which could be just about anything. For reference I'd still suggest giving it a quick once-over with some Abaddon Black from the pot once you're done just to make sure the primer is smooth and has a nice, even finish to paint with.
