I actually think those extra smudges on the mini look great! Gives it kind of a gritty, battleworn armor look. Thanks for the tutorial.

I find that with that little bit of extra time spent on tidying those rough edges, people don't think twice about how you've done the highlights. It's not quite hiding the fact you've drybrushed them, but nobody comments on it.

Been really keen to start a deathwatch army but edge highlighting had me a bit freaked out. Excited to give this a try. My Chaos knights were really barebones with Layer paints and a primer and my GSC were contrast paint heavy so it'll be fun to try another approach for another army.

I've a huge Sisters of battle army in Epic 40k scale to paint, and I've never been able to pull of black armour at small scale as it just looks grey, but this might be a good way to trick the eye into it looking black at small scale too. I will have to give it a go.

This is wonderful. I have very shaky hands and has been hesitant to get into the hobby for a long time as I know I'm not near steady enough to edgehighlight. I started painting recently though and went with black armour with drybrushing for my highlights but as a complete noob I haven't had as great results as you had here but now I have some solid guidance I feel like I'm not stuck with solid blobs of black as my marines.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
I've found increasingly that my hands aren't as steady as they used to be, either. Luckily, those little cleanup steps don't ask much, so you can fake out some of the most prominent highlights. :D

How this technique could work on Blood Angels. Well, I know that you've already made a video, but I'm still curious. Instead of these two highlight colours (Longbeard Grey and Fenrisian Grey) what colours could work on red BA armor?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
Blood Angels these days I'd paint more or less the same as how I did the Order of the Bloody Rose. Kindleflame is apparently being retired, though, so I'd pick a couple of pots of that up before they get rid of something really useful!

@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
I sincerely doubt they'll go as far as painting videos and the like, but if that's what they decide it's a simple matter to remove what I've done featuring their work over the years, and they can put their own advertising up behind Warhammer+ if they fancy.

Grey tutorial as always. I'm a big fan of your guides. Would you use this exact method on dreadnoughts and vehicles to go with the foot troops?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
You might need to adapt a little on how the wash would work on larger surfaces - maybe targeted recess shading rather than applying over the whole thing - but for the most part, yeah. Marines are just little tanks, themselves!

@MrCBennett1003 жыл бұрын
Hey Sledge, any particular reason you drybrushed this grey and washed blue, opposed to drybrushing blue and washing black like you did with the sister? Or just experimenting? If so, do you have a favourite?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio3 жыл бұрын
Grey and washed blue will give you a slightly more blue-tinted finish, where the drybrush blue and wash black tends to a sharper, colder grey finish. It depends a little on what the rest of the miniature is doing. With the Sister there's a lot of red and white to carry visual interest, so 'normal' black armour works just fine, whereas the Deathwatch only have a small splash of colour in their bolters, so setting that red off against a colder blue-black finish will look a little better. At least in my opinion!

Hi. Hope you are okay? I have painted Trish from the Devil May Cry bloody Palace board game, and used your drybrush technique on her black leather trousers and front lace up crop top. A fantastic way to get the best details popping on a miniature. You might want to check out Devil may cry as there are some amazing figures to paint in a variety of different sized models. Really pushes the skill levels. Think you would do them justice though. Take care. Thanks again for hints and keeping people's spirits up.
