It's really nice to see a Roman miniature painted. It looks great and I am glad you used the Army Painter colors for this as I had wondered if they could be used for historical figures. Thanks for sharing this.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, John! The Army Painter stuff works pretty well on just about anything. I've found it's similar to GW's products in that sense that once you know what the crazy names are for everything, you know what colour you're looking for. Paint is paint past a point, but the vibrancy of the AP colours helps a lot with the 'dip and highlight' method they encourage.

There's a few systems out there for playing smaller games with historical figures - SPQR is the starter box I got this chap out of, but there's also Infamy, Infamy coming soon from TooFatLardies, or even the likes of Fistful of Lead from Wiley Games. I'd even look at playing something like Rangers of Shadow Deep but with a Mediterranean flavor in the miniatures! :D Might be easier to drag others in that way, and RoSD at least has solo adventure rules as well. :)
@TheSMC19884 жыл бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio that all sounds great! I have been following SPQR from Warlord it looks more skirmish based than Hail Caesar is a larger scale battle. Saga is another that I found fun. I'm a huge History nerd so I could do any era and be very happy lol. It's near impossible to find people to do AoS with let alone an Antiques or Napoleonic game. Bolt Action is gaining traction here though. Americans are slowly learning to appreciate history 😂

Hello I really need you're help, I am painting a british peninsula war unit just finished first four and the do not look right. The white pants look off and whenever I paint the straps they also just don't look right I looked at Perry's photos and the white just looks subtle and clean i have no idea what I'm doing wrong i start with off white then paint pure white and it turns out just strange and I don't know how to add a wash without ruining the white. love you're video
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
White is a tricky one to paint. There aren't many shortcuts to a crisp, pure white. Thin the paint out with a little water before applying it and you'll need to apply three or four coats in some cases. Make sure you let each layer dry properly before you go over it again, otherwise you'll just lift off the layer beneath and it'll become a big cludgy mess.

Nice video, I have one question, do you cut the botton basing in which this units come? I see is there so I am wondering if you are adding enough basing so it is not visible, thanks !
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
Nope, there's really no need to go cutting off the puddle base if you don't want to. Once you've based the rest of the miniature it pretty much disappears. If you do want to cut it off, make sure you're doing it before the painting, though.

Hey there must have watched most of your video's by now, really enjoy your style and as soon as I've finished with all my buildings will be trying them out. I have a ton of GW Space Wolves, Dark Eldar and Skatari (Adapatus Mechanicus or some or other spelling). Could you perhaps do a video of these guys with Contrast paints, I really need a quick and easy method for doing these guys with so many to paint. Currently like most hobbiests I have thousands of figures to paint... I have 8 different Bolt Action armies, Some Dr Who Daleks, Cybermen etc, a Beyond The Gates of Antares army and more beside. Having seen your videos I am also now tempted by some Star Wars figures! Anyway keep the good work up, Regards, Simon of Gloucester!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
There's honestly a couple of troop types I wouldn't know quite how to tackle with Contrast, and Skitarii have to be near the top of that list! I've seen people doing some interesting things with Contrast and metallic paints though, so it'll be worth having an experiment and seeing what I can come up with. Personally, I don't seem to find them overall that much quicker than ordinary paint, but the effect they give is really something - I do like the high saturation colour those paints have!
@SiDayUT14 жыл бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I would be interested to see the result of your experimentation, like I said I have bucket loads of figures to get to grips with. I am eager to try out your contrast method on my German and UK Infantry, but just got to get through all of my buildings first as I had stock piled a lot of stuff for 40K and some for Bolt Action. Also want to try it out on the Frost Grave figures I've got. As a quick thought, what colours would you think could work for the Space Wolves? Regards, Simon.
@danielb40684 жыл бұрын
Great Video! As a beginner your videos really help me to get nice results! But I have a question: How do you think about the Army Painter Warpaints after some time now? I have bought some on my own and while some cover really nice (the greens and blues) some cover almost not at all. I especially have problems with "Phoenix Flames" which I use up to ten layers and it just won't cover. I tried everything from shaking with an agitator over stirring with a stick and shaking it for up to 15 minutes. Did you make similar experiences?

Do army paiters colors work well on metal miniatures?

Also how do you have such a crisp point on all of you're brushes? I've been painting historicals for a year and a half and i don't know why but my figures feel messy even if I have not overspilled I think washes might be a problem
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
I only rinse them regularly in water. If I'm painting in batches of ten miniatures, I'll still rinse my brush between every third or fourth figure even if I'm still painting the same colour on more of them - paint will dry in the bristles and slowly force them apart over time, which will ruin the tips.
@paintinghistory14754 жыл бұрын
Thanks I'll try it out, also i think I found a great miniature brush called the Raphael 8404 keeps its tip

That gun metal spray looks a bit blotchy and not very smooth. Is that the mini or the spray? GW spray cans are hard to beat despite the price!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio4 жыл бұрын
It's actually just the camera, I think! In reality it's a much smoother finish. Still slightly darker than Leadbelcher spray - it doesn't seem to be quite as shiny overall compared to the GW primers - but takes paint just as well.

All nice videos, but there's always a but. I wish the demonstrators would describe the paint properly. Not the silly fantasy names they use. Scarlet not evil Sun, for instance.

If the silly fantasy name is what's on the pot, it's worth making note of it so that someone can find the same colour that's being demonstrated. Or at least to colour match using a comparison tool.
